Hemlock Lake Campground is conveniently located at 50821 Maple Rd, Marcellus, MI 49067, USA. This address places it within the serene and picturesque landscape of Southwest Michigan, a region dotted with numerous lakes and lush forests. For Michigan residents, reaching Marcellus is generally a straightforward drive from various parts of the state, including nearby cities like Kalamazoo (approximately 31 minutes), Niles (around 36 minutes), and even Battle Creek (about 48 minutes). This accessibility makes it a practical choice for weekend getaways or longer camping trips without requiring extensive travel.
The campground covers the entire south end of Hemlock Lake, a spring-fed lake known for its impressive depths (reaching up to 100 feet) and good fishing. This direct lake frontage is a significant advantage, providing easy access to water-based activities. The clear address ensures ease of navigation, allowing you to settle in quickly and begin enjoying your outdoor retreat.
Hemlock Lake Campground offers a range of services designed to provide a comfortable outdoor experience for both traditional campers and those seeking a bit more convenience:
- Campsites: The campground features 77 sites, accommodating both RVs and tents. Many sites are equipped with water and electric hookups. There are also lakefront sites available, often with the option for seasonal guests to install private docks.
- Cabin Rentals: Various cabin options are available, including "The Lake Cottage" (noted for views and relaxation), Green Camping Cabin (sleeps 3), Cedar Camping Cabin (sleeps 5), Spruce Camping Cabin (sleeps 6), and Pine Camping Cabin (sleeps 5). These often include amenities like a double bed, bunk beds, kitchen areas with stovetop/refrigerator/microwave, and sometimes full bathrooms with showers. Guests typically need to bring their own linens.
- Water Access & Docks: Direct access to Hemlock Lake with a large 5ft x 60ft dock near the swimming area, where visitors can temporarily tie up boats or canoes. There's also a smaller boat dock specifically for "The Lake Cottage" guests.
- Showers: Shower facilities are available, though a review indicates they "definitely need upgraded and smell of sulfur" and may require quarters. The sulfur smell often indicates the presence of hydrogen sulfide gas or sulfur bacteria, common in well water.
- Port-a-Potties: Provided as restroom facilities, though one review noted issues with maintenance.
- Trash Disposal: Designated areas for waste disposal are provided, though a review mentioned overflowing trash, suggesting occasional maintenance challenges.
- Friendly Hostess/Owner: The owner, Barb, is consistently praised for being friendly, nice, and helpful, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere.
- Season of Operation: Open generally from May to October each year.
Hemlock Lake Campground offers several features and highlights that appeal to campers seeking a rustic, lake-centric experience in Michigan:
- Prime Lakefront Location: The campground covers the entire south end of Hemlock Lake, a spring-fed lake with depths up to 100 feet. This offers extensive lake frontage for campers.
- Excellent Fishing: Hemlock Lake is stocked with Bass, Bluegills, Perch, and Trout, making it an ideal destination for anglers. Many lakefront sites allow for fishing directly from the campsite or from private/community docks.
- Variety of Accommodations: With options for RV and tent sites (many with water/electric) as well as several cabin rentals, the campground caters to different camping styles and comfort preferences.
- Water Activities: Beyond fishing, the lake provides opportunities for boating (including aluminum fishing boats with oars provided with some cabin rentals), swimming (though with a "swim at your own risk" notice due to untested water, which is a key point for visitors to consider, especially given Michigan's campground licensing which typically requires water quality monitoring), and general lakeside relaxation.
- Peaceful Atmosphere: Campers frequently describe the environment as "pretty quiet for the most part, especially after dark," which is highly desirable for those seeking a tranquil escape.
- "Mom and Pop" Feel: The direct interaction with the friendly owner, Barb, provides a personalized and welcoming experience often found in smaller, family-run campgrounds.
- Country Critters: The natural setting allows for encounters with wildlife, contributing to the "back to nature" feel.
- Pet-Friendly: While specific rules for cabins may apply (e.g., no pets in cabins), campgrounds of this nature typically allow pets on campsites, though guests should confirm policies.

Hemlock Lake Campground Reviews
When you arrive at the designated spot to swim you are greeted with a sign that states this water is not tested to be safe to swim do so at your own risk. I may have changed some of the words but the meaning is the same. Showers definitely need upgraded and smell of sulfur. The port-a-potty was soo full the slider would not close. The trash was over full and all over the ground. The hostess is friendly and made us feel very welcome.
Jul 31, 2024 · Christine McDowellExcellent cabin and experience! The owner Barb was beyond nice and helpful! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the water in the cabin, "The Lake Cottage" smelled like methane. If it had a water filter or water softener, it would be perfect! Pretty quite for the most part, especially after dark which was really nice. The couple on the right with the beagle were super nice and friendly. The couple on the left with the little black dog, not so much, but overall we had a great time! Thanks again Barb!
Jun 06, 2022 · Silent ButDeadlyGreat place to camp. Clean, friendly, nice campsites.
Oct 12, 2023 · Robert AllenMany memories made here over the past 8 years.Restroom and shower aren't for the faint-hearted, but it's all a part of going out, camping, and having a good time. I wouldn't want it any other way. Cedar cabin is great for up to 4 people, if you don't mind sharing a bed!
Oct 03, 2022 · Ryan SchwierThe owners were rude. My guess felt so uncomfortable they decided to leave while dinner was cooking. It was embarrassing. They kept coming to our camp site and complaining because we had 10 people with 2 sites. We were not being loud or drinking alcohol. I'm not sure why the owners were acting like that.
