Larson Campground

Campground ★4.0

Heber, AZ 85931, USA

4.0
This place is amazing! Don’t listen to the person who said something about the power lines. If you can drive up the road as we did, you’re miles away from the lines. Anyway, beautiful place, good amount of camp-spots on the left and right of the road. We camped like right up along the rim!! So awesome. No issues at all. There is a bathroom at the start of the road, but we are in the wood. We camped few miles out from the bathrooms. Would come back 100%. Came here on the fly, since RIM road was closed up the road. - J Howe

Larson Campground Introduce

For Arizona's outdoor enthusiasts, finding a camping spot that combines stunning natural beauty with a sense of genuine wilderness can be a challenge. Larson Campground, located near Heber in the heart of the state's high country, is a perfect answer to that search. It offers a dispersed camping experience that is both rugged and rewarding, providing a true escape from city life. Situated in the beautiful Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, this area is a favorite among those who want to set up camp right on the edge of the Mogollon Rim, offering breathtaking views and a feeling of being a world away.

This guide is tailored for local Arizona residents, providing a clear and honest overview of what to expect at Larson Campground. We will delve into its location, the kind of experience it offers, and the key highlights that make it a compelling choice for your next adventure. While it can be busy, its unique features make it a must-visit for anyone who values wildlife, epic views, and the freedom of dispersed camping.

Location and Accessibility

Larson Campground is located near Heber, Arizona, with the official address listed as Heber, AZ 85931, USA. It is more accurately described as the Larson Ridge Camping Area within the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. It is a dispersed camping area, meaning there are no designated, numbered sites in the traditional sense, but rather a number of spots along the road where campers can set up. One reviewer mentioned finding "a good amount of camp-spots on the left and right of the road," with the option to camp "right up along the rim."

Accessibility to the campground is a notable feature. A user review highlights that "Roads were in great shape for any type or size of vehicle or trailers." This is a significant advantage, as it makes the area accessible to a wide range of campers, from those in small passenger vehicles to those towing large trailers. While the road is in good condition, visitors should be aware that, as one review points out, it is highly used and can become very dusty, especially during dry periods. Many ATVs and other vehicles frequent the area, contributing to the dust but also speaking to its popularity as a hub for off-roading activities.

Services Offered

Larson Campground is a primitive camping area, meaning services are limited but functional. This is a "boondocking" experience, so campers should be prepared to be largely self-sufficient.

  • Restrooms and Water: While it is a primitive site, a user review mentions that there is "a bathroom at the start of the road." This is a valuable amenity for a dispersed camping area. It is important to note that a public source from the Forest Service mentions that there is no potable water. Campers should bring their own water supply for drinking, cooking, and sanitation.
  • On-site Parking: The campground offers on-site parking, with spots available near the various camping areas. The road's good condition makes it easy to park even with larger rigs.
  • Tent Sites: The area is well-suited for tent camping, with many spots available both close to and a few miles away from the main road.
  • Camping Fee: A camping fee is mentioned in the provided information, but the Forest Service site for Larson Ridge Camping Area does not list a fee. It's best to check with the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests directly for the most current fee schedule, as regulations can change.

Features / Highlights

Larson Campground's appeal lies in its stunning natural features and the sheer freedom it offers.

  • The Mogollon Rim: The most prominent highlight is the opportunity to camp along the Mogollon Rim itself. One camper was "right up along the rim," which provides unparalleled, panoramic views of the canyons and forests below. This scenic view is what makes Larson Campground so sought-after.
  • Abundant Wildlife: The area is renowned for its wildlife. A reviewer stated, "It's the only place I have ever seen that much wildlife in just one stay," mentioning that "Coyotes noisy at night." This provides a fantastic opportunity for wildlife viewing and photography, adding an element of true wilderness to the experience.
  • Hiking: The area offers excellent hiking opportunities. The Rim Road itself provides a path for scenic walks and exploration. Additionally, the surrounding forest is crisscrossed with trails and forest roads, perfect for those who want to hike.
  • ATV/OHV Access: The presence of many ATVs, as noted in a review, indicates that the area is a popular destination for off-highway vehicle enthusiasts. While this can create dust, it also means there are many trails and roads to explore for those with an ATV.
  • Dispersed and Secluded Feel: Despite being highly used, the area's spread-out nature allows campers to find a spot that feels secluded. The vastness of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests means that even when the main spots are busy, there is always a chance to find a quiet corner.

Contact Information

As a dispersed camping area, there is no direct phone number for Larson Campground itself. All inquiries should be directed to the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests.

What is Worth Choosing

Larson Campground is worth choosing for the Arizona resident who values an authentic, no-frills camping experience with spectacular views. It is not the right choice for those who want a quiet, reserved spot with full amenities. Instead, its value lies in its rustic nature and the freedom it provides. The ability to camp right on the rim, with miles of forest to explore and an abundance of wildlife, is a major draw.

The campground’s accessibility, with well-maintained roads suitable for all vehicles, makes it an easy choice for a last-minute trip, as one reviewer mentioned. It's an excellent base for a weekend of hiking, ATV riding, or simply relaxing and taking in the incredible views. While the dust and crowds on a busy weekend are something to be prepared for, the unique energy and natural beauty of the area make it an unforgettable destination. For a camper who appreciates a blend of ruggedness and stunning scenery, Larson Campground is a top-tier choice in Arizona's high country.
