Lake Chesdin Campground Introduce
Virginia residents looking for a tranquil and amenity-rich lakeside getaway should consider the Lake Chesdin Campground, a cherished destination that perfectly blends a rustic, natural environment with essential camping comforts. Situated on the shores of the expansive, 3,100-acre Lake Chesdin, this campground provides a serene retreat spanning 26 acres of lake frontage. It has been dedicated to offering a fun, safe, and relaxing experience for families, water sports enthusiasts, and anglers since it began operating in the 1980s.
Known for its picturesque views, particularly the stunning sunrises and sunsets over the water, Lake Chesdin Campground offers a classic, family-focused atmosphere. The current owners are committed to maintaining a friendly environment where guests feel at home, often praised by visitors for their helpful and accommodating nature. The campground is well-regarded for its cleanliness and its abundance of recreational activities, including swimming at the sandy beach, various court sports, and, of course, unparalleled access to the lake for fishing and boating.
It is important to note for RV travelers that while the campground offers electric and water hookups, most reviewers confirm the absence of a direct sewer connection at the sites. This is common for older, more rustic campgrounds but is mitigated by the provision of a convenient on-site dump station for gray and black water disposal. This small consideration is easily managed and does not detract from the overall high quality of the lakefront experience, which is consistently highly recommended by returning campers. The lake itself is a major water supply reservoir for the region, managed by the Appomattox River Water Authority, which speaks to the quality of the surrounding environment.

It is located approximately 30 miles southwest of Richmond, with a drive time of under an hour, making it an easy trip from the metropolitan area. The proximity to the Tri-Cities area (Petersburg, Colonial Heights, and Hopewell) also means that local amenities and historical sites are within a short drive.
Accessibility to the park is generally straightforward, and once there, the premises are designed with ease of use in mind. Notably, the campground provides Wheelchair Accessible Entrance and Parking Lot, ensuring that all members of the community can access the natural beauty and amenities offered. Nearby routes like U.S. Route 460 provide efficient travel to the area for visitors coming from various points across the Commonwealth. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Great camping experience! We had a water front tent site! Amy, the host is great and accommodating. I can’t remember the lady’s name at check in but she made us feel right at home. The campground is clean, family and pet friendly. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets and the fish were biting! We met some good people and enjoyed an awesome live band! I highly recommend Lake Chesdin for your next camping adventure. We will definitely be back!
September 02 · Wendell MahanWhat a lovely place with such friendly and helpful people! Just a heads up: while there’s no sewer connection, there is a convenient dump station available. Enjoy your stay!
April 01 · Vesper BAmy and her staff were fantastic! We called frantic because the campground we had originally booked was in poor condition. We had been driving for 8 hours, were frustrated, and exhausted. We started calling other Campgrounds looking for a different place to stay. Amy answered, had a spot, and even texted us the address to make sure we could find it. Well as it was, we were glad the first place didn’t work out! Lake Chesdin is BEAUTIFUL. It was quiet and clean. The sunsets on the lake are absolutely breathtaking. We had a great time and would definitely return. Thanks Amy!!!!
October 24 · Christina AllanSince we were camping primitive, Leslie and the owner suggested the campsite on the outer edge of the campground. It was quiet (other than an occasional motorist on the country road). We had a nice place under the maple tree. The campsite was clean, free of ticks too! (Anyone camping primitive can appreciate that). The bathhouse was a short hike away for the more "modern" moments of shower and toilet. We found both the owner and Leslie to be helpful and delightful. We enjoyed our stay albeit only two nights. We canoed about the lake, enjoyed some down time on the beach (canoed there) and had a great camping experience. It is a beautiful setting. Note: there are mansions on that lake that don't have the wonderful sunset view that this campground does. I camped at Leonard's when I was a teenager and while I was disappointed to find it now gone, it is good to know there is this campground available! We love that the Christian Flag waves over the office too! Praise the Lord Jesus Christ!
June 28 · Chris RI had a great time!! Beautiful!! Enjoyed the nature and the water!! Amy is very accommodating and easy to communicate with! The staff were kind and helpful! Such a peaceful place! Wish I could have stayed longer!! Will definitely be back!
