In this comprehensive overview, we'll delve into the specifics of Leo Carrillo State Park Campground, highlighting its prime location and accessibility, the array of services and facilities that make it so popular, and the unique features that set it apart. We aim to provide a clear, engaging, and factual description, emphasizing why this particular "campground" is exceptionally suitable for Californians seeking a quintessential coastal camping experience.
Leo Carrillo State Park Campground is ideally located at 35000 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265, USA. This address places it directly along the famed Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in the picturesque Malibu area, at the western end of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Its prime coastal location offers easy vehicle access, making it a convenient destination for campers traveling from various parts of Southern California, including Los Angeles, Ventura County, and beyond.
The campground is situated amidst the shade of towering sycamore trees within a canyon, providing a refreshing contrast to the open beach environment just a short walk away. Access to the beach is straightforward, often via an underpass beneath PCH, ensuring a safe and direct route for campers to enjoy the sand and surf. While some campsites are closer to Highway 1, potentially leading to some car noise, many sites are sufficiently secluded to offer peace and quiet from other campers, allowing for a more immersive natural experience.
For those arriving without a car, Leo Carrillo State Park Campground also features dedicated "Hike and Bike" locations. These sites cater specifically to cyclists and backpackers, offering a more secluded spot with basic amenities like water and tables. This makes it an excellent choice for local adventurers who prefer eco-friendly travel or are embarking on a longer cycling tour of the California coast. The combination of easy car access for most and specialized sites for alternative transportation truly highlights its versatile accessibility for the California outdoor enthusiast.
- Stocked Campground Store: A convenient on-site store is "always stocked and has the essentials you need," ensuring campers can easily purchase forgotten items or snacks.

- Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, ideal for outdoor dining and campfires (subject to fire restrictions).
- Potable Water: Fresh, potable water is available at various points throughout the campground, making it easy to refill water bottles and wash up.
- RV and Tent Sites: The campground accommodates both RVs (with some sites offering power hookups, though not all) and tent campers, including dedicated "Hike and Bike" sites for non-motorized travelers.
- Trash Collection: Designated trash receptacles are available for waste disposal, promoting cleanliness and responsible camping.
- Staff Assistance: The staff are consistently described as "amazing" and friendly, contributing to a positive and welcoming experience for campers.
- Shaded Campsites: The campground is nestled among beautiful sycamore trees, providing natural shade, which is a significant advantage during warmer California days.
- Direct Beach Access: Close proximity and often an underpass allow for easy walking access to a mile and a half of beach, perfect for swimming, surfing, exploring tide pools, and beachcombing.
- Dog-Friendly Beach: A major highlight for pet owners, the beach at Leo Carrillo State Park is dog-friendly, allowing furry family members to enjoy the coastal fun.
- Wildlife Viewing: Campers often have opportunities to observe local wildlife, including coyotes running through the camp, and various bird species, enhancing the natural experience.
- Hiking Opportunities: Numerous trails in the surrounding Santa Monica Mountains provide options for hiking and exploring the diverse coastal canyon ecosystem.
- Secluded "Hike and Bike" Sites: These dedicated sites offer a more private camping experience, away from the main car camping areas, appealing to a specific niche of campers.
- Digital Detox: The lack of cell service inside the campground is frequently cited as a positive feature, allowing for a much-needed "reset" and fostering a deeper connection with nature and fellow campers.
- Consistent Quality: Repeated visits by campers over the years attest to the consistent cleanliness of facilities and the overall positive experience.
- Natural Ambiance: The setting amidst trees and close to the ocean, coupled with the absence of constant digital distractions, creates a truly relaxing and immersive natural environment.

Leo Carrillo State Park Campground Reviews
We have camped here the past few years and have our annual camping trip booked for this summer here. We love it!! The store is always stocked and has the essentials you need. We always get the same campsite. Showers and bathrooms always clean with hot water. Yes you have to pay for shower and get tokens but who cares! Staff is amazing! Never have had any issues. See wild life. Watched a coyote run through the camp, it was super cool! The beach isn't far and we bring our dogs. Beautiful campground. No cell service inside campground which is perfect, get the "reset" that we need. We absolutely love it here!
Jun 11, 2025 · Jeannie HrapchakLast weekend I tried out 3 Hike and Bike locations ( Refugio, Carpinteria and Leo Carrillo) around Santa Barbara. Leo Carrillo is the most secluded. Nice trees overhead, water and 3 tables. It is a walk to get to the Shower / Restroom. It is close to Highway 1 so you do get some car noise. But it is away from the noise of the other campers. Some campsites do have power. I did not try charging at an unused site. Did not check it out, but there is some type of store
Jun 30, 2025 · E David CallenderThis review is only about the hiking trail. Fairly easy uphill hike, all on dirt which is gentle on the joints. We hiked up to the ocean vista trail and it was so beautiful! 💯 Percent recommend to see the amazing views. The only downside is that there isn't much shade on most of the trail, no trees and the grass and shrubbery are low so the sun is burning down on you the whole time. Wear sunscreen and a hat ifyou go any time except the early morning. Take water with electrolytes because there are no fountains up there. The grass and flowers are gorgeous, we even saw a little bunny on the trail the day before 🐰 Easter.
Apr 25, 2025 · LisaStayed Here three nights, Loved it! The beach is not great for swimming, but great for exploring and we saw a See Lion up close! The caves are awesome, the Kids loved it! The Camping has super big nice spots with great trees to climb. Bathrooms were clean, coin showers worked most of the time. Highly recommend it, especially with Kids!
Mar 20, 2025 · Nat TokaThe best near-beach camping we've found. Campsites are roomy and shady. Restrooms and showers are clean. There is a walkway under Highway 1 to get to a beautiful beach. Although the walkway was damaged and covered with rocks during recent flooding, it is still passable. We were. There during cool March weather. The waves coming into the beach we're amazing.
