King Lake State Forest Campground Introduce
For Michiganders seeking an authentic and tranquil escape into the heart of the Upper Peninsula, King Lake State Forest Campground stands out as a hidden gem. Nestled on the scenic north shore of the beautiful King Lake, this campground offers a truly rustic and immersive outdoor experience. Unlike larger, more developed sites, King Lake SF embraces simplicity, providing a peaceful environment where the sounds of nature are your primary soundtrack. It's a cherished spot for those who prioritize quiet seclusion and direct access to Michigan’s stunning wilderness, inviting visitors to unwind and reconnect with the natural world.
King Lake itself is a substantial 498-acre lake, celebrated for its clear waters and picturesque rocky islands. These features create a captivating backdrop for a variety of outdoor activities, from serene paddling adventures to fruitful fishing excursions. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, which adds to its laid-back atmosphere and encourages spontaneous getaways. While this means flexibility is key, it often rewards campers with a genuinely uncrowded and personal encounter with the U.P.'s natural beauty, allowing for a more intimate camping experience.
Choosing King Lake State Forest Campground means opting for an experience deeply rooted in the wild landscape of Michigan. It’s a place where the simple pleasures of a crackling campfire, the gentle lapping of lake water against the shore, and the rustle of leaves in the breeze become the defining elements of your stay. For Michigan residents who hold a deep appreciation for their state's wild places, King Lake SF is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it’s a gateway to genuine outdoor living and an opportunity to create lasting memories in one of the most beautiful and secluded corners of the state. Many returning campers highlight the large, private sites and the overall peacefulness as reasons they continue to visit.
King Lake State Forest Campground is conveniently located in Covington, MI 49919, USA. More specifically, it is accessed via King Lake Road, which branches off US-41. This strategic placement offers the perfect balance: while the campground provides a profound sense of remoteness and solitude, its proximity to a major Upper Peninsula thoroughfare like US-41 ensures relatively straightforward access for visitors traveling from various parts of Michigan. This blend of being "away from it all" yet still within reach is a significant advantage for those planning their outdoor excursions, minimizing travel time on less-maintained backroads.
Accessing the campground involves driving about five miles down a one-lane dirt road, which, according to visitor reviews, is "easily traversed with any vehicle." This ensures that even those with standard cars or smaller trailers should have no trouble reaching their destination. The half-mile setback from US-41 effectively eliminates road noise, allowing campers to fully immerse themselves in the tranquil sounds of the forest and lake. This careful placement ensures that while you're enjoying the deep woods experience, you're not entirely cut off from the main routes of the U.P.
Its location near Covington also means that while the campground itself is rustic, essential services and local attractions in surrounding communities are within a reasonable driving distance. This allows campers the flexibility to resupply or explore nearby towns and natural wonders when desired, adding a practical element to their wilderness retreat. The ease of access, combined with the secluded feel, makes King Lake State Forest Campground a prime choice for Michigan locals looking for both convenience and an authentic taste of the Upper Peninsula wilderness.

King Lake State Forest Campground Reviews
Fantastic campground in the UP of Michigan. There are I believe 6 or 8 total sites and it is first come first serve. I arrived after dark on a Saturday night in mid September and luckily there was one spot available. It is right on King Lake. You drive about 5 miles or so down a one lane dirt road but it’s easily traversed with any vehicle. There is a boat ramp and the spaces are quite large and very private. It is quite primitive but each spot has a picnic table and fire pit. There is a vault toilet bathroom and water pump along with each site having its own trash receptacle. It’s super quiet and peaceful and secluded. 3 of the sites have a lake view but even though mine didn’t it was still a great spot in the woods.
Sep 18, 2023 · Michael “Wolfy” HowesTable, fire ring, large sites. 1, 2, 3 are on the hill, 4 and up are closer or on the water. No attendant, pay the pipe. There is a $9 penalty for out-of-state campers on top of $15 for the site. Shame!!
Sep 13, 2018 · max MillerProbably the prettiest campground I've ever been to, but the park service seemed to be neglecting the garbage cans. Ours was full when we got there and overflowing when we left. The vault toilets were full, too.
Aug 07, 2019 · blamy10Nice small campground with 6 sites. A bit open for my taste but only 3 sites were in use so not a problem. We should have brought kayaks or a canoe.
Oct 18, 2024 · Henry DaviesFound this campground by chance. 6 miles of dirt road to get there. 20 dollars a night. Picnic tables and fire pits at every site. 6 sites. First come. Vault toilets. Rustic.
