Known for its pristine waters and stunning mountain vistas, Lake James is a popular destination for all kinds of outdoor recreation. However, the Catawba River Access focuses on a more intimate connection with nature, catering to campers who are willing to trade a short walk for a lakeside campsite. Whether you're a seasoned backpacker or a family seeking a new experience, this campground provides a memorable backdrop for hiking, paddling, and simply relaxing by the water. This overview will help you understand what makes this particular part of Lake James State Park a special place for your next camping trip in North Carolina.
The Catawba River Access is located at 2785 NC-126, Nebo, NC 28761, USA. It's a convenient drive for many residents across the state, particularly those in the western and central regions. The park is easily accessible from major interstates, providing a straightforward journey to your outdoor escape. Once you arrive at the Catawba River Access, you’ll find a centrally located parking area. The campground itself is "walk-in," meaning you'll need to carry your gear from the parking lot to your campsite. This walk can range from 150 to 300 yards, so it’s wise to pack accordingly and consider using a wagon or a wheelbarrow (which are often provided by the park) to make the journey easier.
This walk-in design contributes to the quiet, secluded feel of the campsites, as they are not immediately next to a road or a busy parking lot. This separation from vehicles is a key feature that enhances the natural experience. The park is also committed to accessibility, with a wheelchair-accessible car park and a wheelchair-accessible entrance, ensuring that all visitors can begin their journey into the park with ease. This thoughtful design helps to preserve the pristine nature of the lakefront sites while still providing essential services at the main access point.
The services at the Catawba River Access are designed to support a traditional, tent-camping experience.
Tent Sites: The campground offers twenty walk-in tent-only sites, many of which are located along or near the shoreline, providing beautiful lakefront views.
Public Toilet & Running Water: A key amenity is the bathhouse located near the parking area, which includes toilets and hot showers. There are also potable water faucets located throughout the camping area.

The bathhouse with hot showers is a particularly welcome feature after a long day of hiking or paddling on the lake. The presence of water spigots and picnic tables at each site also makes it easy to set up camp and enjoy a comfortable stay without needing to bring extensive gear. February 08 · Jay FulcherGreat NC state park with camping right on the water. Pretty good walk to the sites from the parking lot so pack light, for fewer trips with the provided wheel barrows. Nice bathhouse at the parking lot, and lockers at the sites to store your snacks from the critters. Boat right up to your site from the lake, and we went swimming in the lake as well.Great place and nearest park to the Bigfoot festival.
May 08 · Darryl ThompsonIt was very dog friendly, the bathrooms were nice, and nice place to barbeque in the picnic area. We had fun getting warm by the fire and roasting food, too busy enjoying the peace to take pictures.
March 08 · RayneNice place but walk in camping spots aren't good at all. Most are too far or high from the water to fish or swim except a cpl really shallow spots on one side
April 20 · Me and MyselfExcellent facility. Lots of tables for fairly large gathering.
