Kellner Campground

Campground ★4.0

Globe, AZ 85501, USA

4.0
First off, this is a fee area, and the road is blocked unless you make a reservation and get the lock code. Making our way out to the campground from the Phoenix area, we found that Russell Road is blocked off. You need to take the alternate route through Globe to get here. Once you're there, it's picturesque and peaceful. When we went, the stream was flowing pretty well, so we made a small stone bridge to get across to the camping areas beyond the picnic area. In spring, fire danger is low, so you can build fires in designated pits at the picnic area and individual camp sites. That said, we could not locate the Kellner canyon trailhead, which appears to be next to the picnic area. The trail along the stream can be tricky, and I put my boots in the stream a couple of times, so be careful and remember to bring extra shoes just in case. It would be nice if more trails were available here. The road to the site has game trails where wildlife passes through. We found a lot of broken bottles but also found some old horse shoes and other old camping remnants from many years gone by. The site has a vault toilet, but no water or trash, so you need to pack it out and leave glass at home. Temps are a little cooler here because the elevation is higher than town. It's very quiet at night, and the sites are well spread out. This campground is a nice respite and worth staying at for a couple days. Enjoy! - Jeff B.

Kellner Campground Introduce

For those in Arizona seeking a unique and secluded camping experience for their group, Kellner Campground offers an exceptional opportunity. Located in the picturesque Pinal Mountains near Globe, this is not your typical individual-site campground. It is a dedicated group site, a secluded haven for families, friends, or organizations who want to enjoy the peacefulness of the Tonto National Forest together. The site’s interesting rock walls and steps, a testament to the Civilian Conservation Corps' work in the 1940s, add a touch of historical charm to the natural beauty of the area.

Kellner Campground is an ideal spot for those who appreciate privacy and a "get away from it all" feeling. It is situated at the end of a gated, three-quarter-mile-long road, which provides a remote feel and a sense of exclusive access. The setting is stunning, with the beautiful Pinal Mountains rising dramatically in the background and a small stream in Kellner Canyon that often flows well, especially in the spring. The higher elevation offers a welcome respite from the intense desert heat, making it a comfortable destination during the warmer months, though it's important to be prepared for cooler temperatures at night.

This campground requires a bit of foresight and preparation. It operates on a reservation-only basis, and campers need to obtain the lock code for the gate in advance. This system, while an extra step, ensures that the site remains private and not overcrowded. It's a place where you can find true quiet at night, surrounded by the sounds of nature. While the campground is known for its peaceful atmosphere, campers must be self-sufficient as there are no services like running water or trash disposal. It’s a classic “pack it in, pack it out” experience that preserves the pristine nature of the site.

Location and Accessibility

Kellner Campground is located south of the city of Globe, Arizona, at the address of Globe, AZ 85501, USA. It is nestled at the base of the Pinal Mountains. For those traveling from the Phoenix area, it is crucial to note that access is via an alternate route through Globe, as Russell Road is often blocked off.

The road to the site is a gravel or dirt road that can have game trails crossing it, so it’s important to drive with caution and keep an eye out for wildlife. The gated entrance, which requires a pre-obtained code, ensures a secure and private setting. While the on-site parking is available, it is noted to be limited, with a capacity for around four to five vehicles and no room for large RVs or trailers to turn around. This is an important consideration for groups with multiple vehicles, as coordination is key. The campground’s elevation of approximately 4,400 feet contributes to its cooler temperatures and peaceful atmosphere.

Services Offered

As a remote group site, Kellner Campground provides a minimalist set of services to maintain its primitive feel.

  • Public Restroom: The campground provides a vault toilet, which is a significant convenience for a primitive site. It is important to remember that there is no running water, so campers should bring their own.

  • Tent Sites: The campground is set up as a large group site with smaller, individual areas within it. This layout is perfect for tent camping, with plenty of room to spread out and find a secluded spot.

  • Picnic Tables and Grills: The site features multiple picnic tables and grills for cooking, as well as a group fire ring. This makes it easy for groups to prepare meals and gather together in the evenings.

  • On-site Parking: Parking is available directly at the campground, although it is limited and can be tricky for larger vehicles. It’s a good idea for groups to carpool if possible to manage the limited space efficiently.

Features / Highlights

Kellner Campground’s charm lies in its unique features that set it apart from typical campgrounds.

  • Peace and Seclusion: The gated access and remote location make this one of the most peaceful and secluded camping spots in the area. It is known for its quiet nights, perfect for stargazing and getting away from the noise of the city.

  • Historic CCC Structures: The rock walls and steps built by the Civilian Conservation Corps are a unique highlight, adding a sense of history and permanence to the natural setting. These structures show the thoughtful design of the site and provide a fascinating backdrop.

  • Riparian Area and Stream: The presence of a stream in Kellner Canyon adds a beautiful natural element to the site. The riparian area, with its large sycamore and white oak trees, provides some shade and a tranquil environment. This is a special feature for a desert location.

  • Good for Kids: Despite the primitive nature, the campground is considered "good for kids." The open spaces, stream, and opportunities for exploring make it an adventurous and safe place for children to play and discover nature.

  • Wildlife Viewing: The road leading to the campground and the surrounding area are known for wildlife. It's a great spot for bird watching and spotting other local animals passing through.

What is Worth Choosing

Kellner Campground is a great choice for those who are seeking a rustic, group-oriented camping experience in Arizona. It is a fantastic option for a private event or a family gathering where you can reserve the entire space for your group's exclusive use. The sense of privacy and the peaceful atmosphere are the main selling points, offering a true escape from the crowded campgrounds that are common during peak season. While the lack of amenities like running water or trash service might be a drawback for some, for the prepared camper, it is a small price to pay for the seclusion and natural beauty.

The historical elements and the picturesque setting with the stream and mountains are what make this place truly special. It's a place that feels like a hidden gem, and the minor inconveniences—such as the limited parking and the "pack it out" rule—contribute to its unspoiled charm. The higher elevation means cooler temperatures and a break from the intense heat, which is a huge bonus in Arizona. It's a place that requires a little extra effort and planning, but the reward is a peaceful, beautiful, and private camping experience that is hard to find elsewhere. If your group is looking for a unique and memorable adventure in a quiet, secluded spot, Kellner Campground is definitely worth considering.
