Pretty beautiful spot with spacious campsites. We were at site 20 which I highly recommend because it is far away from other campers but you do sacrifice the sunset view which you can get from the campsites on the other side. Also the campground has access to multiple trails as well. All in all a good place to camp especially if you go on a weekday. - Titus

Marion Mountain Campground Introduce

For Californians seeking an authentic mountain escape with breathtaking vistas and unparalleled hiking opportunities, Marion Mountain Campground in the San Bernardino National Forest stands out as a premier destination. Tucked away in a heavily forested alpine setting, this campground offers a serene retreat from the bustling city life, providing a direct gateway to some of Southern California's most spectacular wilderness. Whether you're an avid peak-bagger eyeing the challenging ascent to San Jacinto Peak or simply looking for a tranquil spot to connect with nature amidst towering pines and cedars, Marion Mountain Campground promises a rewarding experience right here in our Golden State.

Marion Mountain Campground is renowned among local hikers as the starting point for the Marion Mountain Trail, often considered the shortest, albeit most strenuous, route to San Jacinto Peak. This makes it an ideal basecamp for those undertaking the "SoCal Six Pack of Peaks Challenge" or anyone seeking a rigorous yet incredibly rewarding mountain adventure. Beyond the challenging hikes, the campground itself boasts a peaceful atmosphere with "spacious campsites" that offer a sense of privacy. Imagine waking up surrounded by the fresh mountain air, the scent of pine, and the quiet sounds of the forest – a stark contrast to urban living. It's a place where you can truly unwind, marvel at the unexpected "lots of greenery you wouldn't expect to see in summer in Southern California," and experience the majestic beauty of the San Jacinto Mountains up close.

Marion Mountain Campground is strategically located at 52745 Forest Rte 4S02, Idyllwild-Pine Cove, CA 92549, USA, within the San Bernardino National Forest. This location places it approximately 50 miles southeast of San Bernardino and just seven miles north of the charming mountain town of Idyllwild. Access to the campground is typically via Highway 243. From Interstate 10 in Banning, you can take Highway 243 south for about 20 miles to Alandale. From there, you'll travel east on Stone Creek Campground Road (also known as Azalea Trails Road) for about 1.5 to 2 miles to reach Marion Mountain Campground.

The roads leading to the campground are generally well-maintained, with paved sections even on winding mountain roads, making it accessible for most vehicles, including those towing small RVs or trailers (up to 20 feet). The campground itself is at an elevation of approximately 6,400 feet. While paved roads lead directly to your site, it's always wise to check current road conditions, especially during the late fall, winter, and early spring months, as snow and ice can lead to temporary closures. Despite its mountain setting, the drive is scenic and manageable for Californians coming from various parts of the state. It's close enough to major population centers to be a convenient weekend getaway, yet far enough into the mountains to provide a genuine sense of escape and wilderness immersion. This balance of accessibility and a truly wild feel makes Marion Mountain a prized destination for locals.

  • Direct Trail Access: A major service is the direct access to multiple hiking trails, most notably the Marion Mountain Trail, which leads to San Jacinto Peak. This eliminates the need to drive to a separate trailhead.
  • Camp Host (Seasonal): A camp host is often on duty during the open season, providing assistance and sometimes selling firewood.
  • Trash Collection: Designated trash collection points (dumpsters) are available within the campground for proper waste disposal.

Specific sites, like Site 20, are highly recommended for their isolation, providing a feeling of "far away from other campers." This level of solitude is a rare find in many popular campgrounds.
