This central Nebraska location places it near the heart of Columbus, providing campers with easy access to urban amenities while still offering a peaceful lakeside retreat. The campground is associated with Lake North, a scenic body of water, and is part of a recreational area managed by the Loup Power District, which often oversees recreational sites in conjunction with its hydroelectric facilities.
The address, Columbus, NE 68601, USA, indicates its direct presence within the city, making it straightforward to find for both local residents and those traveling from other parts of Nebraska. Access to the campground is generally easy, with well-maintained roads leading directly to the sites. Its proximity to downtown Columbus means that campers are just a short drive away from grocery stores, restaurants, fuel stations, and other essential services. This balance of natural serenity and urban convenience is a significant advantage, allowing campers to easily restock supplies or explore local attractions like Pawnee Park or the Andrew Jackson Higgins Memorial.
The campground’s setting by Lake North offers picturesque views and direct access to water-based activities. While the lake is man-made, with some areas featuring "steep metal walls like a reservoir," it provides a beautiful backdrop for camping and recreation. The location also connects to a broader system of trails, including the "Two Lakes Trail" which links Lake North with Lake Babcock, offering extensive opportunities for walking, biking, and enjoying the natural surroundings. This excellent accessibility and prime location make Lake North Campground a highly practical and appealing choice for anyone looking to camp in the Columbus area.
Lake North Campground, while being a free camping destination, provides a surprising array of services that greatly enhance the camper's experience. These include:
Free Electrical Hookups: A significant highlight is the availability of free electric hookups (50, 30, and 20 amp) at each site. This is a rare and highly valued amenity for a free campground, allowing RVers and campers to power their vehicles and devices. However, users should note that the 50 amp plugs might be on the backside of the pedestals, and it's advisable to test the hookup with a phone charger before fully setting up, as individual breakers may occasionally trip if overloaded or faulty.
Individual Picnic Tables and Outdoor Grills: Each campsite is equipped with its own picnic table and an outdoor grill, providing convenient facilities for outdoor dining and cooking, enhancing the traditional camping experience.
Potable Water Access: While there are no direct water hookups at individual sites, campers can "fill up any containers for free." This communal water access ensures that fresh water is available for drinking and other needs, though RVers will need to fill their tanks before parking.
Restroom Facilities: The campground provides bathroom facilities for public use. While reviews mention they are "vaulted toilets" and "not cleaned daily like other scout camps" or that they can be "a little wanting," their availability is a key convenience for tent campers and those in RVs without full facilities.
Swimming Access: Swimming is explicitly allowed in Lake North, and the campground offers a "great beach" for this purpose. This is a popular feature, especially during warmer months, providing a refreshing way to cool off and enjoy the lake.
Fishing Opportunities: Lake North is known for fishing, offering campers the chance to cast a line directly from the shore. The lake is often described as "man-made" but is a popular spot for anglers.
Extensive Walking/Biking Path: A major draw is the "great walking path" that "goes aaaaaaaallllllllll the way around the lake." This paved trail (part of the Two Lakes Trail system) offers a scenic route of approximately 2.4 miles (or up to 4.5 miles including Lake Babcock) for walking, jogging, and biking, providing ample opportunity for exercise and enjoying nature.
Pet-Friendly Policy: Pets are allowed at the campground, provided they are kept "on a leash," making it a welcoming destination for campers traveling with their furry companions.
Lake North Campground truly stands out for several key features and highlights that contribute to its exceptional appeal, particularly given its free access.
Free Camping with Electric Hookups: This is arguably the biggest highlight. Offering free camping, complete with individual electric hookups at each site, is an extraordinary value in today's camping landscape. This accessibility makes outdoor recreation available to a wider audience, including those on a budget or trying RVing for the first time.
Quiet and Serene Atmosphere: Despite its popularity, visitors consistently describe the campground as "very quiet, serene" and a place where "everyone that comes is respectful." This peaceful environment is ideal for relaxation, offering a true escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Beautiful Lakeside Views: Waking up to a "Beautiful view" of the lake is a recurring theme in positive reviews. The scenic backdrop of Lake North significantly enhances the camping experience, providing picturesque settings for relaxation and photography.
Well-Maintained Grounds: For a free site, the campground is noted for being "Very well maintained." This dedication to upkeep ensures a pleasant and clean environment for all campers, contributing to the overall positive experience.
Extensive Multi-Use Trail: The "great walking path" that circles the lake is a significant feature. This paved "Two Lakes Trail" extends for approximately 2.4 miles around Lake North (and connects to Lake Babcock for a longer route), offering excellent opportunities for walking, running, biking, and enjoying nature at any time of day. Its accessibility also makes it suitable for various fitness levels.
Swimming Beach: The allowance for swimming and the presence of a "great beach" are major attractions, especially during the summer. This provides a refreshing and fun way to interact with the lake and beat the Nebraska heat.
Respectful Community of Campers: The community fostered at Lake North is highlighted as "respectful," indicating a self-regulating environment where campers generally adhere to quiet hours and maintain cleanliness. This contributes significantly to the peaceful ambiance.

Lake North Campground Reviews
It's a very quiet, serene campground and camping is free. Picnic table & outdoor grill at each site. Electrical hookup, not sewer or water. Pets on a leash.
Oct 05, 2024 · Nancy HarroldFantastic. As a first time rv’er you can’t beat this place. Very well maintained for a free spot and it’s a Beautiful view to wake up to. Quiet, clean and everyone that comes is respectful. Has free electric hook up but not water. However you can fill up any containers for free. Also has a bathroom to use but no rv dump. The Park for the kiddos is a little wanting but you might not even care. Swimming is allowed and has a great walking path. The electric I parked at did not work so I recommend you try them with a phone charger before you park/detach otherwise you’ll either have to reattach and move or run your cords to another hookup like I did. I blew the breaker at the hookup when I ran my ac while sharing with someone else. Just FYI.Other than that like I said it’s free and one of the best. The path I think goes aaaaaaaallllllllll the way around the lake so you can get a great walk in at anytime of day And then finish off with a dip in the water. That farmer across the street works hard if you see him say hello. 5 stars all day. 👍 good job Columbus
Apr 27, 2021 · Ken HaynesI’ve not stayed at the campground, but in December there are an over abundance of bald eagles here. It is so special to watch them.
Dec 11, 2024 · Jen MulderFree camping with electric. No water or showers though. They have toilets but it’s just a small building with no doors. Swimming is allowed but the water is pretty dirty. Saw some massive buffalo carp too. There are trash cans everywhere but apparently they are invisible to most people because there’s trash all over.
Jul 13, 2019 · Jake BaisleyGreat place to take a walk with a very nice view of the lake with beautiful sunsets...
