Location and Accessibility
Matchwood Campground is located in Ewen, MI 49925, USA, nestled within Michigan's sprawling Upper Peninsula. This address places it in a region renowned for its dense forests, abundant wildlife, and opportunities for true wilderness immersion. Ewen itself is a small, quiet community, characteristic of the U.P.'s more remote areas, providing a sense of peaceful isolation that many campers actively seek. A key characteristic of Matchwood Campground, as noted in public feedback, is its unique positioning: it is a "small area" "surrounded by private land." While this might seem "weird" to some, for experienced primitive campers, it signifies a dedicated state-managed pocket of public land accessible for camping in an otherwise privately owned landscape. This specific geographical context means that while the campground offers a free camping experience, users should be mindful of its boundaries and respect surrounding private properties. Access to the site typically involves navigating rural roads in the Ewen area. As a primitive campground, specific site access might be unpaved or less developed. Campers should be prepared for varying road conditions depending on weather. Despite its somewhat unusual landlocked nature, its existence provides a valuable and otherwise unavailable access point for enjoying the natural environment in this part of the U.P. For those planning to explore the vast state and national forests that characterize the region, Matchwood Campground serves as a simple yet effective launching point, allowing Michiganders to experience the raw beauty of their state.

Matchwood Campground Reviews
This site is a free oasis in a sea of paid sites. The problem is that it's surrounded by private land and is a small area. Seems strange it's reserved for camping.Other than the weird location, it's primitive camping so expect to bring everything yourself. Left early, only because someone had the whole site and decided to take the one right next to me. If that didn't happen, I probably would've stayed longer.
