Great spot on top of the mountain. Drove up the trail with 4x4 suv, easy trail. Open space with first come first serve spots. No bathrooms, no trash, be prepared to bring it with you. There’s a bathroom at the Caballo campground down the trail (you’ll pass by driving up the trail). Dog loved it. Only thing, lots of wasps around our area. Went late July, was quite hot in the day, cool at night. Beautiful scenery, perfect spot to watch sunrise. Would go again! - Jérôme Piché

From the moment you ascend to its elevated position, you'll be greeted by an open space, crisp mountain air, and the promise of serene moments. We strongly advocate for Leave No Trace principles, encouraging all campers to pack out everything they pack in, leaving no trace of their visit. Marian Campground is exceptionally well-located for those seeking a secluded mountain retreat within California, offering stunning views from its elevated position. You'll find it at Forest Rte 9N27, Maricopa, CA 93252, USA. This address places the campground within the expansive Los Padres National Forest, signifying a truly immersive natural setting. Accessing Marian Campground requires a bit of an adventure, as the trail leading up to it is best navigated with a 4x4 SUV or similar high-clearance vehicle. While it's described as an "easy trail" for such vehicles, this clearly indicates it's not suitable for all standard passenger cars or large RVs. This requirement naturally filters the number of visitors, contributing to its quiet and uncrowded atmosphere.

The journey to Marian Campground is part of its unique appeal, transitioning from more developed areas to increasingly rugged terrain as you ascend the mountain. This sense of remoteness is a key draw for those seeking solitude. It's important to note that while Marian itself is primitive, a bathroom is available at Caballo Campground further down the trail, which you will pass on the drive up. This allows for a necessary convenience on the route to your ultimate destination. The campground's elevation also contributes to distinct weather patterns, with hot days but refreshingly cool nights, even in late July, providing a welcome escape from the heat of lower elevations. Its location within the national forest also means it serves as an excellent base for experiencing the broader mountain environment, known for its diverse ecosystems and breathtaking vistas. Due to its remote nature, public transportation is not an option; private vehicle (preferably 4x4) is essential for access.

Marian Campground offers a truly minimalist approach to services, emphasizing a primitive, off-grid camping experience. This means campers must be fully self-sufficient and prepared to bring everything they need.

  • First-Come, First-Serve Spots: The campground operates on a first-come, first-serve basis, meaning there are no reservations. Availability depends on arrival time, particularly during peak seasons.
  • Open Space & Dispersed Camping Feel: While there are designated "spots," the overall feel is of an open space, offering a more dispersed camping experience. Individual sites typically include basic commodities like picnic tables.
  • No Bathrooms On-Site: Marian Campground does NOT have its own bathroom facilities. Campers must be prepared for primitive human waste disposal or utilize the bathroom available at Caballo Campground, which is located down the trail and passed on the way up.
  • No Trash Receptacles: There are absolutely no trash bins or waste disposal services at Marian Campground. Campers are required to practice strict "pack it in, pack it out" principles, meaning all trash, food scraps, and waste must be carried out of the campground.
  • No Potable Water: There is no source of potable water at Marian Campground. Visitors must bring all their own drinking, cooking, and washing water for the entire duration of their stay.
  • No Hookups or Amenities: As a primitive campground, there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups for RVs, nor are there any other modern amenities like showers, camp hosts on-site, or general stores.
  • Picnic Tables: While very basic, picnic tables are generally available at the individual spots, providing a convenient surface for food preparation and dining.

Marian Campground is defined by its unique features and highlights, catering specifically to those who seek an authentic and rugged outdoor adventure with unparalleled natural beauty.

  • Stunning Mountain-Top Views: The absolute highlight is its location on top of the mountain, providing truly amazing panoramic views. This includes perfect spots for watching the sunrise, offering a memorable start to your day.
  • 4x4 Accessible Trail: The accessibility via an "easy trail" for 4x4 SUVs makes it an adventurous journey and helps maintain its secluded nature by limiting access to standard vehicles.
  • Uncrowded & Quiet: A significant advantage is the minimal number of visitors, ensuring a peaceful and quiet environment. Reviews often mention nobody else being at the site, offering ultimate solitude.
  • Dog-Friendly Environment: The open space and natural setting are excellent for dogs, allowing them to enjoy the wilderness alongside their owners.
  • Cool Nights in Summer: Even during late July, while days can be hot, the mountain elevation ensures cool and comfortable nights, providing a welcome respite from the California heat.
  • Beautiful Scenery: Beyond the panoramic views, the surrounding natural scenery is consistently praised for its beauty, creating a picturesque backdrop for camping and relaxation.
  • Off-Grid Experience: For those seeking a complete break from modern conveniences, Marian Campground provides a true off-grid experience, encouraging self-reliance and a deeper connection with nature.
  • Open Space Feel: The lack of tightly defined sites and the overall open space contribute to a feeling of freedom and less structured camping, appealing to those who prefer a more wild experience.
