Little Crater Lake Campground is perfectly situated to offer Oregonians a serene escape while remaining reasonably accessible from various parts of the state. Its address at Champion Way, Sandy, OR 97055, USA, places it within the vast and beautiful Mt. Hood National Forest, a beloved recreational area for locals.
From the city of Sandy, which serves as a gateway to this part of the forest, travel east on Highway 26 for approximately 40 miles to Skyline Road (Road 42). A right turn onto Skyline Road, followed by about 4 miles south, and then another right onto Forest Road 58 for 2 miles, will lead you directly to the campground. While the last portion of the journey involves forest roads, they are generally manageable, providing a sense of seclusion without being overly difficult to navigate for most vehicles. It's recommended to check local forest service road conditions, especially during the shoulder seasons, as weather can impact accessibility.
The campground's elevation at 3,300 feet (some sources also state 3,400 feet for the area near Timothy Lake) contributes to its refreshing atmosphere, particularly during warmer months. Its proximity to both the stunning Little Crater Lake and the larger Timothy Lake offers a dual appeal, providing diverse water-based recreational opportunities. This location within the Mt. Hood National Forest means campers are surrounded by a rich evergreen forest, often with a thick understory of rhododendron, contributing to the feeling of being "far away from fellow campers," as one reviewer noted, despite having other sites nearby. This balance of being within reach for Oregon locals yet feeling wonderfully remote is a significant advantage of Little Crater Lake Campground.

You can also keep going and either walk down to Timothy lake, or walk along the Pacific Crest trail.
