This place was freaking beautiful and have plenty of campsites for sure and had a nice little waterfall and plenty of beautiful views for sure there's this road to the left of the main campsite that you can go down and it has plenty of other campsites but I I would recommend that you have a 4 x 4 or something with more off-roading capabilities I would definitely come back to this place it was amazing and I really enjoyed it - Tj Anderson

Lincoln Gulch Campground Introduce

For Coloradans who truly appreciate the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains and seek a more primitive, immersive camping experience, Lincoln Gulch Campground offers an authentic high-country retreat. Nestled in a breathtaking natural setting, this campground is a perfect antidote to overcrowded resort areas, providing a chance to disconnect and reconnect with nature. With its stunning views, the soothing sound of converging streams, and even a charming waterfall, Lincoln Gulch Campground promises a memorable adventure for those willing to venture a little off the beaten path. It's an ideal spot for experienced campers and adventurers looking for true wilderness immersion.

Lincoln Gulch Campground is located near Almont, CO 81210, USA. This places it within the vast and stunning Gunnison National Forest, offering a remote yet accessible escape into the heart of the Rockies. To reach the campground, visitors typically travel along a road that, while scenic, can become quite rough, especially in its latter half. For the initial stretch, a 2-wheel drive sedan or compact vehicle may suffice, but for those planning to explore further or reach areas like Portal Campground down the road, an SUV or a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended due to the challenging terrain. The campground is nestled between two converging streams, creating a picturesque and tranquil setting. This location also provides excellent access to numerous outdoor activities characteristic of the Colorado mountains, including hiking, fishing, and exploring the vast national forest lands. While the remote nature means there is no cell service, this very feature contributes to the peaceful isolation that many campers seek. The nearest towns, such as Almont and Crested Butte, offer opportunities for resupply, dining, and other amenities, ensuring that while you're immersed in nature, you're not entirely cut off from civilization.

Lincoln Gulch Campground focuses on providing essential services that support a rustic, wilderness camping experience. It's designed for campers who are prepared for a more self-sufficient stay rather than seeking extensive modern conveniences.

  • Campsites: The main campground has a limited number of sites, typically around 7, making it a smaller, more intimate setting. These sites are suitable for tents and possibly smaller RVs or trailers, depending on the specific site and vehicle capabilities.
  • Bear Lockers: Crucially for a high-country Colorado campground, bear-proof food storage lockers are provided at each site. This is vital for visitor safety and preventing human-wildlife conflicts, as bears are active in the area. All food, toiletries, and scented items must be stored securely.
  • Vault Toilets: Well-maintained vaulted toilets are available within the campground, offering basic and necessary restroom facilities for campers.
  • Dispersed Camping Options: Beyond the main campground, there are numerous additional campsites available along the rougher roads to the left of the main area. These dispersed sites offer even greater privacy and a true wilderness feel, though they generally require a 4x4 vehicle or something with better off-roading capabilities to access.
  • Fire Rings: Most campsites are equipped with fire rings, allowing campers to have campfires (when fire restrictions permit) and enjoy the traditional camping experience.
  • No Cell Service: It's important for visitors to note that there is no cell service at the campground. This contributes to the "unplugged" nature of the experience and encourages a deeper connection with the natural surroundings.
  • Proximity to Portal Campground: For those who find Lincoln Gulch full or prefer to explore other nearby options, Portal Campground is located further down the road, offering additional sites, though access may require a more robust vehicle.

Lincoln Gulch Campground stands out for several key features and highlights that draw campers seeking an authentic Colorado adventure:

  • Freaking Beautiful Views: The campground is consistently praised for its stunning natural beauty. Surrounded by towering trees (where they remain after avalanches) and nestled within a picturesque valley, the scenic vistas are truly amazing.
  • Water Feature: The presence of a "nice little waterfall" and the soothing sounds of two converging streams create an incredibly serene and picturesque environment, perfect for relaxation and enjoying nature's soundtrack.
  • Abundance of Campsites (Including Dispersed): While the main campground is small, the availability of "plenty of other campsites" down a more rugged road provides ample options for those with 4x4 vehicles, ensuring that finding a spot is often possible, even if the main sites are full.
  • Privacy: The campsites, particularly the dispersed ones, offer a high degree of privacy, allowing campers to feel truly immersed in the wilderness without being "on top of" other campers.
  • Authentic Wilderness Experience: This campground is ideal for those who prefer a rustic, less developed camping environment. It provides a genuine opportunity to disconnect from modern conveniences and enjoy the raw beauty of the Colorado mountains.
  • Accessibility to Off-roading: For adventurers with 4x4 vehicles, the roads leading to additional dispersed sites offer an exciting off-roading experience, adding an extra layer of adventure to the trip.
  • Cooler Temperatures: Being in a mountainous, high-altitude region, the campground offers a refreshing escape from the summer heat, providing comfortable camping conditions.
  • Sense of Seclusion: The lack of cell service and the rougher access roads contribute to a sense of seclusion and escape, allowing visitors to truly unwind and enjoy the tranquility of the wilderness.

For Coloradans with a 4x4 vehicle, it opens up a world of secluded dispersed camping spots, allowing for a personalized and private encounter with nature. The "freaking beautiful" views, the soothing sound of the waterfall and streams, and the opportunity to truly disconnect (no cell service!) align perfectly with the desire for a genuine Rocky Mountain escape. While the road might be rough and some tree cover has been lost due to natural events, these elements are part of its wild charm. It's a place where you can catch fish, hike rugged trails, and truly feel immersed in the grandeur of Colorado. For the seasoned local camper who values stunning scenery, privacy, and a more primitive setting over extensive amenities, Lincoln Gulch Campground is an amazing place that promises a return visit.
