McCormack Campground Introduce
For many Oregonians, a camping trip is an essential part of the summer experience, and finding the right spot can make all the difference. While the lush forests of the Cascades and the stunning coastline get a lot of attention, the high desert of Eastern Oregon offers a unique and equally beautiful landscape that is well worth the drive. McCormack Campground, located on the picturesque shores of Lake Owyhee, is a popular destination that caters to a specific kind of outdoor enthusiast. It’s a place where the vibrant colors of the high desert canyons meet the tranquil waters of a sprawling reservoir, creating a truly memorable scene.
However, it is important for locals to understand the character of this campground to ensure their expectations align with the reality. As a popular spot, especially during the peak summer season, it is a hub of activity. McCormack Campground is situated in a stunning location, with gorgeous canyons and a beautiful lake, but it is also a lively place, particularly for those with motorized boats. As one reviewer noted, the sounds of "boat motors, huge music speakers and truck engines" can be pervasive, making it more of a recreational hub than a peaceful, quiet escape. For those looking for a serene getaway, a weekday visit or a trip during the off-season might be a better fit. But if you’re looking to get out on the water, this is a prime location.
This article will provide a clear and factual overview of McCormack Campground to help Oregonians decide if it is the right destination for their next outdoor adventure. We will cover its location, the services it offers, and its key features, while also providing a realistic picture of the atmosphere. By doing so, we aim to provide a helpful resource that ensures campers are prepared for their visit and can fully enjoy all that this unique corner of our state has to offer. The mix of stunning desert scenery and an active lake environment makes McCormack Campground a distinctly Oregon experience, reflecting the diverse outdoor opportunities available throughout our state.
The surrounding area is a geological marvel. Lake Owyhee fills a narrow, deep canyon, and the drive to the campground itself is a scenic journey. Visitors can expect to see dramatic volcanic rock formations and rugged mountains, a testament to the powerful forces that shaped this region. The lake is a 53-mile-long reservoir that offers plenty of space for water activities, from leisurely kayaking to exhilarating water skiing. The "sketchy" beach access mentioned in a review might be due to low water levels, which can be a factor in the high desert, but the on-site boat ramp makes launching a motorized craft easy and convenient. This contrast of a rugged, natural landscape with the energy of human recreation is a defining characteristic of McCormack Campground, offering a different kind of outdoor experience than one might find in other parts of Oregon.
It is also a family-friendly destination, with features that make it suitable for kids. While the noise level can be high on weekends, the presence of a lake, ample space for activities, and the option for RV and tent camping make it a practical and enjoyable choice for families. The availability of amenities like restrooms and showers provides a level of comfort that makes it easy to stay for a weekend or longer.
McCormack Campground is located within Lake Owyhee State Park at 1298 Owyhee Lake Rd, Nyssa, OR 97910, USA. This places it in the high desert region of eastern Oregon, a significant drive from the more populated western part of the state. The park is a remote oasis, and the journey to get there is part of the experience. The road is well-maintained but can be narrow and winding in places, requiring a cautious approach. Despite its remoteness, the campground is designed to be accessible. It features a wheelchair accessible entrance and a wheelchair accessible parking lot, ensuring that more people can enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
The campground itself is part of the Lake Owyhee State Park system. This is an important distinction, as it is managed by Oregon State Parks. While one reviewer mentioned a lack of state park rangers, it is worth noting that park staff and camp hosts are on site during peak season to manage the area and assist visitors. The campground is also well-equipped to handle different types of campers, from those in RVs to those with tents, making it a versatile option for various camping styles. Its location right by the lake, with a boat ramp, makes it a central hub for all water-related activities in the area.

McCormack Campground Reviews
I spent a Saturday evening camping at McCormack Campground. I was hoping for a peaceful camping trip spent along Lake Owyhee reservoir admiring the gorgeous canyon at sunset. While I was still able to appreciate the beauty around me, it became evident that the campground is primarily a campground for people with motorized boats. The screams of boat motors, huge music speakers and truck engines were pervasive. If you’re looking for a place to go boating, this is it! If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway in the canyon, this is not it. Or at least don’t go on a summer weekend. Quiet hour was not enforced and there was even a patron that had a campfire even though there was a burn ban in the area. Zero state park rangers present. Not sure if the campground is considered separate from the Lake Owyhee State Park?
