Indian Creek Campground is beautifully situated at 1367 Bunches Creek Rd, Cherokee, NC 28719, USA. Its location is a significant highlight, described as being "up in the mountains and a little remote," which is precisely what many campers are looking for to achieve a true escape. Despite this secluded feel, the campground remains highly accessible for North Carolinians, making it a viable option for both spontaneous weekend trips and planned longer vacations.
Nestled on the Cherokee Indian Reservation at the southern edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the campground boasts a naturally beautiful and heavily wooded setting, spanning 88 acres between three mountain tops. This geographical placement ensures a serene and quiet atmosphere, far removed from the noise and congestion of urban areas. For those traveling from across North Carolina, Cherokee serves as a primary gateway town to this stunning region.
While some visitors note its "remote" feel, the campground's official website provides detailed directions, advising guests to follow instructions in confirmation emails "to arrive there fast and safely via the correct road." This suggests that while it might be off the main thoroughfare, the access is well-managed. It's approximately 9.5 miles from Cherokee, just off Big Cove Road, then a right turn onto Bunches Creek Road for about 1.5 miles. This relatively short final leg on a smaller road leads to the secluded paradise.
For those with RVs, it's worth noting that while the campground accommodates them, some previous feedback from other travelers (not directly in the provided reviews, but generally relevant for the area) suggested awareness of winding mountain roads. However, the campground does offer various site types, including full hook-up sites for RVs, indicating it is prepared for such vehicles. The overall accessibility allows North Carolinians to easily reach a truly peaceful and private camping experience without venturing too far into extreme wilderness. Its proximity to Cherokee also means guests have convenient access to local attractions, cultural sites, and necessary supplies within a reasonable drive.
- Diverse Campsite Options: The campground features 74 sites, offering a variety of choices including primitive tent sites, creek-side sites suitable for tents, pop-ups, or small RVs, and full hook-up sites (water, 30 amp electric, sewer, cable) for larger RVs.
- Cabin Rentals: In addition to campsites, Indian Creek Campground also offers a variety of cabins that sleep 2-8 people, with four cabins being pet-friendly.
- Clean Restrooms with Hot Showers: Highly praised by visitors, the campground provides very clean restrooms with hot showers available, ensuring comfort after a day of outdoor activities.
- Laundry Room: A convenient laundry room is available on-site for campers to wash their clothes.
- Dishwashing Sinks: Dedicated sinks are provided for washing dishes, offering a more hygienic and convenient option than washing at individual campsites.
- Camp Store: A "cool little camp store" is on premises, well-stocked with "all of your forgotten necessities, and more," including firewood and other camping essentials.
- Stocked Trout Stream: Bunches Creek, which runs through or adjacent to the campground, is a stocked trout stream, providing excellent fishing opportunities directly at the campsite. The stream is stocked by the tribe's Fisheries and Wildlife Management Program.
- Playground: A playground is available for children, making the campground family-oriented.
- Dump Station: A sanitary dump station is available for RVs.
- Wi-Fi Hotspot: A Wi-Fi hotspot is available for internet access, though connectivity might be spotty or slow outside the main pavilion area, and cell service (especially AT&T) may be limited.
- Scheduled Activities: The campground sometimes offers scheduled activities for guests.
- Exceptional Trout Fishing: The primary highlight is the unparalleled trout fishing in Bunches Creek, which is frequently stocked by the tribe. Campers can literally catch "big trout" within feet of their campsite, making it a dream destination for anglers.
- Private and Secluded Sites: Reviewers consistently praise the "nice private camping spots" and the overall "secluded, quiet" atmosphere, ensuring a peaceful and relaxing experience. Some sites are lush with greenery and well-maintained for privacy.
- Creekside Camping: Many beautiful sites are located "right by the creek," allowing campers to fall asleep to the soothing sounds of running water.
- Outstanding Cleanliness: The campground is noted for being "very clean and well kept," with "sparkling clean bathrooms" and a "cleanest I have found" bathhouse, a crucial factor for a comfortable stay.
- Friendly and Forthcoming Staff: The staff is consistently described as "extremely friendly and forthcoming," "amazing," and "very helpful," contributing to a welcoming and pleasant environment.
- Family-Oriented Atmosphere: With a playground and family-friendly amenities, the campground is ideal for family trips.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Very clean and well kept. Nice private camping spots. Trout stocking at Bunches Creek is happening. Primary reason for trip was to put my daughter on some big trout. Stock truck pulled up right next to us on our last day and put 50+ trout right at the campsite. Made for the perfect trip. Daughter caught a 16 1/2” trout within 20ft of campsite. Highly recommend this campground for the privacy and access to stocked streams.
June 21 · Rhett SmithWe loved this campground! It's up in the mountains and a little remote, but that's just what we've been looking for. We are tent campers and had a beautiful site right by the creek, and everything was so peaceful, relaxing, and beautiful! The staff was extremely friendly and forthcoming, there was a laundry room and sinks to wash the dishes in, not to forget the cool little camp store. We travelled from Germany to see the Smokies - and this was the perfect place to come back to after a hike in this beautiful nature... Hope to visit again one day!Oh, and to arrive there fast and safely via the correct road just follow their instructions on the confirmation E-mail you'll receive ...
July 01 · MalinThis is our 5th summer here for our family vacation. We tent camp and get the same site each year. Excellent service provided for campsite necessities....wood, ice, and store on site for small items. The campsite is more woods and remote, just the way we like it. Some sites like ours have a nice stream behind it. Excellent fishing. Highly recommend. Book in advance online.
June 27 · Janine MaulucciBy far the best campground we’ve ever been to. Staff is great, sites are great and amenities are fantastic. Bathrooms are always clean, sites are very well maintained and the store pricing is great! We had site 64 next to the creek and absolutely loved it. The sound of the creek makes it very calming and also easier to fall asleep. If you don’t mind an hour drive you can visit gatlinburg and pigeon forge while also seeing the national park! Cherokee is also not far away. We will be returning each year if we can!
June 05 · Isabelle MarkhamWe were first time campers at Indian Creek Campground and absolutely loved it! We will definitely be back. The drive from town in Cherokee is beautiful and follows the river winding through the mountains. The campground is so nice and quiet. We had site 13 right on the river. The bathhouses are sparkling clean! We can’t wait to come back.
