Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve Camping Pod is situated in Crete, IL 60417, USA. While a precise street address for the camping pod itself isn't typically given (as it's within a larger preserve), the preserve's location in Crete, Will County, makes it highly accessible for residents across Illinois. Crete is located in the southern part of the Chicago metropolitan area, meaning a relatively short and straightforward drive for many urban and suburban dwellers looking for a quick nature getaway.
The preserve, which encompasses nearly 900 acres, is well-signposted once you are in the Crete area. Access to the camping pod often involves parking and then walking or using a wagon to transport gear to the individual sites, as they are not typically drive-up. This "pack-in" nature enhances the primitive feel of the campground. For Illinois locals, the accessibility means less time spent traveling and more time enjoying the natural beauty. Its proximity to major population centers, yet its ability to feel secluded, makes it a convenient and desirable destination for an authentic camping experience right in their backyard. The preserve's various trails also offer clear pathways for navigating to the camping areas once on site.
The Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve Camping Pod focuses on providing essential services that support a rustic, yet comfortable, tent camping experience. These services are aligned with the primitive nature of the campground within a well-managed forest preserve.
- Primitive Campsites: The core service is the provision of primitive campsites. These sites are designed for tent camping, with no electrical hookups available, encouraging a back-to-basics approach to outdoor living. Each wooded site is capable of accommodating up to six tents, and they are thoughtfully arranged to offer a sense of individual space for campers.
- Fire Rings and Picnic Tables: Every campsite is equipped with a fire ring for campfires and cooking, along with a picnic table, providing essential amenities for outdoor meals and gathering.
- Drinking Water: Despite being primitive, the campground ensures access to potable drinking water on-site, a crucial convenience for campers.
- Latrines: Clean and maintained latrines are available on-site, addressing basic sanitation needs. While one review specifically highlights their cleanliness, these are designed to be functional and align with a primitive camping experience.
- Mowed Central Grass Area: In addition to the wooded sites, there's a central area of mowed grass that serves as additional campsites, suitable for multiple tents, offering a more open camping experience.
- Will County Forest Preserve District Management: The campground is part of the larger Will County Forest Preserve District, which implies a level of professional management and maintenance, ensuring that the natural environment is preserved and facilities are kept in good condition. This oversight contributes to the overall positive experience.
Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve Camping Pod offers several distinct features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for tent campers in Illinois, especially those seeking a more authentic and quiet outdoor experience.
- Pristine Cleanliness and Maintenance: A significant highlight is the exceptional upkeep of the area. Reviews consistently praise the campground for being "clean and maintained," with specific emphasis on the "extremely clean" bathrooms/latrines, even in a primitive setting. This dedication to cleanliness greatly enhances the comfort level for campers.
- True Primitive Camping Experience: For those who enjoy roughing it slightly, the lack of electricity at the sites is a feature. It allows for a more traditional camping experience, encouraging reliance on natural light (and starlight!) and simplifying the setup.
- Wooded and Private Sites: The wooded campsites are a key draw, providing natural shade and a sense of seclusion. The arrangement allows most tents to "have their own little space," promoting privacy even within a campground setting.
- Beautiful Natural Setting and Star Gazing: Being surrounded by forest contributes to a "beautiful" atmosphere, and the clear night skies offer "beautiful to see the stars," a rare treat for many Illinois residents accustomed to light pollution. The preserve itself contains diverse ecosystems including woods, prairie, wetlands, and Plum Creek.
- Accessible Walking and Equestrian Trails: The preserve boasts a network of "short walking/equestrian trails," including 2.27 miles of natural surface trails and 3.15 miles of crushed limestone on the Plum Creek Greenway Trail. These offer opportunities for hiking, running, biking, and horseback riding, providing ample recreation right outside your tent.
- Plum Creek Nature Center: A major highlight within the preserve is the Plum Creek Nature Center. This facility offers hands-on nature exhibits and educational programs, enriching the experience for families and nature enthusiasts. It's an excellent resource for learning about the local flora and fauna.
- "Hidden Gem" Status: The campground and preserve are often described as a "hidden gem" within Will County, meaning they are less crowded than some other destinations, offering a more peaceful and less "busy" experience.
- No Drive-Up Sites (for some): While requiring a wagon for gear, the fact that wooded sites are "not drive-up" can be a highlight for those who prefer a more serene and car-free camping zone, enhancing the sense of being immersed in nature.

Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve Camping Pod Reviews
Great little Will county forest preserve district campground. No electricity but there is drinking water and latrines on site. The wooded sites can each accommodate 6 tents and it's arranged so that most tents can have their own little space. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table. There's a central area of mowed grass out in the open which is 2 more campsites that you can put multiple tents on. There are some short walking/equestrian trails and a nature center in the preserve. It's clean and maintained. And I was the one there camping on a Friday and Saturday night in June! The wooded sites are not drive-up so a wagon came in handy.
Jul 02, 2023 · CindyThe campground was awesome. It's easy to get to, freshly mown for the campsite, but you're still surrounded with the forest. It was beautiful to see the stars.
Jun 02, 2025 · Michael SchneiderNice and clean nature preserve. Well maintained hiking trails. Only issue is please bring off or something with promethazine in it if you're out walking. Ticks have started to emerge, although they aren't everywhere, it's better to plan so you don't bring any home with you.
