Letchworth D Cabins

Hunt, NY 14846, USA

4.0
There are many cabins at Letchworth Park, and this review only applies to one, cabin D003, a small two-person-log-cabin. The D and E cabins are located on the not so public, much quieter side of the gorge, by the parade grounds. We stayed at the end of September 2020 from Tuesday to Friday morning. We typically tent camp, but I wanted something to get us up off the ground and give us some headroom. So I considered this to be our "log cabin tent." And as you can see, it was only slightly larger then our tent. It came with two cots that could not be put together, so if you are planning on a good time, you better be flexible. The cabin had electricity with plenty of outlets, one overhead light, one porch light, a small electric stove, a fridge, a small table, and two wooden chairs. We had to take out one of the chairs just to get the beds to fit. The site had a fire-ring as apparently fireplaces are out of fashion. There was room for a overhead tarp which we set up to give us more covered outdoor space. The site was very rough and not ADA safe at all. The bathrooms were a treat, very new, with nice showers, and they were ADA compliant so I imagine that some of the cabins are also. The check in is at the Visitors Center. We went nutty trying to figure that out. All in all, it was worth it to rent the cabin. We stayed dry in the heavy overnight rain, if we needed to warm up, we turned on the oven, we didn't need to buy ice for the cooler. And we camp to sit outside by the fire, not sit inside. - Michael Riley

Letchworth D Cabins Introduce

letchworth cabins

For New Yorkers, Letchworth State Park is a jewel in our state's crown, often hailed as the "Grand Canyon of the East." While many flock to its famous waterfalls and main attractions, a different kind of experience awaits those seeking a more rustic and secluded stay: the Letchworth D Cabins. These cabins offer a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the park's natural beauty from a quieter, less-traveled side, providing a "log cabin tent" experience for those who prefer to be off the ground while still embracing the essence of camping.

A recent guest aptly described their stay in Cabin D003 as a comfortable alternative to tent camping, appreciating the electricity, refrigerator, and the ability to stay dry during heavy rain. They highlighted the joy of being able to "sit outside by the fire, not sit inside," truly capturing the spirit of outdoor living. It's important for prospective visitors to understand that these cabins, particularly the D and E series, are known for their rustic nature. As one reviewer noted, they are located on the "not so public, much quieter side of the gorge, by the parade grounds." This intentional rusticity provides a genuine connection to the park's wilderness, appealing to those who embrace a simpler, more rugged approach to their state park adventure.

Location and Accessibility

Letchworth D Cabins are located within the expansive and breathtaking Letchworth State Park, with a mailing address of Hunt, NY 14846, USA. Letchworth State Park itself spans across Livingston and Wyoming Counties in Western New York, encompassing the magnificent Genesee River Gorge. This iconic park is a significant natural landmark for New Yorkers, drawing visitors with its dramatic cliffs, three major waterfalls, and extensive trail system.

The D and E cabins are specifically situated on the east side of the Genesee River, near the "Parade Grounds," which is often described as a quieter and less public section of the park compared to the more heavily trafficked areas around the main waterfalls. For New Yorkers driving from major cities like Buffalo, Rochester, or even Syracuse, Letchworth State Park is a relatively accessible destination, offering a scenic drive into the heart of Western New York's natural beauty.

Accessibility to the D Cabins within the park requires visitors to navigate to the Visitors Center for check-in. This detail, as one reviewer pointed out, is important to note for a smooth arrival. The D and E cabins are often in more remote sections, meaning a vehicle is generally necessary to reach them and to explore the wider park. While the sites themselves might be "rough" as one reviewer noted, the ability to drive close to your cabin and unload supplies is a convenience. The secluded location provides a tranquil base from which to explore the vast network of trails and overlooks that Letchworth State Park is famous for, offering a unique blend of solitude and access to one of New York's most celebrated natural wonders.
