Jerry Johnson Campground Introduce
For us Idahoans, finding that perfect spot where the wild beauty of our state truly shines, often accompanied by a soothing natural hot spring, is what defines a memorable outdoor escape. Jerry Johnson Campground, nestled along the iconic U.S. Highway 12 in the heart of the Clearwater National Forest near Kooskia, offers exactly that. This rustic USFS campground isn't about luxury; it's about authentic connection to nature, peace, and unparalleled access to one of Idaho's most beloved natural wonders: the Jerry Johnson Hot Springs.
This campground provides a simple yet effective base for exploring an area rich in history, stunning landscapes, and recreational opportunities. It caters to those who appreciate a quiet environment and understand the charm of a less-developed setting. While the campsites themselves might be more open than densely forested, the surrounding wilderness, with its towering trees and the nearby Lochsa River, provides an enveloping sense of nature. It’s a place where the sounds of the highway are often replaced by the murmur of the river and the quiet rustle of the forest.
Whether you're planning a day trip to soak in the geothermal pools, an angling adventure on the Lochsa, or a quiet night under the Idaho stars, Jerry Johnson Campground offers a unique and accessible entry point to a truly remarkable part of our state. It's a testament to the fact that some of the best experiences are found where nature is allowed to truly be itself, providing a tranquil haven for locals seeking to recharge.
Jerry Johnson Campground is conveniently located on U.S. Highway 12, approximately 75 miles east of Kooskia, ID 83539, USA, and about 66 miles southwest of Missoula, MT. This strategic position along the scenic "Northwest Passage" of Highway 12 makes it a highly accessible destination for travelers coming from either Idaho or Montana.
The campground's direct access from Highway 12 means easy arrival for all types of vehicles, including RVs and trailers. The internal roads and site driveways within the campground are paved, contributing to a smooth and comfortable experience. While the campground is situated near the highway, the traffic noise is generally manageable, especially at night, as Highway 12 in this remote stretch isn't as busy as major interstates.
One of the campground's most significant draws is its proximity to the renowned Jerry Johnson Hot Springs. The trailhead for these popular hot springs is a short distance away, typically around 1 to 1.3 miles (roughly between mile markers 150 and 151) from the campground. The hike to the hot springs involves crossing the Lochsa River via a pack bridge and then following a generally well-maintained, relatively flat trail along Warm Springs Creek. This easy access to the hot springs makes the campground an excellent base for a relaxing soak after a day of travel or exploration.
Additionally, the campground's location offers access to:
Lochsa River: The wild and scenic Lochsa River, famous for its whitewater rafting and fishing (salmon, steelhead, and trout), runs across from the campground, offering immediate recreational opportunities.
Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness: The campground serves as an entry point to this vast wilderness area, offering more extensive hiking and backpacking adventures for experienced outdoor enthusiasts.
Nearby Services: For additional supplies or services, Lochsa Lodge by Powell Campground (further east on US Hwy 12) offers amenities like ice, gas, food, and even showers and a payphone, providing convenient support for campers.
Campsites for RVs and Tents: Jerry Johnson Campground features 20 campsites, generally more suited for RVs and smaller tents. Each site includes a paved driveway for easy parking, a picnic table for outdoor dining, and a fire ring with a grill for cooking and campfires.
Potable Water: The campground offers a hand-pump well with clear, fresh potable water, available to campers. This is a crucial amenity for drinking and basic needs, though it's not designed for filling large RV tanks.
Vault Toilets: Clean, well-maintained, and relatively new vault-style outhouses are available throughout the campground, providing basic restroom facilities.
Garbage Services: Garbage disposal is provided via bear-wise dumpsters, emphasizing the importance of proper food and trash storage in this bear country.
Handicap Accessible: The campground is designed to be handicap accessible, ensuring greater inclusivity for all visitors.
Pet-Friendly: Pets are permitted but must be kept on a leash, encouraging responsible pet ownership within the campground.
No RV Dumping Station: Campers should be aware that there is no RV dumping station directly at Jerry Johnson Campground. The nearest dumping station is located at Wilderness Gateway Campground, requiring a short drive.
First-Come, First-Served: Jerry Johnson Campground typically operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are not usually accepted. This requires flexibility, especially during peak seasons.
Fee: A daily fee is charged for using the campsites, with an additional fee for extra vehicles. (Note: Some past information mentioned no fee being collected, but current information generally indicates a fee is in place).
Proximity to Jerry Johnson Hot Springs: This is arguably the biggest highlight. The campground is a convenient base for accessing the famous Jerry Johnson Hot Springs via a scenic 1-1.3 mile hike. These natural geothermal pools offer a unique and relaxing soaking experience, with three different pools to choose from, one often being the hottest.
Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Despite being near a highway, the campground is often described as very quiet and peaceful, especially at night. It's not typically crowded, even in late June, offering a serene escape.
Rustic and Authentic Camping: For those who appreciate a less developed camping experience, Jerry Johnson provides a "good rustic campground" feel. It allows for a more direct connection with the surrounding natural environment.
Access to the Lochsa River: The campground's location across from the Wild and Scenic Lochsa River offers opportunities for fishing for various trout, salmon, and steelhead species, as well as whitewater activities like rafting (though no direct boating facilities at the campground itself).
Trailhead Access: A cool trailhead is located right out of the campground, leading to areas of the Clearwater National Forest and potentially connecting to more extensive backcountry trails, although some trails may not be well-maintained.
Wildlife Viewing: The area is known for its wildlife, including deer, elk, moose, bear, and various bird species, offering opportunities for nature observation (and requiring careful bear safety).
Beautiful Fall Colors: In the fall, the larches and deciduous trees in the area display "great fall colors," making it a picturesque destination for autumn camping.

For us Idahoans, Jerry Johnson Campground truly encapsulates the spirit of our state's wild heart. We appreciate a campground that offers a "good rustic" experience, a quiet escape from the everyday, and unparalleled access to the natural wonders we hold dear. The fact that it's located right off US-12, a major scenic byway, yet still manages to feel serene and often uncrowded, particularly in late June, is a significant draw.
Its primary appeal for locals undoubtedly lies in its close proximity to the renowned Jerry Johnson Hot Springs. Being able to hike directly from your campsite to one of Idaho's most cherished natural geothermal pools is an experience that resonates deeply with our outdoor culture. The presence of "three different pools to choose from," with the "hottest of the three" often being found by the first pool, adds to the allure of this unique natural amenity.
Beyond the hot springs, the campground offers immediate access to the Wild and Scenic Lochsa River, a prime spot for fishing and whitewater activities, catering to our love for angling and river adventures. The thoughtful provisions like picnic tables, fire rings, and "clean, well-maintained pit-toilets" provide the necessary comforts for a genuine camping experience. While the limited tent pads for larger tents might require some planning, the overall spaciousness and quietude make it an ideal setting for RVs and smaller setups.
For Idahoans seeking an authentic, peaceful, and amenity-supported basecamp to explore the Lochsa Corridor, soak in natural hot springs, and immerse themselves in the wild beauty of the Clearwater National Forest, Jerry Johnson Campground is an excellent choice. It offers the perfect blend of accessibility to incredible natural features and the quiet, rustic charm we so often seek in our Idaho adventures.

Jerry Johnson Campground Reviews
A good rustic campground in a fantastic area. It seems more suited to RVs and small tents. Out of all 20 campsites, we only found one that had a tent pad that could accommodate our five-person tent. Cool trailhead right out of the campground; the trail is not well maintained. Very quiet place; went in late June and there were only two other sites occupied.
Jun 29, 2025 · Cole TutinoThere are three different pools to choose from along the trail. It's a busy place at certain times of the day. The first pool was our favorite being that we had it to our self, and it was the hottest of the three.
Oct 02, 2024 · dave SpinnerIt's ok. The views were mehh. We have a good time every time we camp despite where we are. I give this spot only two stars because if you are camping in the summer you are gonna roast in these spots with no trees and shade. Spring camping is good because it's not too hot yet but the ticks are real bad here. We tromped through the woods and didn't get as many ticks as we did just at our camp site. 🤔 Oh well, it is nature, right? 😜 The bathrooms we're clean and toilet paper was filled. 👍
May 18, 2019 · sabrina bayhaIt is a good mid-way location for those wanting to fish the river. Prior to when the grounds were "nuked" (cleared of trees) it was a nice shady area. In mid to late summer, the sun bakes the grounds for much of the day.
Jun 18, 2024 · Jack HutsonIt is a very nice campground, paved back in stes only, all pretty level. In ground fire pits. Gorgeous views of tree covered mountains. Most of the stes were empty, on a Saturday afternoon. Good campground.
