Campground ★4.0

Unnamed Road, Free Soil, MI 49411, USA

Edit 9/18/2024:My review was for Jackpine Lake Dispersed Camping on Little Bass Lake in the Upper Peninsula of MI., south of Seney MI. It's showing up as Jackpine Campground in the southern peninsula of MI., east of Lake Michigan.(Jackpine Lake Dispersed Camping) [original post follows]This is part of Michigan's dispersed camping system. Two primitive sites across the lake from each other, each with a picnic table, fire ring, and enclosed primitive pit toilet. The lake is almost totally encircled in pines, and is relatively scenic. But, and for me that cost the side two stars, fishing was terrible. While the lake is pretty to look at, it's a shallow fish pan lake and I fished it hard for several hours with one bite which actually was a horny bluegill not really interested in eating! But if you're not a fisherman you would enjoy it. The peace, quiet, solitude & scenery is great!I I beached my kayak on the beach after fishing all afternoon. The next morning I found deer tracks down the shoreline and walking around the kayak. And, wolf tracks following the deer tracks! Weren't there the night before, didn't see another soul, so it wasn't a dog track it was a wolf! My only regret (other than lousy fishing) was that I did not get serenaded by the wolves at night. - Bruce Conner

This article is crafted for local users who are looking to learn more about this specific spot, offering a clear, engaging, and factual overview to help you plan your next adventure.

It is important to note that there are multiple camping locations in Michigan with a similar name, which can be confusing. The provided information points to a location in Free Soil, Michigan, which is a different location from the well-known Jack Pine Lodge in the Upper Peninsula. The reviews provided specifically pertain to a "Jackpine Lake Dispersed Camping" site in the Upper Peninsula. While the user-provided address is for a different location, the user reviews clearly describe a dispersed, primitive, and secluded experience. Based on this, we will craft the article around the characteristics described in the reviews to provide the most accurate and useful content.

Jack Pine Campground, in this context, refers to a primitive, dispersed camping area, part of a system that allows for a more rustic and quiet experience. It's a place where you can find genuine solitude, away from the crowds of larger, more developed campgrounds. We believe that understanding the true nature of a campsite, whether it's a bustling RV park or a quiet primitive site, is crucial for a successful trip. This guide will help you determine if this type of camping aligns with your expectations, covering its location, services, and key features. Get ready to discover a place where the peace, quiet, and scenery are the main attractions.

Location and Accessibility

Jack Pine Campground is a dispersed camping area located on an Unnamed Road in Free Soil, MI 49411. However, the provided reviews clearly indicate a different location: Jackpine Lake Dispersed Camping, near Little Bass Lake, south of Seney in the Upper Peninsula. We will focus on the characteristics described in the reviews to provide a realistic overview.

As a dispersed camping system site, accessibility to the campsites is a key consideration. The reviews describe a path that is "flat and mostly firm with a thin layer of loose sand on top," with some areas of "deeper sand" that are still "absolutely doable" even with a wagon with regular wheels. This suggests the sites are not directly accessible by a vehicle, but rather require a short hike or walk-in from a nearby parking area. The seclusion of the campsites is a direct result of this walk-in access. The trail network is also easily accessible from the campground, making it a great base for hiking and exploring the surrounding forest.

Services Offered

As a primitive or dispersed camping site, Jack Pine Campground offers a very limited set of services, which is part of its appeal for those seeking a rustic experience.

  • Public Toilet: The sites are equipped with an "enclosed primitive pit toilet." A review noted that there were two primitive sites, each with a picnic table, fire ring, and an enclosed pit toilet. This is a crucial amenity for primitive camping, providing a basic but essential facility.

It is important for campers to be aware that a previous visitor noted they had to go back to the main campground for water, even though a reservation said water would be available. This highlights the importance of being self-sufficient and not relying on on-site water sources.

Features / Highlights

The true highlights of Jack Pine Campground are its natural features and the sense of peace it provides.

  • Secluded and Peaceful Sites: The campsites are described as "secluded" and "kind of close together" but with a feel of "peace, quiet, solitude & scenery." This suggests that the sites are positioned to offer a sense of privacy while still being part of a larger, small campground. The secluded atmosphere is a major draw for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle.
  • Scenic Surroundings: The lake is described as "almost totally encircled in pines" and "relatively scenic." A review mentioned watching the sunset at the beach, which was a favorite part of the trip. The beautiful natural environment is a key feature of this location.
  • Unique Wildlife Encounters: One of the most exciting features mentioned in a review was the discovery of both deer and wolf tracks near the campsite. This underscores the truly wild and untamed nature of the area, offering a unique opportunity for an authentic wildlife experience.
  • Access to Trail Network: The campground provides easy access to a nearby "entire trail network," which is a significant feature for hikers and explorers. This makes it an excellent base camp for a multi-day hiking trip.
  • Firewood Delivery: One review mentioned that firewood delivery was a "huge perk," which is a great convenience for primitive camping, where finding dry wood can be a challenge.
  • Dispersed Camping System: This campground is part of Michigan's dispersed camping system. This means it offers a designated but rustic camping experience, providing a balance between a truly wild "pack-in, pack-out" trip and a traditional, developed campground.

Contact Information

As a primitive dispersed camping site, there is no direct contact phone number for a camp host or manager at this specific location. The address is listed as Unnamed Road, Free Soil, MI 49411, USA. However, since the reviews reference a site in the Upper Peninsula, it is highly likely that this is managed by the USDA Forest Service or a similar public land management agency. For information, it is best to contact the appropriate regional office of the Huron-Manistee National Forests to confirm details and policies.

What is worth choosing

Choosing Jack Pine Campground is a decision to prioritize peace, seclusion, and a genuine connection with nature. For those of us in Michigan who have a deep appreciation for the outdoors, this type of camping offers a truly authentic experience. The most compelling reason to choose this spot is its quiet solitude. Unlike busy RV parks or developed campgrounds, this location offers an environment where you can truly relax and enjoy the sounds of the forest and the lake. The beautiful scenery, including the pine-encircled lake and sandy path to the campsite, makes for a picturesque setting.

The primitive nature of the site, with a basic pit toilet and no running water, means you must be prepared and self-sufficient. For many campers, this is the very essence of a rewarding trip—relying on your skills and gear to have a great time. The presence of wildlife, including the exciting possibility of seeing wolf tracks, adds an element of raw adventure that you simply won't find in a more manicured environment. Additionally, its suitability for a short walk-in trip makes it a great option for those who want a secluded experience without an arduous, multi-mile hike. In conclusion, if you're a camper who values quiet, appreciates a more rustic setting, and is ready for a real outdoor adventure, Jack Pine Campground is a choice that offers a refreshing escape and a chance to truly connect with Michigan's wild side.
