Johnson's of St. Mary Introduce
For Montanans, or anyone visiting our incredible Big Sky Country, a trip to Glacier National Park is often at the top of the list. And when it comes to finding a place to stay that combines convenience, comfort, and a touch of local charm right at the park's doorstep, Johnson's of St. Mary is a name that often comes up. More than just a campground, this long-standing family business offers a unique blend of hospitality, history, and unparalleled views of one of Montana's most iconic landscapes. As a professional content writer specializing in local business SEO, I'm excited to delve into what makes Johnson's of St. Mary a fantastic choice for your next Montana adventure.
Johnson's of St. Mary has been a fixture in the Glacier National Park area for over 60 years and three generations, embodying authentic Western hospitality. This dedication to service is evident in the positive feedback from visitors, who often highlight the "friendly staff" and "great service." It's not just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent; it's a place where you can feel like a part of Montana history, with "stories behind the restaurant filled with interesting characters" that add to its unique character.
One of the standout features, often lauded by those who've visited, is the on-site restaurant. Described as "easily the best restaurant in the area," it offers "yummy food" and "family-style special of the night and a huckleberry lemonade" that you "will be glad you did!" This convenience of having delicious, homemade meals readily available after a day of exploring Glacier is a significant plus, setting Johnson's apart from many other campgrounds.
Beyond the culinary delights, the campground itself offers a variety of camping experiences. Whether you prefer the comfort of "full hookup" RV sites, a simpler "electric and water" setup, or the traditional feel of "tent sites" nestled in "a thicket of trees" or "a grassy meadow," Johnson's caters to diverse preferences. And, of course, the panoramic views of Glacier National Park, Lower St. Mary Lake, and Upper St. Mary Lake from many of the sites are simply "the most amazing view you'll ever encounter."
Johnson's of St. Mary is strategically located at 21 Red Eagle Rd, Browning, MT 59417, USA. This puts it at the northern edge of St. Mary, up a hill, approximately 0.25 miles from the east entrance to Glacier National Park. Its proximity to the park's entrance is a huge advantage for visitors planning to explore the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road and other East Glacier attractions like Many Glacier.
The campground's elevated position offers breathtaking views that overlook both Upper and Lower St. Mary Lakes, Glacier National Park, and parts of the Blackfeet Reservation. This visual spectacle enhances the overall camping experience, providing a stunning backdrop to your Montana adventure.
Accessibility to Johnson's is generally good, allowing for convenient arrival. While some reviews mention "tight spaces" for larger RVs, suggesting "maneuverability trials" for very big rigs, many find it "doable for most." It's important to note that some RV sites, particularly those on the top of the hill, may not be entirely level, and electrical hookups can be at ground level, requiring some awareness from campers. However, the prime location and the incredible views often outweigh these minor considerations for many visitors. Johnson's also serves as a pickup location for Sun Tours and Red Bus Tours, making it even easier to access guided tours of Glacier National Park without the hassle of driving and parking within the park.

Johnson's of St. Mary Reviews
This is easily the best restaurant in the area. The food came out fast and it was better than we could have hoped for. The stories behind the restaurant are filled with interesting characters and make you feel a part of Montana history. Do not pass up the chance to dive into their family style special of the night and a huckleberry lemonade. You will be glad you did !!!!
Jul 08, 2025 · KatieYummy food! They did try to charge me $300 for a full pie though... A slice of pie at this place is $16, so even if you had 6 slices to rebuild the full circle it doesn't add up... Menu is coated in quirky boomer humor, and cat Skittles is very friendly! Other than the pie pricing it's a solid choice
Jun 26, 2025 · Alex BoushWesley was our waiter and was extremely attentive. We ordered the special: turkey, coleslaw, potatoes and gravy. It also came with fresh bread and a delicious bowl of beef and barley soup. Desserts were ordered and unbelievable!! I got the Huckleberry Ice Cream Cake. Oh my gosh…it was huge!!! And so good!! Nathan, owner and cook, introduced himself to us and made the experience even more fun. We loved their choice of music. He said it was still his mother’s playlist. Just good, clean, easily recognizable songs. Definitely will be back and highly recommend to anyone in the area!!
Jun 08, 2025 · Pat WashburnIf you can picture what a montana restaurant was to look like, Johnson's is it. We loved this place the moment we walked in the front door. We went for dinner and the home cooked food was absolutely delicious. Had peach cobbler for dessert which was out of this world. And to top it off, Lauren our waitress, was fantastic which made our dinner that much more enjoyable. Everything was soo good we're going back again tonight. We just wanted to thank you so much Nathan. Your new friends from Texas, Steve & Anna
Jun 21, 2025 · Steve SawyerReal home cooking, deliciously so. The bison and barley soup had me scraping the bowl for every last drop, and the homemade bread and desserts were excellent.
