Low Gap Campground

190 Low Gap Rd, Helen, GA 30552, USA

4.0
We loved this campground and definitely will be returning! We were there the first weekend of Oktoberfest, and the weather was perfect. Not all of the campsites had people at it, which was a pleasant surprise being that it’s Helen’s busiest weekend of the year. I don’t recall any camper trailers, just tents, which I enjoyed, as trailers tend to bring with them extra noise and harsh lights. It was along low gap creek, which was really nice to listen to at night. The sites were a bit spaced out from each other (~50 ft from each other) but we were still near others, so keep in mind you are not secluded. The bathrooms are toilet only, no flushing, and we couldn’t figure out how to use the water, though others seemed to figure it out. Dog friendly. You do have a fairly large area to put up a tent, rather than a tiny space like some other campgrounds.*With Google Maps, the location was really hard to find. We drove an extra 40 minutes through the forest because maps told us to turn right at the “Low Gap Campground” sign, but you are supposed to turn LEFT. - Abigail Ballard

Low Gap Campground Introduce

For Georgians seeking an authentic, peaceful camping experience deeply embedded in the natural beauty of our state, Low Gap Campground near Helen offers a unique opportunity. Tucked away in the Chattahoochee National Forest, this campground provides a more rustic and quiet alternative to bustling, amenity-heavy sites. It’s a destination perfect for tent campers and those with smaller pop-ups or trailers, who appreciate the sounds of nature over the hum of generators and bright lights.

Low Gap Campground is described as being "along Low Gap Creek, which was really nice to listen to at night." This natural feature, combined with "plenty of shady spots" and generously "spaced out" sites, creates an inviting atmosphere for relaxation and rejuvenation. If your ideal getaway involves quiet nights under the stars, the calming sound of a flowing creek, and easy access to hiking and fishing, then Low Gap Campground should certainly be on your list for your next North Georgia adventure.

Location and Accessibility

Low Gap Campground is located at 190 Low Gap Rd, Helen, GA 30552, USA. This places it within the Chattahoochee National Forest, specifically in the Chattahoochee Wildlife Management Area, near the popular alpine-themed town of Helen. Its setting offers the best of both worlds: a secluded forest experience while still being just a few miles from the unique shops, restaurants, and activities of Helen.

While the campground's remote feel is a significant draw, it's important for visitors to be aware of navigation challenges. One review noted, "With Google Maps, the location was really hard to find. We drove an extra 40 minutes through the forest because maps told us to turn right at the “Low Gap Campground” sign, but you are supposed to turn LEFT." This highlights the importance of paying close attention to signage and potentially using a physical map or confirmed directions in addition to GPS, especially since cell service can be spotty in remote forest areas.

The campground is accessible by vehicle, but its focus on tent camping and smaller RVs suggests that large rigs might find maneuvering challenging, and there are no power or water hookups at the individual sites. This contributes to its serene, less commercialized ambiance.

Services Offered

Low Gap Campground provides essential, yet rustic, services, aligning with its mission to offer a traditional camping experience within a natural forest setting:

  • Campsites: There are 15 distinct campsites available. These sites are designed for tents, small campers, and pop-ups, offering "a fairly large area to put up a tent, rather than a tiny space like some other campgrounds." Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post, essential amenities for outdoor living.
  • Water Access: Potable water is available from a fresh well located at the back of the campground. This well features a seasonal hand pump, requiring campers to manually draw water. Campers should be prepared for this type of water access and consider bringing additional water if needed.
  • Vault Toilets: The campground provides "toilet only, no flushing" facilities, which are chemical vault toilets located across a bridge at the back section of the campground. Campers should be comfortable with this type of rustic restroom.
  • No Power or Water Hookups at Sites: It's crucial to note that individual campsites do not have electric or water hookups. This means campers must be prepared for off-grid living, relying on batteries, solar, or generators (used quietly during permitted hours).
  • Fire Rings: All sites are equipped with fire rings, allowing campers to enjoy campfires responsibly.
  • Trash Bins: There are three designated areas within the campground for trash disposal, encouraging campers to keep the area clean.
  • Bear Food Storage Lockers: Some sites may have bear food storage lockers, which should be used to protect food and scented items from wildlife, and kept clean for subsequent campers.
Features / Highlights
  • Creek-Side Camping: The presence of Low Gap Creek flowing through the campground is a significant highlight. The soothing sound of the creek provides a calming backdrop for your stay, and the creek itself is stocked with trout weekly from April to July by the Georgia DNR, offering excellent fishing opportunities.
  • Peaceful & Secluded Atmosphere: Despite its proximity to Helen, the campground maintains a quiet and uncrowded feel, even during busy times like Oktoberfest. The spaced-out sites contribute to a sense of privacy and tranquility, appealing to those who prefer a less bustling camping environment.
  • Dog-Friendly: Low Gap Campground welcomes dogs, making it a great option for pet owners who want to bring their furry companions on their outdoor adventures (leash rules apply).
  • Tent-Focused Environment: The prevalence of tents over large trailers and the absence of full hookups tend to attract campers seeking a more traditional and quieter experience, minimizing noise and light pollution often associated with larger RVs.
  • Proximity to Outdoor Recreation: Located within the Chattahoochee National Forest, the campground offers abundant opportunities for hiking, including access to nearby sections of the National Scenic Appalachian Trail. Other close attractions include Anna Ruby Falls, Dukes Creek Falls, and Ravens Cliff Falls. Hunting is also a popular activity in the Chattahoochee Wildlife Management Area.
  • Close to Helen, GA: Despite its rustic nature, the charming alpine village of Helen is just a few miles away, offering unique shopping, dining, tubing on the river, and seasonal festivals like Oktoberfest for a change of pace.
