Holy Ghost Campground is nestled in the picturesque area of Tererro, NM 87573, USA. This location places it within a truly scenic and relatively secluded part of New Mexico, offering an authentic wilderness experience. However, its accessibility is a key point for potential visitors, and understanding it beforehand is crucial for a smooth journey.
The journey to Holy Ghost Campground is famously described as involving a "very skinny, dirt road that's not too friendly on oversized vehicles." One reviewer vividly articulated the experience, stating that with a "Dodge Ram with a camper and a trailer in tow, and it was okay, but I believe the reason they call it 'Holy Ghost' campground is because you are praying down that entire 3-mile road that there is no oncoming traffic. Then someone needs to back up." This highlights the importance of vehicle size and driver awareness, especially for those in larger RVs or towing trailers.
Despite the challenging final stretch of road, the consensus among those who make the journey is that "once you are there, I think it's one of the very best campgrounds in the state." This speaks volumes about the reward awaiting those who navigate the access road successfully. For New Mexico locals, this means being prepared for a rustic, unpaved road that demands careful driving and patience, particularly during peak seasons when traffic might be higher.
It's advisable to check current road conditions, especially after heavy rains, as dirt roads can become more challenging. While the road might be a deterrent for some, for many New Mexicans, it's a small price to pay for the incredible natural beauty and tranquility that Holy Ghost Campground offers. Planning your arrival during daylight hours is also recommended to better navigate the narrow sections of the road.
The remoteness contributes to the campground's appeal, ensuring a truly quiet and undeveloped setting, far from the noise and light pollution of urban areas. This makes it an ideal destination for those seeking genuine solitude and immersion in nature, a hallmark of many cherished New Mexico outdoor experiences.
Holy Ghost Campground, while offering a primitive and immersive outdoor experience, does provide essential services to ensure a comfortable stay. These services focus on facilitating a rustic camping adventure, appealing to those who appreciate a less developed environment.
Spacious Campsites: The campground offers a "good amount of space per campsite." This generous spacing contributes to privacy and allows campers ample room to set up their tents, vehicles, and outdoor living areas comfortably, without feeling crowded by neighboring sites.
Picnic Table at Every Site: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, providing a convenient and clean surface for meal preparation, dining, or simply gathering. This amenity enhances the functionality of each site, making outdoor dining more enjoyable.
Fire Ring at Every Site: A fire ring is provided at every campsite. This essential feature allows campers to build and contain campfires safely, perfect for cooking, warmth, and creating a traditional camping ambiance. It's crucial for campers to be aware of and adhere to any current fire restrictions, which are common in New Mexico's dry climate.
Creek Access for East Side Sites: All sites on the east side of the campground have direct access to the creek that runs alongside. This is a significant amenity for many, providing not only scenic beauty and the soothing sound of running water but also opportunities for water-based activities like fishing (with appropriate licenses) or simply enjoying the riparian environment.
Undeveloped Sites (No Cement Slabs): As a primitive campground, it's noted that "it's not an overly developed campground, so the sites are pretty level, but it's not like you have a cement slab to park on." This means campers should expect dirt or gravel surfaces for parking and tent setup, aligning with a more natural and rustic camping experience.

The soothing sound of running water is a constant companion, enhancing the peaceful atmosphere and offering opportunities for fishing (where permitted) and simply enjoying the riparian habitat.
Extensive Hiking Paths: For those who love to explore, there are "lots of paths to explore though the woods." This network of trails invites campers to venture deeper into the surrounding forest, offering varying levels of difficulty and endless opportunities for discovery and exercise.

Aug 19, 2024 · Rhianna PhelpsBeautiful and quiet campground. The campground has a long winding road with tent and camper sites spread out on both sides. The river is right next to the sights so you can hear it running at all times. The bathrooms are big and there are alot of recycle/garbage bins around. Views are beautiful and the campground was peaceful.
Jun 11, 2024 · Casey RiebenBeautiful campground. The 3 mile road leading to it is unfortunately riddled with potholes, some worse than others, really needs some work.We stayed at campsite #2, there was a skunk that came out both nights we were there.
