4.0
Only used the campground for the night as a stopover, but we liked it. Spots 5 and 2 are by the river. The bathrooms have open pit toilets with no sink, but the one by us was clean and didn’t smell. The road is just over the river and had a lot of noise in the day time, but was surprisingly quiet at night. There were ppl fishing on the other side of the river. - Dave Johnson

Kit Carson Campground Introduce

For those of us living in California, the Sierra Nevada mountains represent an endless frontier of outdoor adventure. From challenging hikes to serene fishing spots, our state's iconic range offers countless opportunities to escape and reconnect with nature. Nestled amidst this breathtaking scenery near Markleeville, Kit Carson Campground serves as a practical and picturesque base for exploring the Carson Pass area, a historic route rich in natural beauty.

Kit Carson Campground is a smaller, more intimate camping experience, offering direct access to the Carson River and a convenient location right off a main highway. While some aspects, like road noise during the day, are part of its unique character, many visitors find its charm, cleanliness, and friendly atmosphere make it an enjoyable stopover or a quiet retreat. It’s a place that balances accessibility with natural beauty, catering to those who appreciate a no-frills camping experience with the sounds of the river surprisingly dominating the night.

Location and Accessibility

Kit Carson Campground is strategically located on Kit Carson Campground Rd, Markleeville, CA 96120, USA. This places it directly off State Route 88, a major scenic highway that traverses the Sierra Nevada mountains, making it highly accessible for travelers and campers. Its position just over the Carson River offers picturesque views and immediate access to the water.

The ease of access from a paved highway means that the campground is generally reachable by most vehicles, including RVs and trailers. While the highway is close by, which contributes to daytime noise, its convenience for a stopover or a basecamp for exploring the surrounding high Sierra region is undeniable. Given its mountainous location, it's always prudent to check Caltrans (California Department of Transportation) for current highway conditions, especially during late spring, fall, or early winter when snow or chain requirements might be in effect for Carson Pass. The campground's direct adjacency to the highway makes finding it straightforward for those using GPS or maps.

Services Offered

Kit Carson Campground provides a basic but functional set of services, geared towards a relatively self-sufficient camping experience, yet offering key amenities for comfort and convenience.

  • Campsites: The campground features individual campsites, with specific spots like #5 and #2 noted for being directly by the river. While some sites are ideal for small trailers (e.g., site #5, perfect for 2 people), it's important to note that many sites may not be ideal for pitching large family tents, so choosing a suitable site is key.
  • Picnic Tables: Each site is equipped with a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meals, games, or simply relaxing outdoors. These tables are generally described as "nice."
  • Bear Storage Boxes: A crucial amenity in bear country, the campground provides "bear storage box" at each site. These are often described as "fairly new," indicating well-maintained facilities for safe food storage.
  • Open Pit Toilets (Vault Toilets): The campground offers vault toilets (often referred to as "open pit toilets"). While not flush toilets, visitors have noted them to be "clean and didn’t smell," which is a significant positive for this type of facility.
  • No Sink/Showers: It is important to note that there are "no sink" facilities at the restrooms, and definitively "NO shower" facilities. Campers should be prepared for primitive hygiene options or plan to use nearby facilities if available.
  • On-Site Host: The presence of a "good and friendly host" contributes significantly to the positive experience, offering assistance, information, and maintaining the campground.
  • No Potable Water (Implied): While not explicitly stated, the lack of sinks and mention of pit toilets generally implies no potable water hookups at sites or central spigots. Campers should bring their own water or be prepared to filter from the river.
Features / Highlights
  • Riverside Locations: A major highlight is the direct proximity to the Carson River. Specific sites, like #5 and #2, are literally by the river, offering soothing sounds, picturesque views, and immediate access for fishing or simply enjoying the water.
