The longevity of its appeal is also a testament to its quality; one reviewer noted that it's "still as perfect as it was then" after a visit back in 2002. This consistency in providing a high-quality, natural camping environment makes Home Gulch a reliable choice for creating lasting memories with family and friends. It truly is one of the favorite campgrounds in the entire Augusta/Choteau area, offering a quintessential Montana outdoor experience.
Home Gulch Campground is located in Choteau, MT 59422, USA, situated along the North Fork of the Sun River. This strategic placement within the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, near the majestic Rocky Mountain Front, provides campers with immediate access to some of Montana's most iconic landscapes. The campground sits at an elevation of approximately 4,580 feet, nestled between two towering cliffs, offering incredible scenic vistas right from your campsite.
Accessibility to Home Gulch Campground is relatively straightforward, though it involves some dirt roads, which are noted to be "well maintained." From Augusta, Montana (approximately 20 miles from the campground, and the closest town with a store), you would take Manix Street west for about 4 miles, then continue west for approximately 17 miles on Forest Road 108. This route transitions from paved to dirt, but the good maintenance ensures it's navigable for most vehicles, including RVs up to 35 feet in length.
The "mostly dirt road" aspect contributes to the secluded feel of the campground, ensuring that while it's accessible, it maintains a sense of being truly "away from it all." This balance makes it appealing to those who desire a wilderness experience without venturing into overly rugged or remote terrain. The proximity to Augusta means that while you're enjoying the tranquility of nature, essential supplies are just a short drive away.
The location also boasts proximity to numerous trails and prime fishing spots, making it an excellent base camp for exploring the surrounding natural wonders. The Sun Canyon Lodge, a local favorite, is "just up the road," offering a convenient option for a meal or drink outside of camp. This combination of natural seclusion and nearby conveniences makes Home Gulch Campground a highly practical and enjoyable destination for Montana locals.

Home Gulch Campground Reviews
This place was exceptional. The views were stunning, and not a lot of people stayed the week I did. The campground is only 10 dollars a night. There are two bathrooms and two water pumps. Very close to trails, fishing, and more. The closest store is about 20 miles in Augusta Mt. It's mostly dirt road, but we'll maintained.
Sep 11, 2024 · StartLivingprobably one of my favorite campgrounds in the Augusta/Choteau area. water available on site, clean restrooms, and amazing views. I spent a couple weeks here back in 2002, and the place is still as perfect as it was then. And the Sun Canyon Lodge is just up the road with great food and drink! You can't go wrong with this campground.
Aug 12, 2017 · Andrew YuhasNice area. $10 per night. Most all the campsites were overgrown with weeds and grass...the forest service needs to invest in a weed wacker! We stayed in the free area just before the official campground, not wooded very well and only about 3 or 4 sites worth camping at. Horribly windy on this trip. Great view of the river/reservoir.
