It’s a place where the pace slows down, and the focus shifts to relaxation and appreciation of your surroundings.
Understanding what to expect before you arrive is key to a successful trip, and this guide aims to provide you with all the essential details to plan your visit to Lake of the Woods Campground, ensuring you make the most of your California outdoor adventure.

This location places it within reasonable driving distance for many residents across Northern and Central California, making it an ideal weekend getaway or a stop on a longer road trip through the mountains.
Accessibility to the campground is generally straightforward, though it’s always wise to check road conditions, especially during shoulder seasons or after heavy precipitation, as mountain roads can be subject to changes. The drive itself is part of the experience, offering picturesque views of the changing landscapes as you ascend into the higher elevations. Once you arrive, you’ll find yourself truly immersed in a peaceful, forested environment.
While the campground offers a sense of seclusion, it's not so remote that it becomes unmanageable for typical vehicles. The proximity to Sierraville also means that basic supplies are not too far if needed, offering a convenient balance between wilderness and practicality.

Lake of the Woods Campground Reviews
I kind of hate to say too much about this place. It's my favorite local place & I would hate for it to get too crowded. It already is at times, especially since the private side of the lake is now posted "NO TRESPASSING". It's really more of an overgrown pond. One side is federal. Other side is privately owned by Sierra Pacific. Not much there on the federal side, bathroom, small earthen boat ramp, & campsites with fire ring & picnic table. There's nothing on the private side. I'm no pro, but fishing is tricky. The photo I'm posting is from before the feds 'improved' it, & moved all the campsites away from the shore because of a small frogs' habitat. I don't stomp around the shoreline, but sometimes kids are allowed to go pretty nuts, so I can see why they did it.
