Long Draw Campground

Long Draw Rd, Bellvue, CO 80512, USA

4.0
Such a great little spot! We will definitely be returning :-)Easy going, friendly host. Moose/elk/deer all grazing nearby! BEAUTIFUL! About a 5 minute drive to Longdraw Reservoir from the campground. Road in was well maintained. Even a small car could make it in during summer months... although, if weather is bad I would definitely wait. It can get really bad really fast up there. Bring emergency gear- do not underestimate mother natures ability to take a routine weekend trip and make it a nightmare. This is true wilderness and if you choose to go, use your brain a bit... remember the 6 P's (prior planning prevents piss poor performance)😉There are areas all around the lake that are good for dispersed camping...just please be aware of bears and other wildlife and for God's sake PACK OUT YOUR DANG TRASH!Campground was inexpensive and nicely laid out with both tent and RV areas...but further down the road you can dispersed camp for free.HAVE FUN!!! - Bryce Robinson

Long Draw Campground Introduce

For Colorado locals yearning for a quintessential Rocky Mountain experience, Long Draw Campground near Bellvue offers an absolutely incredible, breathtaking spot. Situated at a robust 10,030 feet (or approximately 10,100 feet according to some visitors) in elevation within the stunning Roosevelt National Forest, this campground is a true high-country escape. It’s a beautifully wooded and quiet place to stay, providing a serene environment perfect for disconnecting and immersing yourself in nature’s grandeur.

Long Draw Campground is not just a place to set up camp; it's a gateway to an abundance of natural wonders and outdoor activities. It's renowned as the "Moose capital of the continental United States," offering unparalleled opportunities to witness these magnificent creatures grazing nearby. Beyond wildlife, the area boasts a "mind-boggling" night sky, making it a dream for astrophotography enthusiasts, and the "Long Draw Reservoir is amazing for boating and fishing." While it can get "a little chilly at night" in a tent due to the high elevation, this can be easily managed with a good sleeping bag. Visitors consistently praise the "friendly host" and "exceptionally clean restrooms," making this "inexpensive" and "nicely laid out" campground a must-see destination for Coloradoans seeking true wilderness beauty.

Location and Accessibility

Long Draw Campground is located on Long Draw Rd, Bellvue, CO 80512, USA. This places it deep within the Roosevelt National Forest, on the west side of Cameron Pass, at an impressive elevation of approximately 10,030 to 10,100 feet. The campground is situated just a "5 minute drive to Long Draw Reservoir from the campground," making it perfectly positioned for reservoir-based activities.

Accessing Long Draw Campground involves a scenic, but important, drive. From Fort Collins, you would typically travel north on U.S. Highway 287 for about 10 miles, then turn left (west) onto Colorado Highway 14. You'll continue on Highway 14 for approximately 53 miles, a journey through the stunning Poudre Canyon. Finally, you turn left (south) onto Long Draw Road (National Forest System Road 156). The campground is about 10 miles down this unpaved road.

Reviewers note that the "Road in was well maintained," and "even a small car could make it in during summer months." However, visitors are strongly cautioned that "if weather is bad I would definitely wait. It can get really bad really fast up there." This high-elevation area is subject to rapid weather changes, including sudden thunderstorms, hail, or early season snow. "Bring emergency gear" and "do not underestimate mother natures ability to take a routine weekend trip and make it a nightmare." This highlights the importance of "prior planning" for a trip into this true wilderness. Given its remote nature, cellular service is likely to be very limited or non-existent, ensuring a proper off-grid experience. The road is typically closed to vehicles in winter but becomes a popular route for backcountry skiing and snowshoeing.
