While Loon Campground offers a rustic and authentic camping experience, it provides essential services that cater to the needs of wilderness adventurers. Keep in mind that "services" in a wilderness campground typically refer to the provisions for fundamental camping needs rather than amenities found at commercial parks. These include:
- Designated Campsites: Loon Campground features individual, well-maintained campsites designed for privacy and minimal environmental impact. Each site is capable of accommodating up to six people, ensuring a more personal and less crowded experience.
- Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring, allowing campers to enjoy a quintessential campfire experience for cooking and warmth, adhering to safety guidelines.
- Picnic Tables: Basic picnic tables are provided at each site for meal preparation and outdoor dining.
- Vault Toilets: Primitive vault toilets are available, maintaining sanitation standards in the wilderness setting.

- Trash Disposal (Pack It In, Pack It Out): Consistent with wilderness ethics, visitors are expected to pack out all trash and leave no trace, contributing to the preservation of the pristine environment.
- Access for Canoes/Kayaks: The campground offers excellent access for launching canoes and kayaks directly onto the lake, making it ideal for paddling enthusiasts.
- Backpacking Access: For those who prefer to trek, the campground is accessible via established backpacking trails within the Sylvania Wilderness.
Loon Campground stands out for several unique features and highlights that make it a truly exceptional destination for Michigan residents seeking a genuine outdoor adventure:

- Year-Round Accessibility (with caution): As highlighted by a past visitor, Loon Campground is accessible even in winter months, offering a unique opportunity for cold-weather camping and experiencing the serene beauty of a snow-covered wilderness. However, campers should be prepared for thin ice and exposure to winds during colder seasons.
- Wildlife Viewing: The Sylvania Wilderness is home to a diverse array of wildlife. Visitors often report sightings of various bird species, deer, and other forest creatures, enhancing the wilderness experience.
- Quiet and Serene Atmosphere: The absence of motorboats on the lake and the general remoteness contribute to an incredibly quiet and peaceful atmosphere, allowing for true relaxation and reflection.

Loon Campground Reviews
I camped here in the winter and it was great. Had the entire lake to myself! No paddling, just thin ice that I had to dodge in spots. The campsite is exposed to winds off the lake so beware of that if you don't like a little breeze.
Jun 13, 2023 · Nathan MillerFirst of all, this is the LOON campsite, not the Leon campground - all the sites in the Sylvania Wilderness are single sites for up to six people, not campgrounds. This is one of the best sites in the Sylvania Wilderness, with a great beach, privacy, and access by both canoe/kayak and backpacking. Spectacular old growth forest and fishing (catch and release only for bass )Google, please fix the name of the site on your map !
