Little Dune II Campsite

Grand Island Rd, Munising, MI 49862, USA

4.0
This site was a relatively easy hike in. The view amd access to the bay is great. Deer flies were bad but after we killed about 50 of them, they seemed to drop-off. The walk to the woodbox for firewood wasn't my favorite but at least wood is provided at a central spot. The tombolo is really neat and lends contrast to the sandy beach. The vault toilet wasn't bad for a vault toilet. - Jason Holmes

This isn't your typical roadside campground; it's a secluded gem designed for those who embrace the challenge of a hike-in or boat-in adventure and seek a deep connection with the pristine nature of Lake Superior. As Michiganders, we cherish our access to incredible natural landscapes, and Grand Island truly delivers. Little Dune II is specifically for campers who are prepared for a rustic setting, valuing peace, stunning views, and the unique geographical features over extensive amenities. It’s a perfect spot for individuals, couples, or small families (up to 4 people and 2 tents) looking to truly disconnect and experience the raw beauty of the Upper Peninsula.

Little Dune II Campsite is located on Grand Island, near Munising, MI 49862. This address places it within the congressionally designated Grand Island National Recreation Area, just half a mile from the mainland community of Munising. What makes its location unique is that Grand Island is accessible only by passenger ferry, private watercraft (like kayaks or canoes), hiking, or biking. Public vehicles are not allowed on the island, contributing to its untouched feel. Little Dune II is situated on the eastern edge of Trout Bay beach, approximately 4 miles northeast of William's Landing, which is the main ferry arrival point and visitor information center on the island. The "relatively easy hike in" mentioned by a reviewer suggests well-maintained trails from the ferry landing or other island access points. Kayakers can easily pull their kayaks ashore to access the site directly from the water, making it a fantastic destination for paddle-in camping. While nestled in nature, its proximity to Munising (via the ferry) means that mainland services are still within reach for supplies or emergencies. This balance of remote tranquility and accessible resources makes Grand Island, and specifically Little Dune II, a highly desirable location for Michigan outdoor enthusiasts.
