Grouse Mountain Campground is conveniently located in Chelan, WA 98816, USA. This prime location places it within easy reach for many Washington residents, offering a relatively straightforward drive from various parts of the state. While the address might seem simple, the journey to the campground itself is part of the adventure. Visitors have noted that the drive up to Grouse Mountain offers more scenic beauty than the campsite itself, providing breathtaking vistas as you ascend. This makes the approach to the campground an enjoyable part of your overall experience, setting the tone for the natural beauty you're about to immerse yourself in.
It's important to note that while the views from the campground are generally good, the true panoramic spectacle might be experienced on your way in. This also speaks to the rugged, natural setting of the campground, which prioritizes a genuine wilderness experience. Potential visitors should be prepared for a mountain drive, ensuring their vehicles are suitable for the terrain. Being aware of this aspect allows you to fully appreciate both the journey and the destination, making the most of your trip to this secluded spot.
Pit Toilets:
The campground features old wooden pit toilets, offering a rustic and traditional camping restroom experience. While not modern flush toilets, they are a fundamental amenity for an authentic outdoor stay.
Camping Sites:
Provides designated areas for setting up tents or parking RVs (though suitability for large RVs might vary given the drive and rustic nature). The campground has been noted for not being overly crowded, even on what might be considered busy weekends elsewhere, offering a more peaceful camping environment.
Views of Lake Chelan (from certain vantages):
While not every site offers a direct, unobstructed view, certain vantage points near the campground provide a decent outlook over the beautiful Lake Chelan, allowing campers to enjoy the scenic beauty of the region.
Secluded Environment:
The campground’s location contributes to a sense of seclusion, making it an ideal choice for those looking to escape the crowds and enjoy a quieter camping experience.
Uncrowded Atmosphere:
One of the most significant advantages of Grouse Mountain Campground is its tendency to be less crowded, even during peak times when other popular campgrounds might be fully booked. This allows for a more tranquil and personal camping experience, where you can truly feel immersed in nature without the noise and congestion often associated with popular recreational areas.
Scenic Drive Up:
As mentioned by visitors, the drive to Grouse Mountain Campground is a highlight in itself. The ascent offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, acting as a picturesque prelude to your camping adventure. This journey becomes an integral part of the overall experience, providing photo opportunities and a sense of anticipation.
Rustic Camping Experience:
For those who appreciate a more traditional, no-frills approach to camping, Grouse Mountain delivers. With amenities like old wooden pit toilets, it maintains a rustic charm that emphasizes self-reliance and a closer connection to the natural environment. This makes it ideal for campers who prefer a less developed setting.
Potential for Wildlife Viewing:
Given its natural, somewhat remote setting, there's always a chance to spot local wildlife, adding an exciting element to your camping trip. The quiet environment increases the likelihood of encountering various species in their natural habitat.
Escape from Digital Connectivity:
A notable feature, or perhaps a lack thereof, is the limited to no cell service at the campground itself, unless you venture down a specific road. For many, this is a welcome opportunity to truly disconnect from digital distractions and fully embrace the tranquility of the outdoors. It encourages genuine interaction with your surroundings and companions.
Proximity to Lake Chelan (indirect):
While the campground is nestled in the mountains, its proximity to Lake Chelan means that access to water-based activities and the broader Chelan area is still feasible, allowing for day trips to the lake if desired.
Post-Fire Landscape:
A significant factor to be aware of is that a fire came through the area approximately a year prior to some recent reviews. This means visitors should be cautious of damaged trees that may fall or break off, posing a potential hazard. Additionally, there may be stump holes or old ash pits, particularly hazardous for children, which require careful navigation. Always stay on marked paths and exercise vigilance.
Limited Cell Service:
As noted, cell service is generally unavailable at the campground. This should be factored into your planning, especially for emergencies or if you need to stay connected for work or personal reasons. It’s advisable to inform others of your lack of connectivity during your stay.

The campground's uncrowded nature is a significant draw, offering a peaceful retreat from the more bustling tourist destinations within the state. This means you can truly unwind and enjoy the tranquility of the outdoors, something often sought after by those living in more populated areas.
The rustic amenities, including the pit toilets, cater to those who appreciate a genuine camping experience and are looking to disconnect from the digital world. The limited cell service, while a practical consideration, can be a blessing for individuals and families seeking a digital detox, fostering stronger connections with nature and each other. The scenic drive up to the campground itself is a reward, offering stunning vistas that enhance the overall journey and provide a sense of anticipation for the adventure ahead.
While the post-fire landscape requires awareness and caution, it also speaks to the wild and untamed beauty of the area, offering a unique educational experience about forest recovery. The possibility of decent views of Lake Chelan from certain vantage points adds to the appeal, allowing campers to appreciate the broader beauty of the region.

Grouse Mountain Campground Reviews
Great place to camp. Wasn't crowded on what seemed like a busy weekend everywhere else. The views are good, but the drive up is prettier than the site itself.
Aug 10, 2022 · Jeremy SimpsonNo cell service unless you walk down the tank trapped road. There are old wooden pit toilets and a decent view of lake Chelan from certain vantages near the campground. A fire came through a year ago so be aware of damaged trees that may fall or break off and cause harm in the area as well as stump holes/old ash pits that children can fall into.
Nov 09, 2022 · Tyler MunsonThe road up was horrible for me and I couldn't make it to the campground so, this is reviewing the path and not the campground. Just know the road up is very steep dirt/gravel, and very many switchbacks. It was too far out for me, too exposed to a possible wildfire and bears but maybe someone else's jam.
Jul 25, 2023 · Lilli HillsOnly a few campsites. Tremendous views. I go every year. I've seen a Bear so follow the rules. No water so bring some and enjoy perfection.
