Iris Meadow Campground is majestically located on Rock Creek Rd, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546, USA. This address places it squarely within the renowned Eastern Sierra region, an area celebrated for its dramatic mountain peaks, alpine lakes, and verdant forests. For Californians, especially those from Southern or Central California, Mammoth Lakes is a beloved destination, and Iris Meadow Campground offers a superb base from which to explore its myriad attractions.
The campground's direct access to Rock Creek and its close proximity to Rock Creek Lake are significant draws. These natural water features provide excellent opportunities for fishing, photography, and simply enjoying the tranquil sounds of flowing water. However, prospective visitors should be aware of the seasonal nature of this high-elevation campground. Reviews indicate that it can be subject to closures due to winter storm damage. Therefore, it is crucial to check the operating status and road conditions before planning your trip, especially outside of peak summer months. While not explicitly mentioned, access roads to such campgrounds in the Eastern Sierra are typically paved but can become steep and winding as you gain elevation, requiring careful driving. The road leading to Rock Creek area is generally well-maintained during open seasons, but being prepared for mountain driving conditions is always recommended.
For those chasing the famous California fall colors, Iris Meadow Campground is ideally situated. Late September through early October is specifically highlighted as a prime time to witness the breathtaking transformation of the aspen trees around the meadow, offering a spectacular visual display that draws photographers and nature lovers alike. This seasonal beauty adds another layer of appeal to its already stunning location.
Primitive Camping Experience: Iris Meadow Campground is characterized as a "primitive camping" site. This means it offers a back-to-basics outdoor experience, focusing on natural immersion rather than extensive amenities.
No RV Hookups: Importantly, for those traveling with recreational vehicles, the campground explicitly states "no hookups for RV's." Campers should be fully self-contained or prepared for boondocking, managing their own water, power, and waste.
Access to Rock Creek: Campers have direct access to Rock Creek, making it convenient for fishing enthusiasts to enjoy the pristine waters right from their campsite or nearby areas.
Proximity to Rock Creek Lake: While not directly on the lake, the close proximity allows for easy access to Rock Creek Lake, expanding recreational opportunities for fishing, boating (if permitted), and lakeside relaxation.
Scenery as an Amenity: The stunning natural scenery, including the surrounding aspens and meadows, serves as a primary "amenity," offering unparalleled beauty and photographic opportunities.
Basic Facilities (Likely): While not explicitly detailed, primitive campgrounds typically offer basic facilities such as vault toilets and perhaps bear boxes for food storage. Visitors should come prepared with their own water and be ready for minimal conveniences.
Spectacular Fall Colors: One of the absolute standout features of Iris Meadow Campground is its incredible display of fall colors, particularly in late September and early October. The abundance of aspen trees around the meadow transforms into brilliant hues of gold and orange, creating a truly unforgettable visual spectacle.
Access to Pristine Rock Creek Fishing: For anglers, the opportunity to fish directly in Rock Creek, which runs through or adjacent to the campground, is a major highlight. The creek is known for its excellent fishing conditions and clear, cold waters.
Proximity to Rock Creek Lake: Beyond the creek, the nearby Rock Creek Lake provides additional recreational possibilities, from more fishing opportunities to simply enjoying the serene beauty of an alpine lake setting.
Tranquil and Less Crowded (Off-Peak): During the fall season, the campground is noted for being "not too busy," offering a more peaceful and less crowded experience compared to peak summer months. This allows for a deeper connection with nature and more solitude.
Authentic Primitive Camping: For those who prefer a genuine outdoor experience without the distractions of modern conveniences, the primitive nature of Iris Meadow Campground is a significant draw. It encourages self-reliance and a true immersion in the wilderness.
Stunning Natural Scenery: The overall natural beauty of the area, with its meadows, aspens, and proximity to the Sierra Nevada mountains, is a constant highlight, offering endless opportunities for photography and quiet contemplation.

Iris Meadow Campground Reviews
Beautiful Fall colors late September/early October. Not too busy this time of year. Lots of Aspen around the meadow.
Oct 09, 2024 · Ted BuckleyCampground was closed due to Winter storm damage. I fished Rock Creek through this Campground and it looks great. This is primitive camping - no hook ups for RV's, but the scenery and access to Rock Creek and Rock Creek Lake make up for it.
Oct 14, 2023 · Steve AlbanoCampgroud is nice and right next to river, but the host was very passive aggressive. He threaten to call the police if we didn't move our tent away from the creek. He cited some rule about needing to be a hundred ft away from the creek. This was impossible because our entire site was within 100 ft. I think he didn't like us and wanted his fishing spot back. Too much drama. If you don't want people to camp there put up a sign. Stay away from this place and their random rule enforcement.
Aug 28, 2020 · erick pfaffWe were there just a short time. So could only enjoy the view and the river flows!
Jul 02, 2023 · Crystal Pharma (Sreymom)The campground was beautiful. There's a wonderful Creek that runs through it and the fall colors were amazing in October.
