5.0
This is for miners campground, location was great and next site up the road from Kroeger. Road going is has been recently redone so there are no holes and it was easy going with several small campers able to fit. No potable water but there is a sing vault toilet for about 10 sites to share. Was able to get 1 bar of signal in spots. River is cold and fast moving but shallow. - Greg C

The essence of Kroeger Campground lies in its simplicity and its profound connection to the surrounding environment. It’s not a glamping resort, but rather a traditional campground designed for those who appreciate the raw beauty of the outdoors. This makes it particularly appealing to local Coloradans who understand and cherish the state's natural heritage. The campground promises a serene setting where the sounds of the city are replaced by the gentle rush of the river and the whispers of the wind through the trees. It’s an invitation to explore, relax, and create lasting memories in one of Colorado’s most picturesque regions.

Kroeger Campground is conveniently located at Co Rd 124, Hesperus, CO 81326, USA. Situated in Southwest Colorado, it offers excellent accessibility for residents throughout the state, particularly those in the Durango area and surrounding communities. Hesperus itself is a small, unincorporated community west of Durango, making the campground a manageable drive for many, yet far enough to feel like a true escape into the wilderness.

The accessibility of Kroeger Campground is a significant advantage for Colorado locals. While it provides a sense of remoteness and natural immersion, it's not so far off the beaten path that it becomes a logistical challenge. Reviews indicate that the "road going in has been recently redone so there are no holes and it was easy going with several small campers able to fit." This improved road condition ensures a smoother journey, even for those towing smaller trailers or RVs. This ease of access means less time spent on challenging roads and more time enjoying your outdoor adventure. Whether you're coming from Grand Junction, Denver, Colorado Springs, or closer towns like Durango, the drive to Kroeger Campground is a scenic journey that sets the tone for your natural retreat. Its proximity to established towns also means that any last-minute supplies can be acquired relatively easily before heading to the campground.

Kroeger Campground offers a set of fundamental services designed to facilitate a rustic and authentic camping experience. Based on available information and customer reviews, you can expect the following amenities:

  • Vault Toilet: The campground features a "single vault toilet for about 10 sites to share." While it's a basic amenity, it provides an essential convenience for campers. Visitors should be prepared for a rustic restroom experience.
  • Designated Campsites: The campground offers individual sites for setting up tents or parking campers. While the exact number isn't specified, the mention of "10 sites to share" a toilet gives an indication of its smaller, more intimate scale.
  • No Potable Water: It's important to note that there is "no potable water" available at the campground. Campers must bring their own water supply for drinking, cooking, and other uses. This is a crucial piece of information for planning your trip.
  • Cell Signal in Spots: For those who need to stay minimally connected, one review noted being "able to get 1 bar of signal in spots." This indicates intermittent or weak cellular service, allowing for limited communication if necessary, but also encouraging a more digital-free experience.

Given the rustic nature of Kroeger Campground, it is always recommended to come prepared with all necessary supplies, especially water, and to embrace the opportunity for a more off-grid experience.

Despite its rustic nature, Kroeger Campground boasts several compelling features and highlights that make it a highly desirable destination for Colorado outdoor enthusiasts:

  • Excellent Location and Scenery: The most common sentiment among visitors is the "beautiful" surroundings and the "great" location. Situated in Southwest Colorado, the campground is immersed in the stunning natural beauty of the region, characterized by mountains, forests, and the nearby river. This picturesque setting provides a perfect backdrop for relaxation and outdoor activities.
  • Proximity to River: The mention of a "River" that is "cold and fast moving but shallow" is a significant highlight. This suggests opportunities for various river-based activities, such as wading, fishing (check local regulations), or simply enjoying the calming sounds of flowing water. The river adds another dimension to the natural appeal of the campground.
  • Improved Road Access: A notable feature is that the "road going in has been recently redone so there are no holes and it was easy going with several small campers able to fit." This is a major advantage, ensuring that access to the campground is smooth and hassle-free, even for those with smaller vehicles or towables. It reduces concerns about rough terrain and makes the journey more enjoyable.
  • Secluded and Natural Environment: Being a smaller campground, it likely offers a more secluded and less crowded experience compared to larger, more commercial sites. This fosters a deeper connection with nature and provides a peaceful retreat from urban life. The focus here is on the natural surroundings rather than extensive man-made amenities.
  • Ideal for Rustic Camping: For those who prefer a less developed, more traditional camping experience, Kroeger Campground is ideal. It encourages self-sufficiency and a greater appreciation for the simplicity of outdoor living. It's a place where you can truly unplug and embrace the wilderness.
  • Connection to Miner's Campground: The review mentioning "This is for miners campground, location was great and next site up the road from Kroeger" suggests a close relationship or proximity to Miner's Campground. This might imply shared access to certain natural features or a similar type of rustic experience in the immediate vicinity, potentially expanding the exploration opportunities.
