Gates Of Lodore Campground Introduce
For Colorado locals who have experienced the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains and are now seeking a different kind of natural wonder, the Gates of Lodore Campground is an absolute must-visit. Nestled within the spectacular Dinosaur National Monument, this campground is a true hidden gem that feels a world away from the everyday. It’s a place where the towering cliffs of Lodore Canyon create a dramatic backdrop for your adventure, and the peaceful Green River flows past your campsite. This isn't just a place to stay; it's the gateway to an unforgettable experience filled with unparalleled scenic beauty, rich history, and a quiet solitude that is increasingly hard to find.
The campground is known for its pristine environment and well-maintained facilities, despite its remote location. As one visitor noted, the "two very clean bathrooms with motion sensor lights" and "lots of water spigots" are a welcome surprise. The sites are large, offering plenty of space for both tents and RVs (without hookups), and many have picnic tables and fire rings. This is a place that feels wild and untamed while still providing the essential amenities for a comfortable and safe trip. The presence of a ranger on-site adds a sense of security and a knowledgeable resource for any questions you might have about the park or the area. The air is fresh, the views are expansive, and the tranquility is palpable, making it a perfect spot to unplug and reconnect with nature.
One of the biggest draws of Gates of Lodore is its role as a put-in for whitewater rafting trips down the Green River. The boat ramp can get quite busy during the peak season, but it's this very activity that makes the campground so vibrant and exciting. Watching rafters prepare for their journey through the canyon adds a sense of adventure to the atmosphere. For those who prefer to stay on dry land, the "short trail with family friendly guide" provides an excellent way to explore the area. The hike to the Gates of Lodore viewpoint is fairly easy and rewards you with stunning views down into the canyon, offering a perspective that rivals some of the most famous sights in the American West. At night, the magic continues. With little to no light pollution, the "stars, stars, and stars like you’ve never seen" are an unforgettable spectacle, making it a prime location for stargazing.
Gates of Lodore Campground is located in a remote part of Dinosaur National Monument, near Dinosaur, CO 81610, USA. Its accessibility is a defining feature of the experience. The campground is located at the very end of a 13-mile gravel road that branches off the Harpers Corner Road. The drive is scenic but requires caution, as the road can be rough and may be impassable in wet conditions. While a 4x4 is not always necessary on dry days, a high-clearance vehicle is highly recommended. The journey itself is an adventure, taking you through the rugged and beautiful landscape of the monument. It’s important to check road conditions and be prepared with enough fuel, as the nearest services are a long drive away. Once you arrive, you’ll find a spacious parking lot and campsites that are easily accessible. The campground is also wheelchair-accessible, with some sites and the restrooms designed to accommodate visitors with mobility concerns. Its distance from major cities ensures a quiet atmosphere and a camping experience that truly feels like an escape.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Amazing! Two very clean bathrooms with motion sensor lights, river and boat access, beautiful short trail with family friendly guide, big camping spots, lots of water spigots and drop dead gorgeous! Bring your river fishing gear and your s’mores because you won’t want to leave.
May 02 · Carolyn WorkAn amazing place to camp with some pristine views, can be quite quiet; ranger and ranger house so there is someone there to help answer your questions. The boat ramp can get quite busy, but the trail to see the Gates is fairly easy, bit of vertical at the beginning, otherwise quite flat. At night, and especially during new moon, look up, stars, stars, and stars like you’ve never seen!
August 30 · Topher BVery beautiful area. Plenty of camping available at $10/night. There is a short hiking trail that is not dog friendly or well shaded. The trail has rocky inclines. Many main trails in Dinosaur National Monument are not dog friendly (some are!!) so plan before you visit. Make sure you pack plenty water and sunscreen. There is a pamphlet for $1 at the start of the trail that explains the 16 points signed on the trail. There are very scenic and historic views here.
December 03 · Stormy ConcobyIt's definitely dated! Not really pet friendly. About the only place you can have your pet is in a camp spot or on the boat ramp. That being said it's a 10 for it's beauty and history!
October 05 · Dan KehrigQuiet. Two boat trips launched. Chilly breezes, but still enjoyed tee shirt weather.
