Hovey Lake Campground

Munising, MI 49862, USA

4.0
Free with 4 sites total, there is a fork once you pull in; one smaller site to the left and 3 larger sites to the right. The road to the right has a loop at the end by the vault toilets. Do not attempt to take anything larger than about 26-28 feet and definitely not suitable for any length 5th wheels or motorhomes due to low hanging branches! We brought a 24 foot low height travel trailer and were fine but I could see a 30 foot long trailer and/or anything taller than 10 feet having issues! ORVs are allowed to come in and out at the campground which is rarity in the National Forest system. If this campground is full, there are 3 more free sites available about 1/2 mile further south down the road, turn in where large “Oakwood Trails” sign is and keep right at the fork, you’ll find 3 Equestrian camping sites on your right hand side with a unisex vault toilet as well. The road into these sites is tight but can make do in a pinch for a free place for the night - BM JS

Hovey Lake Campground Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For Michigan residents, particularly those in the Upper Peninsula and across the state looking for an authentic and budget-friendly outdoor experience, Hovey Lake Campground in Munising stands out as a hidden gem within the Hiawatha National Forest. This unique campground offers a serene escape, providing a no-fee camping opportunity that is highly valued by locals. With its emphasis on a quiet, isolated, and family-type atmosphere, Hovey Lake Campground is the perfect spot for those who truly want to unplug and immerse themselves in Michigan’s natural beauty without the usual camping fees.

What makes Hovey Lake Campground particularly appealing is its rustic charm combined with essential amenities. It's a place where simplicity reigns, allowing the stunning natural surroundings to be the main attraction. The campground is situated on the east side of Hovey Lake, offering a picturesque backdrop for activities like canoeing, bird watching, and simply enjoying the tranquility of nature. Despite its "free" status, visitors consistently commend its cleanliness and peaceful ambiance, making it a popular choice among those in the know. It’s an ideal destination for those who appreciate primitive camping with just enough comfort to make their stay enjoyable and memorable, truly embodying the spirit of Michigan's vast wilderness.

Location and Accessibility

Hovey Lake Campground is situated in Munising, MI 49862, USA, deep within the scenic expanse of the Hiawatha National Forest. While a specific street address isn't always listed for these more rustic campgrounds, it is accessible via Forest Route 2367, near Wetmore. From the intersection of M-28 and M-94, you drive southwest on M-94 for 6.4 miles to Forest Road 2254. Turn left (south) and drive 4 miles southeast on FR 2254 to Forest Road 2473. Turn right (south) on 2473 and drive 0.5 mile to FR 2367 where you turn right (west) and continue to the campsites. This placement provides a wonderfully isolated and quiet setting, characteristic of the pristine natural areas of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

For Michigan residents, particularly those in the Upper Peninsula, its location offers a fantastic opportunity for a local wilderness retreat. While it's off the main roads, the directions provided by the National Forest Service make it findable for those willing to venture a bit. However, it’s crucial to note that the access roads to the campground and within the sites themselves can be tight and have low-hanging branches. This makes it challenging, and often unsuitable, for larger RVs or fifth-wheel trailers (anything over approximately 26-28 feet or taller than 10 feet). This detail is vital for planning, ensuring that only appropriate vehicles attempt the journey. Despite this, its accessibility for smaller trailers, pop-ups, and tents means that a serene, free camping experience is well within reach for many Michiganders.
