Access to Golden Lake Campground is generally straightforward, typically involving well-maintained, though sometimes unpaved, roads characteristic of Michigan's state forest campgrounds. While the exact driving directions will depend on your starting point within Michigan, reaching Iron River serves as the primary gateway. From Iron River, local signage and GPS will guide you the rest of the way to the campground. Its proximity to Iron River means that while you enjoy the tranquility of the wilderness, you're never too far from essential supplies, gas stations, or local services should you need them. Golden Lake Campground offers a more rustic camping experience, focusing on essential amenities that support traditional outdoor living. It's important for prospective campers to be aware of the specific services available, especially considering the recent revitalization efforts.
Campsites: The campground provides designated campsites suitable for tents and RVs. While previously heavily wooded, the sites now offer a more open layout, with most boasting lake views due to the removal of storm-damaged trees.
Vault Toilets: Basic, well-maintained vault toilet buildings are available for campers' convenience. These structures largely escaped the storm damage and continue to serve visitors.
Picnic Tables: Most campsites are equipped with picnic tables, providing a dedicated surface for meal preparation and outdoor dining.
Fire Pits with Adjustable Grates: Campers will find fire pits at each site, featuring adjustable cooking grates. This allows for versatile campfire cooking, a beloved part of the camping experience.
Abundant Firewood (Self-Gathered): As a result of the 2020 windstorm, there is plenty of downed wood around the campground. This provides a readily available source of free firewood for campers, enhancing the rustic feel and reducing personal costs.
No Potable Water Source (as of recent reviews): It is crucial to note that, as of recent customer reviews, the hand pump for drinking water was broken during the storm and has not yet been replaced. Campers should plan to bring their own drinking water for the duration of their stay.
No Camping Fees (for a period following reopening): In an effort to welcome campers back and acknowledge ongoing recovery, the campground did not charge fees for the 2022 camping season. Campers should verify current fee structures prior to their visit, as this is subject to change.
Despite (or perhaps because of) its journey through a significant natural event, Golden Lake Campground offers several unique features and highlights that make it a compelling destination for Michiganders.
Stunning Lake Views: One of the most significant post-storm improvements is that nearly every campsite now boasts a lake view. This is a remarkable feature, offering picturesque scenery right from your tent or RV and enhancing the overall aesthetic of your stay.
Excellent Fishing Opportunities: Golden Lake itself is highly regarded for its fishing. Campers have direct access to a "very nice lake for fishing," making it an ideal spot for anglers looking to cast a line and enjoy the tranquility of the water.
Pleasant Swimming: Beyond fishing, Golden Lake is also described as "equally nice" for swimming. Its clear waters offer a refreshing escape on warm Michigan days, perfect for families and individuals alike.
Rustic and Quiet Atmosphere: For those who prefer a less commercialized camping experience, Golden Lake Campground provides a peaceful and quiet environment. It's a place where you can truly disconnect and immerse yourself in nature.
Resilience and Renewal Story: The campground's journey of recovery from the 2020 windstorm adds a unique narrative to your visit. Witnessing the natural rejuvenation and the efforts to bring the campground back to life can be an inspiring aspect of your stay.
Free Firewood Availability: The abundance of downed trees post-storm means campers have access to free firewood, a practical and cost-saving benefit that enhances the traditional campfire experience.
Adjustable Cooking Grates on Fire Pits: The thoughtful inclusion of adjustable cooking grates on the fire pits is a small but significant detail that improves the functionality for campfire cooking, making meal preparation more convenient.

Golden Lake Campground Reviews
This campground was heavily damaged by a windstorm in 2020. As of May 2022 the downed trees and hazard trees were hauled away. The campground reopened in July 2022. It is not charging fees for the 2022 camping season. What was once a heavily wooded campground is now almost completely open. This campground is built into a hill sloping up from the lake, so with most trees gone, nearly every site now has a lake view.A massive pine tree snapped the hand pump in half when it fell; until it's replaced, the campground is without a drinking water source. Fortunately the vault toilet buildings and most picnic tables escaped the storm unscathed.Golden Lake remains a very nice campground adjacent to an equally nice lake for fishing or swimming.
Jul 30, 2022 · Greg KruegerNice campground to spend a night or a few nights. Plenty of free firewood around with the downed trees, but overall the campground isn’t too bad. There is still no water, or cost to camp here. The fire pits were really nice, I liked the adjustable cooking grate.
May 27, 2024 · Nick PoshRan across this place looking for a spot to camp. It was perfect for what we were looking for. Quiet, only one other person there and free. Camped right along the lake too.
Jan 20, 2024 · Justin BondIt's free so cant complain about 15 minutes from iron River off the man road wasn't too busy but def a few people nice lake view bathrooms and fire grate but that's about it worth it if you just need a quick place to camp but nothing special
Mar 20, 2025 · Noah VolkStarted out good. Lots of wood. Peaceful and other campers were chill too. We heard from one of them that the camper in the site next to us had been sitting there for over a month, after a big party and place was trashed. Just after 9 PM on our second night, a LOUD family with unleashed dog arrived, fired up their LOUD generator, and now I'm trying to find somewhere else for tomorrow. They are the only other campers whose voices I've heard since we've been here. And they are RIGHT NEXT DOOR. With little tree coverage between us, I just cannot. Thank you to the majority of campers out there who respect others.
