Not to hard to find. I parked at the small lot near Lock 38. Walked about 3 miles west and found the cave on the right hand side. There are a few much smaller caves before you get to this one, which are worth exploring. As for the campsite, when I walked through (late Feb) there was still a port-o-potty there and a seasonal water supply. Not an area I would set a larger tent. - Derek Brenneman

Killiansburg Cave Campsite Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For Marylanders with a spirit of adventure and a love for the great outdoors, the Killiansburg Cave Campsite in Sharpsburg offers a distinctive and memorable camping experience. Unlike typical drive-in campgrounds, Killiansburg Cave Campsite embodies a more primitive and secluded approach to nature, making it a perfect spot for those who appreciate tranquility, natural beauty, and a touch of historical exploration. Nestled along the scenic Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Canal Towpath, this campsite provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the riverside environment while being close to significant historical landmarks.

This particular campsite caters primarily to tent campers and those who enjoy backpacking, offering a back-to-basics experience where the focus is on the natural surroundings. It’s a place where the sounds of the river and the rustling leaves replace urban noise, and where the starlit sky provides the ultimate entertainment. With its proximity to the historic Antietam National Battlefield and the allure of nearby caves, Killiansburg Cave Campsite is more than just a place to sleep; it’s a gateway to discovery and a peaceful retreat for Maryland locals seeking an authentic outdoor adventure.

Location and Accessibility

Killiansburg Cave Campsite is strategically located in Sharpsburg, MD 21782, USA, making it an accessible, yet wonderfully secluded, destination for many Maryland residents. Its primary access is via the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath, which means it is not a drive-up campsite. This characteristic is precisely what contributes to its primitive charm and relative quietude.

For those planning a visit, a common approach involves parking at a nearby access point to the C&O Canal Towpath and then hiking or biking to the campsite. One well-known access point is near Lock 38, which is where some visitors choose to park. From Lock 38, the campsite is located approximately three miles west along the towpath. This scenic walk or ride along the historic canal provides a gradual transition into the natural setting, building anticipation for the campsite itself.

The C&O Canal National Historical Park, which encompasses the campsite, is generally open year-round. However, visitors should be aware that towpath conditions can vary with weather, and water levels in the canal can fluctuate. Given its location on the towpath, the campsite is well-suited for those who enjoy hiking or cycling as part of their outdoor experience. While the exact coordinates are not publicly listed in a way that allows for direct GPS navigation to the campsite itself, using Lock 38 or other well-marked access points along the C&O Canal near Sharpsburg as a starting point is the most reliable way to find it. The journey to the campsite becomes part of the adventure, allowing for exploration of the beautiful canal environment.

Services Offered
  • Primitive Tent Camping: Killiansburg Cave Campsite is designed for primitive tent camping, meaning it offers basic amenities for a rustic experience. It is suitable for setting up smaller tents or hammocks.
  • Seasonal Water Supply: Historically, a hand pump providing potable water has been available at or near the campsite. However, it is crucial to note that this water supply can be seasonal and may not always be operational or have its handle present, as indicated by past visitor reviews. Campers should always plan to bring their own sufficient water supply or have a reliable water purification method.
  • Porta-Potty: A portable toilet (port-a-potty) is typically available at the campsite. This provides a basic restroom facility for campers.
  • Designated Campsite Area: The campsite offers a cleared area suitable for pitching tents, often with a view of the water (Potomac River). While a picnic table may sometimes be present, recent reviews suggest they might be missing or limited.
  • Fire Pits (where permitted): While not explicitly stated for every site, primitive campsites along the C&O Canal often have designated fire rings or areas where campfires are permitted, provided fire restrictions are not in place. Campers should always check for current fire bans before lighting a fire.

Given its primitive nature, campers should not expect amenities such as electricity, hot showers, or full-service restrooms. The focus here is on self-sufficiency and enjoying the natural environment with minimal modern conveniences.
