Halfway Flat Campground

Goose Prairie, WA 98937, USA

4.0
Clean campground. 10.00 per night. Three sites are first come. Large garbage cans. A mile or so of gravel to camp. River is within 100’ of each site.UPDATE.Stayed here two nights in mid June 2025. Windy from 9am-9pm. Good news is that this blows most of the flying bugs away. River flows fast and steady this time of year. Makes for great background noise at night. Showed up on a Wednesday, had the campground to ourselves. Everything is as mentioned above two years ago. The fee is still only 10.00, 5.00 with the interagency pass. - GJR

Halfway Flat Campground Introduce

For Washington locals seeking a true escape into the tranquil heart of the Cascade Mountains, Halfway Flat Campground in Goose Prairie, WA, stands out as a hidden gem. Tucked away within the magnificent Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, this campground offers a refreshingly quiet and incredibly clean experience, as consistently lauded by those who’ve discovered its charms. It's a place where the rhythmic flow of the Naches River becomes your primary soundtrack, and the bustling demands of daily life fade into the background.

Halfway Flat Campground is not about luxurious amenities; it's about connecting with nature in its purest form. Visitors rave about the "CLEANEST BATHROOMS I HAVE EVER BEEN IN!!! NO BAD SMELLS AT ALL!!!", a testament to the dedication to maintaining a pleasant environment even in a relatively primitive setting. While it offers a blend of first-come, first-served and reservable sites, it retains a serene ambiance, often providing a sense of having the campground almost entirely to yourself, especially during mid-week visits.

This article aims to provide a comprehensive and factual guide to Halfway Flat Campground, detailing its unique location, accessibility, the essential services it offers, and the standout features that make it an ideal choice for Washington residents looking for an authentic and peaceful outdoor adventure. Whether you're an avid angler, a keen hiker, or simply someone yearning for quiet nights under a star-filled sky, Halfway Flat Campground promises a refreshing return to the basics of camping in one of Washington's most beautiful natural settings.

Location and Accessibility

Halfway Flat Campground is located at Goose Prairie, WA 98937, USA, approximately 30 miles west of Naches, Washington, on the eastern side of the Cascade Mountains. This prime location places it within the vast Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, a region renowned for its diverse landscapes, ranging from high alpine peaks to lush old-growth forests and rugged shrub-steppe country. The campground itself is nestled in a mature forest of Douglas fir, western hemlock, and cedar, creating a shaded and picturesque environment with grassy areas, ferns, and mosses covering the forest floor.

Accessing Halfway Flat Campground involves navigating a short stretch of gravel road. From Naches, Washington, visitors should follow Highway 410 west for approximately 30 miles to Forest Road 1709. Turn left onto Forest Road 1709, cross the bridge, then turn left again onto Forest Road 1704. Follow Forest Road 1704 for approximately 1 mile, and the campground will be on your left. While the gravel road is manageable, as one reviewer noted, it's wise "don't drive a really low riding vehicle!" This hints at potentially uneven or bumpy conditions, though it's typically traversable for most standard vehicles.

The elevation of Halfway Flat Campground is approximately 2,522 feet, providing a pleasant climate during the summer months, with generally sunny and warm days and minimal precipitation. Winters in this area typically bring clear skies but abundant snow, making the campground inaccessible by vehicle during the snowy season. The campground is usually open from mid-May through the end of September, but visitors should always check current weather conditions and road accessibility with the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest before planning their trip, especially during the shoulder seasons. The remote nature means that visitors should arrive prepared with all necessary supplies, as cell service is unreliable, if not completely absent, until reaching Yakima.

Services Offered

Halfway Flat Campground provides a set of essential services that prioritize a clean and comfortable, albeit primitive, camping experience.

  • Campsites: The campground features a total of 8 campsites. Five of these sites are available for advanced reservation between Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend, while the remaining sites (and all sites outside this peak season) operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Sites can accommodate both tents and RVs/trailers, though hookups are not available. Each site is generally shaded and offers easy access to the Naches River.

  • Picnic Tables: Every campsite is equipped with a picnic table for convenient outdoor dining and meal preparation.

  • Fire Rings/Grills: Individual campsites include a fire ring or grill, perfect for campfires (when permitted) and outdoor cooking. Visitors must strictly adhere to current fire restrictions, which can be in place during dry periods.

  • Vault Toilets: The campground is highly praised for its exceptionally clean vault toilets. These non-flush facilities are meticulously maintained, ensuring "NO BAD SMELLS AT ALL!!!", a significant comfort in a primitive setting.

  • Potable Water: Potable (drinking) water is available at the campground. While some older information might suggest otherwise, current Recreation.gov listings and recent reviews confirm the presence of drinking water, though it might be via a hand pump, requiring containers to collect water.

  • Bear Boxes/Food Storage: While not explicitly stated for every site, it is highly advisable, given the wilderness setting and proximity to areas like William O. Douglas Wilderness, that campers take precautions for food storage. Large garbage cans are provided, encouraging proper waste disposal.

  • No Electricity: There are no electrical hookups available at Halfway Flat Campground, reinforcing its primitive and off-grid appeal.

  • Limited/No Cell Service: As noted by reviewers, cell service (especially for T-Mobile) is generally non-existent at the campground until one travels closer to Yakima. This ensures a truly unplugged experience.

  • Modest Fees: The nightly fee is $10.00, or $5.00 with an Interagency Pass, making it an affordable option for many campers.

Features / Highlights

Halfway Flat Campground's highlights are deeply rooted in its natural setting and the array of outdoor activities it facilitates.

  • Riverside Setting: The campground's proximity to the Naches River (within 100 feet of each site) is a major draw. The fast and steady flow provides "great background noise at night" and creates a scenic backdrop for all activities.

  • Excellent Fishing: The Naches River, adjacent to the campground, is popular for fishing, sustaining populations of rainbow and brown trout. Anglers will find ample opportunities to cast a line.

  • Access to Wilderness Areas: The campground provides ready access to hiking and horseback riding trails that extend into the nearby William O. Douglas and Norse Peak Wilderness areas, offering extensive opportunities for day hikes and multi-day backpacking trips.

  • Wildlife Viewing: The old-growth forest environment is home to abundant wildlife, including deer, elk, porcupine, native fish, and migratory birds. Visitors should be aware of ground squirrels (and hide food accordingly) and other forest creatures.

  • Off-Road Vehicle (OHV) and Snowmobile Access: The Little Naches drainage, nearby, is a popular area for off-road vehicle enthusiasts and snowmobiling in winter, providing a different kind of adventure.

  • Close to Chinook Pass and Mt. Rainier National Park: Halfway Flat is conveniently located just 30 minutes below the summit of Chinook Pass and offers relatively easy access to Mount Rainier National Park (via the scenic Mather Parkway), making it a great base for exploring these iconic Washington landmarks.

  • Unplugged Experience: The lack of cell service allows for a complete digital detox, encouraging campers to fully immerse themselves in the natural surroundings and human connection.

  • Tranquil Atmosphere: Described as a "great quiet campground," it provides a peaceful environment where the sounds of nature prevail, offering a true escape from noisy environments.

  • Swimming Holes: While not abundant, there are "a few nice" swimming holes along the river, providing opportunities to cool off on warm days.
