Hocking Hills Gem Mine Introduce
For Ohioans exploring the breathtaking beauty of the Hocking Hills region, the experience often extends beyond hiking trails and stunning waterfalls. Many visitors seek out unique activities that add an extra layer of fun and discovery to their trip. Hocking Hills Gem Mine, located within the Hocking Hills KOA Holiday campground in Logan, Ohio, offers just such an adventure. While primarily an attraction rather than a standalone campground, its integration within a popular camping destination makes it a highly accessible and engaging activity for both campers and day visitors alike. This article will provide a detailed overview of the Hocking Hills Gem Mine, highlighting its offerings and why it's a fantastic addition to any Hocking Hills itinerary for local Ohio users.
The Hocking Hills area is a natural playground, and activities like gem mining complement the region's outdoor spirit by offering a hands-on, interactive experience. Hocking Hills Gem Mine capitalizes on the allure of discovery, allowing participants of all ages to unearth their own treasures. Customer reviews highlight the engaging nature of the activity and the friendly staff. One reviewer noted, "The kids and I loved this place. We only mined for gems, but know there is so much more! The staff were all patient, courteous and hilarious. The geode cracking machine was really cool, too! I'd go back just to play with that & crank open some geodes!" Another acknowledged the cost versus quantity, stating, "You are definitely only paying for the experience of 'mining' the crystals. If you are there for just the fun then I suggest only buying a smaller bucket." This feedback underscores that the true value of Hocking Hills Gem Mine lies in the joyous process of discovery and the memorable moments created, making it a must-try for families and crystal enthusiasts alike.
Hocking Hills Gem Mine is conveniently located at 29150 Pattor Rd, Logan, OH 43138, USA. This address places it directly within the Hocking Hills KOA Holiday campground, making it an incredibly accessible attraction for those staying at the KOA and a short drive for anyone visiting the broader Hocking Hills region. Logan, Ohio, serves as the main hub for the Hocking Hills area, providing all necessary amenities and serving as a gateway to the region's famous natural landmarks.
The accessibility of Hocking Hills Gem Mine is a significant advantage. It is situated just 3 miles from Old Man's Cave, one of Hocking Hills State Park's most iconic and frequently visited attractions. Other major park locations, such as Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, Rock House, Conkle's Hollow, and Cantwell Cliffs, are all within a 12-mile radius of the KOA campground. This means visitors can easily spend their morning hiking through stunning gorges and past majestic waterfalls, and then head to the Gem Mine for a fun, interactive activity in the afternoon.
The road infrastructure around Logan and the Hocking Hills is well-developed, with State Route 33 and State Route 664 providing straightforward routes to the area. From SR 33, visitors can take SR 664 south for about 6.5 miles, then turn left on Pattor Road for 0.2 miles to reach the KOA and the Gem Mine. From SR 56, take SR 664 north for 8.5 miles, then turn right on Pattor Road for 0.2 miles. While personal vehicles are recommended for navigating the Hocking Hills region due to the dispersed nature of attractions, the convenience of having an activity like the Gem Mine located directly within a major campground makes it a hassle-free addition to any itinerary. Its central position makes it an ideal stop for families and groups looking for engaging entertainment amidst their outdoor adventures.
Hocking Hills Gem Mine primarily offers recreational activities focused on gem and gold discovery. Its services include:
- Gem Mining: Visitors purchase buckets of "mining rough" (sand and gravel mixed with various gemstones) and use a water sluice to wash away the dirt and reveal their treasures. Different sizes and types of buckets are available, potentially containing a variety of beautiful gemstones and crystals.
- Gold Panning: Offers the experience of panning for genuine placer gold, providing the thrill of finding real gold flakes.
- Geode Cracking: Features a geode cracking machine, allowing visitors to crack open geodes and discover the crystals inside (additional cost for geodes).
- Souvenir Shop: A shop on-site (likely part of the Hocking Hills KOA Holiday camp store) where visitors can purchase mining buckets, take-home kits for gold and gemstones, other geological souvenirs, and perhaps even fudge or snacks.
- Educational Aspect: Provides a hands-on way to learn about different minerals and the process of mining.
It is important to note that Hocking Hills Gem Mine is an activity offered at the Hocking Hills KOA Holiday. - Proximity to Hocking Hills State Park: Ideal for combining with visits to nearby natural attractions like Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave, and Cedar Falls.
- Open to the Public: Accessible to anyone visiting the Hocking Hills area, not just registered campers at the KOA.

Hocking Hills Gem Mine Reviews
This review is based off of the quality of the mining bucket- not the shop itself or customer service there, which was great (which is why it’s 2 stars instead of 1) but we purchased the “motherlode” bucket, at $60. As someone with crystal knowledge this was quite sad for what was advertised being in the bucket/ cost vs quantity and quality of what was actually in the bucket. You are definitely only paying for the experience of “mining” the crystals. If you are there for just the fun then I suggest only buying a smaller bucket.
May 06, 2025 · Jessica SedgemanThe kids and I loved this place. We only mined for gems, but know there is so much more! The staff were all patient, courteous and hilarious. The geode cracking machine was really cool, too! I'd go back just to play with that & crank open some geodes! The statues got me-but it added to the entire experience positively. The kids love making fun of me being afraid of overly sized dolls 😂See pics!

Apr 13, 2024 · lizzi PattonWe did the $35 gem bucket. We expected to find a couple of stones, but there were actually a ton of them. It was definitely worth the money for the experience and the gems for souvenirs. They also have a gift shop with really interesting things made of gemstones.
