For Minnesotans seeking the quintessential North Shore experience, the Grand Marais Campground & Marina offers an unbeatable combination of convenience, amenities, and breathtaking Lake Superior views. Unlike primitive backcountry sites, this popular campground provides a full spectrum of camping options, from full hook-up RV sites to tent camping, all within steps of the vibrant arts town of Grand Marais. It’s an ideal basecamp for exploring everything the stunning Cook County region has to offer, from the rugged beauty of the Sawtooth Mountains to the serene waters of Lake Superior.
The Grand Marais Campground & Marina is more than just a place to park your RV or pitch your tent; it's a dynamic hub within the Grand Marais Recreation Area. With over a mile of beautiful shoreline, it provides direct access to Lake Superior, alongside its full-service marina. While some campers have noted the sites can be quite close together, emphasizing community over seclusion, many appreciate the lively atmosphere and the unparalleled accessibility to downtown Grand Marais. Reviews highlight its cleanliness, the friendly staff, and the sheer convenience of being able to walk to shops, restaurants, and local attractions. Whether you're looking for an amenity-rich RV experience, a convenient tent site for exploring, or a marina slip for your boat, this campground caters to a diverse range of preferences, making it a beloved destination for many Minnesota families and travelers.
Location and Accessibility
The Grand Marais Campground & Marina boasts a prime location at 114 S 8th Ave W, Grand Marais, MN 55604, USA. This highly desirable address places it directly on the shores of Lake Superior, framing the western side of the Grand Marais harbor and the bluffs beyond. Its position along Highway 61, the renowned North Shore Scenic Byway, makes it incredibly accessible for travelers driving up from Duluth or other points south.
One of the most significant advantages of this campground's location is its unparalleled accessibility to downtown Grand Marais. Reviewers consistently praise its "great walking/biking/driving distance to many places," including "restaurants, shops, local library and bookstore as well as grocery stores." This means campers can park their rigs or set up their tents and then easily stroll into town to explore galleries, dine at local eateries, or browse unique boutiques without needing to drive. The marina also offers convenient fuel and pump-out services, along with 30 boat slips and mooring buoys in the harbor, providing excellent accessibility for boaters looking to explore Lake Superior.
While the campground is centrally located, it is worth noting that some reviews suggest the sites can be "cramped" with "zero privacy" and "tiny lots," feeling "essentially a trailer park with extremely close quarter camping." However, other campers have found that despite the proximity, they "felt like we still had plenty of privacy with how many trees are in the campground." This indicates that while the density is higher than a primitive wilderness site, the convenience and community atmosphere are strong draws. Its year-round operation, with electric sites available even when water is off in winter, further enhances its accessibility for locals during all seasons.

Grand Marais Campground & Marina Reviews
We have staying at this campground for 3 years during memorial weekend and every time the experience is great. Great walking/biking/driving distance to many places. Restaurants, shops, local library and bookstore as well as grocery stores. The campground is clean and with amenities like full hook-up, water and electricity only, tent camping and for any rig size. Bathrooms are clean but need a quick retouch of the painting and the floors. $7 dollars for firewood, playground and basketball field.
May 25, 2025 · Matias AProbably the most cramped camping I've ever done. Zero privacy, tiny lots, and generally you're flanked on all four sides by other campers who are legitimately 20ft away with no blocking foliage.I understand the main appeal is the location, and it is a nice walking distance to a cute cool town with some stuff to do. However, in retrospect I wish I just hung out in the town for a couple hours before moving on, and not chosen to camp here.If you're fine with what's essentially a trailer park with extremely close quarter camping, cool. However, I wish I had read the reviews more closely, as this was definitely not the kind of camping I prefer. Couldn't wait to get out as soon as possible.
Jun 26, 2025 · Doug HarringtonIf you love coffee, shopping and hiking, definitely book this campground. The campground itself is pretty simple, but amazing views and a short walk away from the charming little town. And it's only 42 minutes from Grand Portage. For those of you wanting to see the Canadian border. We'll be staying again!!!
Jun 23, 2025 · Fanessa NasonThis is a great opportunity to setup base camp for a week and explore. It's a busier spot that people come to enjoy the views and water. Dawn was a great person and intuitive in her conversations. I'd recommend it to anyone, any rig.
May 19, 2025 · Corbin BrutonWas so beautiful. Best memories were made and the scene was beautiful and peaceful. We reserved this place as it wasn’t too far from Tettegouche and the devils kettle, which were spots we wanted to visit. My bf and I reserved the tent campsite 303, it was right in the middle of the other campsites covered with trees so perfect for privacy and space. Campsites are a bit small but perfect for just the two of us. The porta potty was very clean, so I didn’t feel the need to walk too far just to use the bathroom at night. By Sunday morning we were the only campers left! The only problem we had were the adorable sneaky chipmunks digging into our food! Lol
