Joes Valley Campground

Campground ★4.0

Forest Rd 0137, Orangeville, UT 84537, USA

4.0
The campsites are very nice and they are quite level. The view of the lake from the site we always choose is really beautiful. My only issue is that I wish there were campsites with easier access to the lake so that we don't have to haul our kayaks, canopies, lunches, beach toys, chairs etc each time we want to play on the water. But it's a really nice place to stay. - Karen Christensen

Location and Accessibility: High in the Wasatch Plateau

Joes Valley Campground is located at Forest Rd 0137, Orangeville, UT 84537, USA, at an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet on the Wasatch Plateau. While its address is in Orangeville, the campground itself is nestled about 18 miles from the town, making it a true escape from city life. The drive up the canyon on State Route 29 is a scenic journey that builds anticipation for the adventure ahead. The roads within the campground are paved, and campsites are described as "very nice and... quite level," which is a significant plus for RVs and trailers. The campground is designed with accessibility in mind, featuring a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, ensuring that people of all abilities can enjoy the area. While a review notes the lack of easy access from the campsite directly to the lake for hauling kayaks and other gear, the breathtaking views from the campsites themselves make up for the short trek to the water. The combination of a relatively easy drive to the campground and its secluded high-mountain location provides the best of both worlds for Utah campers.

Services Offered: Practical and Essential Amenities

Joes Valley Campground provides a range of amenities that cater to a variety of camping needs, ensuring a comfortable and convenient stay. These services are practical and well-suited for the remote location, allowing visitors to focus on their outdoor activities. Here are some of the key services you can expect:

  • On-site Parking: Each campsite is equipped with a paved parking spur, making it easy to park your vehicle or RV and set up your camp. This is a great convenience, especially when hauling gear for a longer stay.

  • Tent Sites and Picnic Tables: The campground offers designated tent sites and includes picnic tables and fire pits at each site. This makes it easy for tent campers to set up a comfortable base and enjoy meals outdoors, all while staying organized.

  • Running Water and Public Restrooms: The campground provides running water and public restrooms with vault toilets. One review mentions that there is running water at "three locations around the campground," which is a crucial service. Campers are advised to fill up on water in the town of Orangeville before heading to the campsite, especially in seasons of drought, as this can be a more reliable source.

  • RV Water Hookups: While not all sites may have full hookups, the availability of RV water hookups is a fantastic feature. This allows RV campers to connect to a water source and enjoy a more comfortable stay, without having to rely solely on their internal tanks.

  • Fire Pits: Each site has a fire pit, perfect for cooking meals and gathering around a campfire to share stories. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own firewood, which is a common practice in many state parks and national forests.

Features and Highlights: Nature's Best and Adventure Aplenty

Joes Valley Campground is celebrated for its unique features and recreational highlights. These are the elements that draw visitors in and keep them coming back, as evidenced by the glowing reviews from repeat campers.

  • Stunning Lake Views: One of the most significant highlights is the "beautiful" view of the reservoir from the campsites. Waking up to a serene lake and mountain landscape is a truly unforgettable experience. The campground's location high above the water ensures that many sites offer these breathtaking vistas.

  • Abundant Hiking and Four-Wheeling Trails: The area is a hub for outdoor adventure. Visitors have access to a "large assortment of four wheeling trails," which are part of the expansive Arapeen Off-Highway Vehicle Trail System. For hikers, there are also numerous trails to explore, ranging from easy to difficult, and maps are recommended to navigate the vast area. One review highlighted the beauty of the wildflowers and green landscape, which can be seen on these hikes, particularly after a good water year.

  • Excellent Fishing and Water Sports: Joes Valley Reservoir is known for its good fishing, stocked with cutthroat, rainbow trout, and tiger muskie. Boating, water skiing, and kayaking are also popular on the lake, although a review noted that depending on drought conditions, the lake can be very low and difficult to access for boats. Visitors are encouraged to check water levels before their trip, especially if water activities are their primary goal.

  • Wildlife and Wildflowers: The natural environment is a major draw. Reviews mention the beauty of the wildflowers, which are abundant in the area, particularly after a good winter. The surrounding landscape of juniper, pinyon pine, and aspen trees provides a perfect backdrop for a true nature experience.

  • Good for Kids and Families: With picnic tables, a playground, and kid-friendly hikes, Joes Valley Campground is an excellent choice for families. The open spaces and easy trails make it a safe and engaging environment for children to explore and enjoy the outdoors.
