Our beautiful state offers a diverse array of outdoor experiences, and nestled within its scenic landscapes are hidden gems waiting to be discovered. One such place, Lake Robertson Campground, offers a distinctly private and isolated camping experience for those who truly wish to disconnect and immerse themselves in the tranquility of the great outdoors. Located near the historic city of Lexington, this campground provides a unique opportunity for local residents to enjoy a peaceful retreat without traveling far from home.
This article is designed to provide a clear, engaging, and factual overview of Lake Robertson Campground, tailored specifically for our Virginia neighbors. We’ll delve into its location, the services it provides, its notable features, and what makes it a suitable option for those seeking a more secluded camping adventure. Our aim is to give you all the information you need to decide if Lake Robertson Campground is the perfect spot for your next local outdoor escape.
Lake Robertson Campground is conveniently located at State Rte 652, Lexington, VA 24450, USA. This placement puts it within the picturesque Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia, an area renowned for its stunning natural beauty, historical significance, and outdoor recreational opportunities. While the exact driving experience can vary, it’s important for visitors to be aware that the road leading to the campsite has been described by some as "very very dangerous" for pulling a trailer. This suggests that while accessible, drivers of larger vehicles, particularly RVs and trailers, should exercise extreme caution and potentially consider the route carefully before embarking on their journey. For those without trailers, or experienced RVers accustomed to challenging roads, the drive may present less of an issue, but preparedness is key.
The campground’s location, while offering privacy, means it’s a bit off the main thoroughfares, contributing to its isolated charm. This seclusion is a major draw for campers seeking a quiet environment away from crowded areas. Despite its private feel, it remains within a reasonable driving distance for many Virginia residents, making it a viable option for weekend trips or longer stays. Its proximity to Lexington, Virginia, also means that while you’re enjoying the solitude of the campground, you’re not entirely cut off from the conveniences and attractions of a charming historical town, should you wish to explore beyond the campsite.
While the primary appeal of Lake Robertson Campground lies in its natural setting and privacy, it also offers a range of services designed to provide a comfortable camping experience. Based on publicly available information and customer reviews, here’s what you can generally expect:
Campsites: The campground offers various campsites that are noted for not being "super crowded on top of each other." This spacing contributes significantly to the private and isolated feel that many campers seek. While specific details on hookups (electric, water, sewer) are not universally detailed, the presence of RVs suggests some level of accommodation for them.
Bathhouse Facilities: A key amenity mentioned in reviews is the bathhouse, which has been described as "clean." While some may find elements "outdated," the focus on cleanliness is a significant positive for many campers, ensuring a more comfortable stay when showering or using restrooms.
Lake Access: Direct access to Lake Robertson is a primary service, allowing for activities like John boating and fishing. This provides a central recreational focus for campers.
Trash Disposal: While not explicitly detailed, campgrounds typically provide designated areas for waste disposal to maintain cleanliness.
Picnic Areas: Individual campsites often include picnic tables, allowing for outdoor dining and gathering.
It’s important for potential visitors to note that while the bathhouse is generally considered clean, there have been comments about the presence of smoke from campfires, which is a common occurrence at many campgrounds, but something to be aware of if you are particularly sensitive to it. For the most up-to-date and specific information on available services and any potential seasonal limitations, contacting the campground directly is always recommended.
Lake Robertson Campground boasts several distinct features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for specific types of campers, particularly those residing in Virginia who prioritize privacy and natural immersion:
Private and Isolated Setting: This is arguably the top highlight. Unlike many crowded campgrounds, Lake Robertson offers a genuinely secluded experience. Sites are well-spaced, contributing to a feeling of being "away from the hustle and bustle of cities" and not "super crowded on top of each other." This makes it ideal for those seeking peace and quiet.
Lake Activities: The presence of Lake Robertson itself is a major draw. It's suitable for activities such as John boating, and fishing is a popular pastime, with reports of successful catfish catches. This provides a central point for water-based recreation and relaxation.
Quiet Atmosphere: Due to its isolated nature and less crowded conditions, the campground offers a notably quiet atmosphere, allowing campers to truly unwind and enjoy the sounds of nature rather than constant noise from neighboring sites.
Relaxed Pace: The uncrowded environment fosters a more relaxed pace of camping. There's less pressure for prime spots, and more freedom to enjoy your surroundings at your own leisure.
Star Gazing Potential: Away from significant urban light pollution, the secluded setting of Lake Robertson Campground likely offers excellent opportunities for stargazing on clear nights.
Potential for Wildlife Observation: As a natural, isolated area, the campground and its surroundings could offer opportunities for observing local wildlife in their natural habitat, contributing to the immersive experience.
While the road to the campground can be challenging for trailers, and some campsites might require initial tidying, these aspects are often considered minor trade-offs by those who highly value the unique sense of privacy and tranquility that Lake Robertson provides. It's a place where the primary focus is on peaceful communion with nature.
As a local Virginia resident considering a trip to Lake Robertson Campground, it's always worth exploring if any promotions or special offers are available. While specific, widely advertised discounts for campgrounds like Lake Robertson might not always be prevalent, there are avenues to explore for potential savings or added value.
Firstly, because it’s a county-run or locally managed facility, sometimes local residents, seniors, or veterans might be eligible for specific discounts. It’s always best to inquire directly with the campground management about any such programs. These types of localized offers are not usually found on large booking platforms.
Secondly, consider visiting during off-peak seasons. Campgrounds often have lower rates or less demand during non-holiday periods or outside of the traditional summer season. For Lake Robertson, if the goal is solitude, an off-season visit could provide even greater privacy at a potentially reduced cost. For instance, early spring or late fall could offer pleasant weather for camping with fewer crowds.
Finally, while group discounts are not explicitly mentioned, if you are planning a trip with multiple families or a larger group, it might be beneficial to inquire if any group rates or block booking discounts are available. Always contact the campground directly to ask about any current or upcoming promotions that might apply to your visit. Websites or social media channels (if applicable) managed by the local county parks and recreation department might also announce special offers.

They can also confirm details on specific amenities and site features that might be important for your camping preferences.
For Virginia residents, Lake Robertson Campground offers a compelling and often overlooked alternative to more crowded camping destinations. Its distinct advantage lies in its commitment to providing a private and isolated experience, a rarity in today’s bustling world. If your idea of a perfect getaway involves disconnecting from city noise, enjoying the quiet serenity of nature, and having ample space to yourself, then Lake Robertson is undoubtedly a suitable choice right here in our beautiful state.
While the access road may require careful navigation, especially for those with trailers, this minor challenge is often seen as a small price to pay for the unparalleled tranquility found within. The clean bathhouse, the opportunities for boating and fishing on the lake, and the spacious campsites all contribute to a comfortable yet genuinely rustic experience. Lake Robertson Campground Reviews
Very very dangerous road to get to campsite would not recommend pulling a trailer to campsite. Campsite was dirty and un neat and full of leaves. Had to play landscaper at our campsite for it to work. Bath house was very dirty outdated did not feel comfortable being there endured smoke all weekend. People in campsite burning green wood 24/7 could not sit outside and enjoy yourself. Left a day early with no regret went to a state park and had a wonderful wonderful time there instead. We would recommend Douthat State Park instead of Lake Robertson.
May 21, 2025 · Linda HatcherLake Robertson is very private and isolated and great for people that don't mind being away from the hustle and bustle of cities. We really enjoyed our stay as the sites are not super crowded on top of each other and the campground was not crowded by any means. The lake is nice we put a John boat on and had a good time trying to catch fish... didn't have much luck with the fishing though. Although a few young boys walked off of the lake with several large catfish in their nets. Overall we had a great few days camping and if you like a private setting with clean bath house and sites that are not right up on top of each other then this is a good option.
