Greendale Campground Introduce
Greendale Campground offers a quiet and peaceful camping experience for those seeking a tranquil retreat in Utah's stunning wilderness. Located within the scenic Ashley National Forest, this small campground is an ideal spot for visitors who want to escape the crowds and enjoy a more intimate connection with nature. It’s an essential destination for locals who appreciate the serenity of a smaller site, where the focus is on a low-key and relaxing outdoor experience. Unlike larger, bustling campgrounds, Greendale has a limited number of sites, which contributes to its private and secluded feel. The area is characterized by its beautiful natural setting, with ponderosa pines providing some shade and the landscape dotted with grasses and wildflowers.
The campground is a great choice for both tent and RV campers. Its single-family sites are well-spaced, giving each party a significant amount of privacy. This feature is highly valued by regular campers who want to feel like they have a slice of the forest to themselves. Visitors often describe it as a solid and reliable campground, appreciating the cleanliness of the vault toilets and the overall well-maintained grounds. While it is a more rustic option without some of the modern luxuries, it provides the core necessities for a comfortable stay. The sound of the wind through the trees and the quiet atmosphere are the primary draws, making it a perfect spot for unwinding after a long day of hiking or exploring the nearby attractions.
Despite its smaller size, Greendale Campground is a great hub for exploring the larger Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. Its close proximity to major scenic areas and recreational opportunities ensures that there is always something to do, whether it's fishing, hiking, or simply enjoying a scenic drive. The high elevation provides cooler temperatures, a welcome relief during the hot summer months. For those who prioritize a calm, quiet, and private camping experience over a site with all the bells and whistles, Greendale Campground is a hidden gem that consistently delivers on its promise of a peaceful getaway.
Greendale Campground is nestled in a scenic location within the Ashley National Forest, near the famous Red Canyon area. Its address is Forest Road #187, Red Canyon, UT 84023, USA. This makes it a perfect stop for those exploring the Flaming Gorge region. The campground is located across the highway from the Greendale Group Campground, which is a key distinction for visitors to note to ensure they arrive at the correct location. The access road to the single-family sites is a dirt road, which, as some visitors have mentioned, can be dusty, especially in dry conditions.
The accessibility of the campground is generally good. It is located just off a major route, making it easy to find. While the final stretch is a dirt road, it is typically manageable for most vehicles, including RVs. On-site parking is available at each site, and the campground also offers a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, making it more inclusive for visitors with mobility needs. The proximity to the Red Canyon area means it is just a short drive from stunning overlooks and visitor centers that offer more information about the region's unique geology and natural history. For those who enjoy a bit of a scenic journey to their destination, the drive to Greendale Campground is a beautiful part of the experience, offering views of the rugged landscape that defines this part of Utah.
It is important for visitors to be prepared, as the services offered are limited. This is part of the charm for those who appreciate a less developed camping area. The amenities are a basic foundation for a comfortable outdoor stay.
RV Camping: The campground accommodates RVs, offering a convenient place to park and set up. While there are no hookups available, the sites are generally spacious enough to handle RVs and provide a secure, on-site parking spot.
Vault Toilets: Greendale Campground is equipped with vault toilets. As noted by campers, these facilities are well-maintained and kept clean, which is a significant plus for a rustic camping experience. There are no flush toilets or public showers, so visitors should plan accordingly.
Running Water: Based on recent visitor feedback, the water system at the campground has been non-functional or unreliable at times. It is highly recommended that all visitors bring their own supply of potable water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. A spigot may be present, but its functionality is not guaranteed, and planning for a dry camp is the safest approach.
Dumpster on Site: A convenient feature of the campground is the on-site dumpster, which allows campers to properly dispose of their trash and helps maintain a clean environment. This is a great service that supports the "leave no trace" ethos.
Greendale Campground's appeal lies in its specific features that cater to a certain type of camper. These highlights make it a standout choice for those looking for a particular kind of outdoor experience.
Small and Private: With only a handful of single-family sites, the campground feels incredibly private and uncrowded. The sites are well-spaced, providing enough distance between neighbors to ensure a quiet and personal experience.
Dog Friendly: This campground is a great option for pet owners, as dogs are allowed. This means your furry family members can join in on the camping adventure, making it a more inclusive experience for the whole family.
Good for Kids: The peaceful and safe environment makes Greendale Campground an excellent place for families with children. Kids have room to play and explore in the natural surroundings, and the smaller size of the campground makes it easier for parents to keep an eye on them.
Cell Signal: A notable advantage for some campers is the presence of a good cell signal. While many people camp to disconnect, having a reliable connection can be a useful safety feature or a way to share a glimpse of your adventure with friends and family.

Greendale Campground is an excellent choice for Utah residents and visitors who value peace, privacy, and a connection to nature. Its small size is a huge asset, creating a tranquil atmosphere that is often hard to find at larger, more popular campgrounds. The limited number of sites ensures that you won't be camping elbow-to-elbow with your neighbors, providing a genuine sense of seclusion. This is a major selling point for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle and truly relax.
Furthermore, the campground is a fantastic base for exploring the rich recreational opportunities of the Flaming Gorge area. Its proximity to Red Canyon, with its stunning viewpoints and geological formations, means that you can spend your days hiking or sightseeing and then return to a peaceful, private campsite. While the lack of a reliable water system might deter some, it is a minor inconvenience for those who are prepared to be self-sufficient, and it reinforces the campground's rustic charm. The presence of well-maintained vault toilets and an on-site dumpster are key services that make the experience much more comfortable than a truly primitive camping spot. Additionally, the campground's accessibility, with a wheelchair-accessible parking lot and dog-friendly policy, makes it a welcoming spot for a wide range of campers. For anyone seeking a quiet, no-frills, and highly private camping spot in one of Utah's most beautiful regions, Greendale Campground is a top choice. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect from the daily grind and reconnect with the natural world.

Greendale Campground Reviews
This cg is very nice, only 8 sites and every other one is either reserved or FF. No water (water system seems is not functioning 6-2931) but vault toilets are open. Dusty dirt road adjacent to the CG that goes over to a pvt RV park may be an issue for sites close to that side. Dumpster on site. Cell signal good. Only 4 stars due to water system not working, otherwise 5 stars. NOTE that the GREENDALE GROUP CAMPGROUND is across the hwy and is a different camp unit from this Greendale Campground which is all single family sites
June 14 · Untethered NomadSolid campground. Bathrooms were in good condition and there was enough space between campsites that it felt private enough. Some of the sites have more trees than others; the one we used only had a couple of big trees, so there wasn't much shade. Would not recommend sleeping in a hammock. One, cuz of the lack of sturdy trees and two, cuz it can get pretty cold and windy at night. There is a fire pit onsite, as well as a spigot and a dumpster for trash by the bathroom.
July 22 · Jon KwongYour run of the mill camp ground with pit toilets/picnic tables/fire pit w/grill/potable water spigot/trash dumpster. No RV hook ups. Well maintained. Right next door to camp store/resort and watergear rental. We come back every year to this place :-) No complaints.
July 14 · Geanna GrangerIdyllic little place, a lot of space between the sites, no amenities or hookups - but if you come prepared, that should not be a problem... Much nicer than the rv park next to it, and cheaper...
October 29 · Benedikt FuestIt’s a great place to go camping, super secluded and has a pretty night sky. Highly recommend!
