It's a place where the grandeur of Lassen National Forest provides a picturesque backdrop, inviting local residents from across California to discover a different pace of life amidst towering pines and open pastures.
Hat Creek Hereford Ranch RV Park & Campground strives to be a comprehensive outdoor hub, offering more than just a place to park or pitch a tent. The property boasts a range of amenities designed to enhance your stay, from full hookups for RVs to dedicated tent sites, making it versatile for various camping styles. Although some visitors have noted areas for potential improvement, particularly regarding site spacing and views for certain "premium" spots, the consistent theme in customer feedback highlights the positive interactions with staff. The "friendly and helpful staff" contribute significantly to the overall welcoming atmosphere, ensuring visitors feel well-cared for during their stay. This dedication to customer service is a crucial element that can transform a good trip into a great one.
Beyond the immediate confines of the campground, its strategic location is a major draw for Californians. Being in the Lassen National Forest area means unparalleled access to world-renowned attractions such as Burney Falls State Park and Lassen Volcanic National Park, both just a short drive away. This allows campers to use Hat Creek Hereford Ranch as a comfortable base from which to launch daily explorations into some of California's most breathtaking landscapes. Whether your passion lies in hiking, fishing, photography, or simply soaking in the natural beauty, this campground positions you perfectly to experience it all, making it a compelling choice for local adventurers.
Hat Creek Hereford Ranch RV Park & Campground is situated at 17855 Doty Rd, Hat Creek, CA 96040, USA. This location places it in a serene, rural setting within the broader Lassen National Forest area of Northern California. While it provides a sense of being "tucked away," it remains readily accessible, typically just a short drive off Highway 89 (from the junction of Hwy 299 & Hwy 89, it's about 11 miles south on Hwy 89, then a quarter-mile east on Doty Loop). This makes it a convenient destination for Californians traveling from various regions who are seeking to explore the natural wonders of the Shasta Cascade region.
The accessibility of the campground is generally good, with the final approach via Doty Rd, which, while potentially a "short dirt road," contributes to the ranch ambiance. Visitors have noted driving past pastures of cows and goats, enhancing the feeling of a rural escape before even reaching the main park area. For RVs, the park offers pull-through and back-in sites, accommodating various rig sizes. The internal roads are typically gravel, and sites are mostly level, though some may be dirt or grass, offering a varied experience depending on the chosen spot.
It's worth noting that while the campground aims to provide a natural setting, its location near the Hat Creek Radio Observatory can affect cell service. However, the campground often compensates for this with strong Wi-Fi available in the park, particularly near the office or a covered pavilion. This blend of remote feel with practical connectivity ensures that campers can enjoy the peace of nature without being entirely cut off. The proximity to major natural attractions like Burney Falls (around 20-30 minutes away) and Lassen Volcanic National Park (also 25-30 minutes away) further enhances its appeal as an accessible base for exploring the region.

Hat Creek Hereford Ranch RV Park & Campground Reviews
From a private campsite / RV park that in the descriptions says it is on the river, I expected more. Pitches very close together, especially for RVs. We took a premium pitch that had nothing premium, zero view, squeezed into a corner. It is not on the river, or rather the piece of river it overlooks is a few meters, the rest belongs to a private property nearby. The staff was very kind and helpful. But it takes a little more care and love in the care of the property and the spaces, given the price.
Jun 24, 2025 · Alice GregoriWe've been coming here for years. Great campground for families. Friendly and helpful staff. Bathrooms could use some renovation, but other than that, wouldn't change a thing.
