Scenic spot! I was lucky enough to be there when it wasn’t busy. Best for anyone looking for spacious group sites, with plenty of flat ground for tents and/or cars. The sites have restrooms, bear boxes, picnic tables, fire pits, and trash cans. Elevation is about 7500 ft, which makes it a good spot for escaping scorching temps. The current host, Chris, is very welcoming and kind! He and his family patiently shared local knowledge and advice with me. I had such a positive experience so I wanted to pass it on! - Ella Krieger

Jackson Flat Group Campground Introduce

Perched majestically at an elevation of approximately 7,500 feet within the sprawling Angeles National Forest, Jackson Flat Group Campground offers Californians a truly unique and refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle, especially during the warmer months. Described as a "scenic spot" with "the best views and amazing hikes," this campground is a hidden gem for groups seeking spacious sites, cool mountain air, and unparalleled access to breathtaking natural beauty. It's a place where you can truly "escape scorching temps" and immerse yourself in a tranquil environment, far removed from the city's intensity. More than just a collection of campsites, Jackson Flat is a launching pad for adventure, a haven for relaxation, and a canvas for "dazzling sunsets" that paint the sky. With its dedication to accommodating larger parties and providing essential, well-maintained amenities, Jackson Flat Group Campground stands out as an exceptional choice for Californians looking to gather, unwind, and explore the majestic high country of their own backyard.

Jackson Flat Group Campground is strategically located off the Angeles Crest Highway (State Route 2) near Wrightwood, CA 92397, USA. This placement makes it a relatively accessible high-elevation retreat for residents across Southern California, particularly those from the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. To reach the campground, you'll typically take State Highway 2. It's approximately 8 miles west of the town of Wrightwood, CA, and about one mile beyond a locked gate at the Grassy Hollow Visitor Center and picnic area. Access to the campground itself is generally managed, as it is a walk-in group camping facility. While it accommodates "walk-in tent campers only" directly at the sites (about 200-600 yards from parking), visitors can typically drive into the campsites only to unload and load their gear. Vehicles are not permitted to park in the campsites themselves but rather in a centrally located parking area near the campground entrance.

Given its high elevation of approximately 7,500 feet, the drive up Angeles Crest Highway is scenic and winding, offering panoramic views. It's important to note that the campground is available by reservation only and is typically open from late spring to early fall, closing in winter due to snow. Carpooling is recommended due to somewhat limited parking. Despite its secluded feel, Jackson Flat is surprisingly well-connected to major attractions. It's situated next to the beautiful Grassy Hollow Visitor Center, which hosts nature programs during the summer, and offers a spur trail that connects directly to the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. This blend of remote tranquility and convenient access to key natural features makes Jackson Flat an ideal base camp for Southern Californians eager to explore the San Gabriel Mountains.
