Hueco Rock Ranch - American Alpine Club Introduce
For Texans and global travelers seeking the ultimate bouldering experience, the Hueco Rock Ranch, proudly operated by the American Alpine Club (AAC), stands as the iconic basecamp for all adventures at Hueco Tanks State Park. Located just a short drive from the park entrance outside of El Paso, this campground is much more than a place to pitch a tent—it is a cultural hub and a vital piece of the Hueco Tanks climbing community’s history.
The Ranch was established specifically to provide affordable and convenient lodging options for climbers visiting the world-class bouldering mecca that is Hueco Tanks. While it is certainly set up with the "serious climber" in mind, its welcoming atmosphere, great facilities, and comfortable amenities ensure that all types of adventurers, including hikers, birders, and families, find it accommodating and enjoyable. It serves as an essential alternative to the often fully-booked, limited campsites inside the State Park itself.
Reviews consistently highlight the value of the communal areas, particularly "The Barn," where travelers gather to cook, socialize, and rest out of the harsh desert elements. This strong sense of community is a hallmark of the AAC’s mission. Visitors can secure semi-primitive camping spots, or, depending on availability, opt for rooms inside the main house or communal bunkhouse options, offering a range of comfort levels. Staff members are often praised for being helpful, making the entire experience positive and memorable.
---
The Hueco Rock Ranch is a seasonal operation, typically opening during the prime climbing season, which spans from approximately November through March. This timing aligns perfectly with the milder West Texas winter, which offers the best conditions for climbing and outdoor activities in the Chihuahuan Desert.
---
The location of the Hueco Rock Ranch is one of its primary advantages for park visitors. Situated at 17498 Bettina Ave, El Paso, TX 79938, USA, it is just a swift 5-minute drive from the entrance to Hueco Tanks State Park. This close proximity means less time commuting and more time bouldering, hiking, or exploring the park's ancient rock art.
Although remote enough to offer expansive, dark skies ideal for stargazing, the Ranch is easily reached from El Paso. Visitors traveling to this world-renowned destination generally find that renting a vehicle at the El Paso International Airport (ELP) is highly recommended, as a personal vehicle is necessary for daily trips to the park and for running errands for supplies. While the nearest major city conveniences are a drive away, the on-site community amenities minimize the need for frequent trips.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We car camped here for $10 per person, and it’s worth it because you have the communal area (the barn) where you get to meet cool people and cook on a stove and just have a good rest from the sun/wind. We didn’t stay in the rooms, but I’d say they’re a little overpriced, but that building has an even nicer communal area. Location next to Hueco Tanks (5 minutes) is perfect. Had an AMAZING time.. the staff are the best.
March 17 · Lala & Eric GomezWe tent camped here for a couple of nights while climbing at Hueco Tanks. This campground is definitely setup for serious climbers, which we are not, but we found it quite accommodating regardless. The price is great and the camping area is open and quiet (unlike some of the other climber camping spots outside Hueco where you literally pitch your tent in the parking lot). The community barn has hot showers, open seating areas, and a kitchen for all to use. If you can’t get a spot inside Hueco or just don’t want to deal with it, this is a good alternative.
January 01 · Jamie ConlanPerfect place to stay while climbing Hueco. Probably not worth the price if not an Alpine Club member, best deal by far across competitors (vcrux or Gleatherland) for tent camping if you are a member.
February 17 · UnJin LeeLoved my stay, management put on good vibes and the facility was the best in the hueco valley!
January 12 · Landon WhitleyGreat time at the Rock Ranch. Alè and Landon were amazing hosts!
