Garden Point Campground isn't just a place to pitch a tent; it's an experience. Nestled in a picturesque part of California, it provides a rustic yet rewarding camping environment. Whether you're a seasoned camper or looking to try something new, understanding the nuances of this location can make all the difference. From its unique relationship with the water levels of nearby Lake Oroville to the basic amenities that make a camping trip comfortable, we’ll delve into all the details that matter to you, the local adventurer.
Garden Point Campground is situated in Camptonville, CA 95922, USA. This location places it within the beautiful and vast recreational opportunities of Northern California, particularly in proximity to Lake Oroville. While the exact access point can sometimes be influenced by water levels, the general area offers a sense of seclusion that many seek in a camping experience.
Access to the campground is primarily by road, leading you through scenic California landscapes. However, it's crucial for visitors to be aware that the journey from where you park your vehicle to your actual campsite might involve a hike. As some past visitors have noted, depending on the water level, this hike can be significant. For instance, in August 2022, when water levels were low, visitors experienced a considerable hike up to their sites, emphasizing the need to "pack light" and be prepared for a "good workout." Conversely, in Memorial 2023, with water levels over 100%, the camping experience was described as "amazing," suggesting more direct access to the water. This variability means it's wise to be prepared for differing levels of physical exertion to reach your chosen spot. Therefore, planning ahead and considering the current conditions, especially water levels, is highly recommended for a smoother arrival.
- Vaulted Toilets: The campground provides vaulted toilets, which are a common amenity in more rustic camping environments. While functional, some past visitors have noted that the cleanliness can vary, with one remarking, "Seen better bathrooms on active construction sites." It's advisable to bring your own hand sanitizer and any personal toiletries you may require.
- Campsites with Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for preparing meals, dining, or simply gathering with your group.
- Campsites with Fire Rings: Many, though not all, campsites include a fire ring. These are essential for campfires, cooking, and warmth, provided local fire regulations allow for fires at the time of your visit. It’s always best to check for current fire restrictions before you go.
- Online Booking and First-Come, First-Serve Options: For those who prefer to plan, spots can be booked online ahead of time to guarantee a site. Additionally, the campground also offers first-come, first-serve options for some sites, providing flexibility for spontaneous trips.
- Variable Water Access: A defining feature of Garden Point Campground is its dynamic relationship with the water level of Lake Oroville. At high water levels, the camping experience is enhanced, potentially offering more direct water access and scenic views. However, when water levels are low, the shoreline can recede significantly, leading to a challenging hike to reach the water's edge, often with a steep "45* angle or packed" shoreline. This means the experience can vary greatly depending on the season and year.
- Scenic Views: Despite the access challenges at lower water levels, many sites offer truly captivating views. Site 20 was specifically highlighted for its "really good view," and sites 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 were also recommended for their advantageous positions. These spots provide picturesque backdrops for your camping adventure.
- Seclusion and Nature Immersion: Garden Point offers a sense of being truly away from it all. The relative remoteness and the natural setting make it an excellent choice for those looking to immerse themselves in the tranquility of the wilderness.
- Fishing Opportunities: For anglers, the area is noted for its bass fishing. One past visitor specifically mentioned they "would return but only to fish for bass," indicating a good potential for a successful fishing trip.
- Level Campsites: Many of the campsites are described as "pretty level," which is a significant advantage for setting up tents and ensuring a comfortable night's sleep.
- Limited Breeze until Evening: Visitors should be aware that the campground may experience limited breeze during the day, with any cooling air often not arriving until "about 9pm or 930pm." This is an important consideration for comfort, especially during warmer months.

Please note that specific phone numbers for Garden Point Campground are not readily available through general public searches, which is common for many remote or less developed campgrounds. It is often recommended to refer to the booking platform or the managing authority (e.g., California State Parks, US Forest Service) for direct contact information or to confirm details regarding your reservation or current conditions. Online booking platforms usually provide the most reliable way to secure a spot and get up-to-date information.
For Californians seeking an authentic outdoor experience, Garden Point Campground presents a unique and compelling option. Its location in Camptonville, within the beautiful Northern California landscape, makes it relatively accessible for those living in various parts of the state, particularly the central and northern regions. This isn't a resort-style campground; it's a place where you can truly connect with nature, offering a rustic charm that many local adventurers cherish.
The variability in water levels at Lake Oroville adds an interesting dynamic to the experience. For those who visit when the water is high, it promises an "amazing" time with potentially easier water access for recreation. Even when water levels are low and the hike to the shoreline is more challenging, it offers an opportunity for a good workout and the satisfaction of reaching a secluded spot. This adaptability makes it suitable for different types of local campers – from those seeking a serene lakeside retreat to those who enjoy a bit of a physical challenge with their wilderness immersion.
Furthermore, the availability of basic amenities like tables and fire rings (where permitted) provides the necessary comforts without detracting from the natural environment. The potential for excellent bass fishing is a significant draw for local anglers looking for a productive day on the water. While some aspects, like the condition of the vaulted toilets, might require a degree of expectation management, they are typical of more remote camping sites and often part of the authentic wilderness experience.
Ultimately, Garden Point Campground is a testament to the diverse natural beauty California offers. It encourages a deeper appreciation for the outdoors, promoting activities like hiking, fishing, and simply enjoying the tranquility of nature away from urban distractions. For local Californians, it’s not just a campground; it’s an invitation to explore, challenge themselves slightly, and create lasting memories in one of the state's beautiful, albeit sometimes rugged, natural havens. Be prepared for a genuine outdoor adventure, and Garden Point Campground is likely to deliver.

Garden Point Campground Reviews
Update went memorial 2023 water level over 100% camping was amazingDepending on the water level. We went August 2022 & it was a hike up. The water is low so pack light! Think back pack camping! Unless you’re ready for a good work out! They have vaulted toilets! Campsites come with a table and fire ring. Sites are pretty level. We stayed at site 20 I really like the view we had. Site 3,4,1,5,6 are really good spots as well. Book online ahead to guarantee a spot if you want or they have first come first serve for some! Some sites have a fire ring some don’t.
May 31, 2023 · Fallon BertrandDon't judge a campground by its website. My wife and I had a 200 yard hike to our site. There is little to no shoreline and what there is of shoreline is at a 45* angle or packed.Campsite is amazing. Water access is just about non existent from site 7. Seen better bathrooms on active construction sites. No breeze until about 9pm or 930pm.I would return but only to fish for bass.
Jul 28, 2019 · Cross FireWe were in combo campground with #8. Very quiet relative to the rest of them and more private, set off in the back. Level and cool. Only complaint is you have a ways to carry your stuff in and no direct water view. If you go the back side it's closer, but steeper shelf to get your stuff up. Lake is absolutely beautiful and warm. Good mtn biking too.
Sep 01, 2019 · Cathy BakerVery nice campground with sites overlooking the water. We camped when the water level was high so access to the camp from our boat was easy.
May 28, 2024 · Aura Nissa ThompsonMeth head island. Beware. I was looking forward to a relaxing weekend of camping and fishing. We chose to go to a boat in site. Thinking the looks wouldn't be there. Wrong. We were next to a group of 20 youths . All weekend it was loud music. Generator all night. As I am typing this IT'S 6AM AND THEY ARE STILL GOING AT IT. Buyer Beware!
