Tucked away near Tofte, this destination provides a welcome escape from the everyday, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a more traditional, less developed style of outdoor adventure. Unlike larger, more amenity-rich campgrounds, Fourmile Lk embraces its "rustic" designation, providing a quieter and often more intimate connection with nature.
The allure of rustic campgrounds for many locals lies in their simplicity and the promise of a peaceful retreat. Fourmile Lk fits this description perfectly, offering a chance to truly unplug and enjoy the sounds of the forest and the lake. While it’s not without its quirks, as any true wilderness experience can be, its fundamental appeal lies in its natural setting and the opportunities it provides for fishing, boating, and simply being present in the great outdoors. This overview will delve into what makes Fourmile Lk Rustic Campground a notable option for Minnesota residents seeking an unvarnished camping adventure.
It's important for prospective campers to set their expectations accordingly. A rustic campground implies fewer amenities and a greater emphasis on self-sufficiency. This is part of the charm for many, offering a more challenging yet deeply rewarding experience. The North Shore region of Minnesota is celebrated for its stunning landscapes, and Fourmile Lk is a part of this rich tapestry, providing access to diverse terrain, clear waters (though some North Shore lakes can be "bog-stained"), and an abundance of recreational possibilities. Whether you're a seasoned angler or simply looking for a quiet place to unwind, Fourmile Lk offers a distinctive Minnesota outdoor adventure.
Location and Accessibility
Fourmile Lk Rustic Campground & Backcountry Sites is conveniently located at The Grade, Tofte, MN 55615, USA. This places it within the beautiful Superior National Forest, just a short drive from the scenic North Shore of Lake Superior. While the address provides a clear geographic reference, accessing the campground involves navigating a network of forest roads, which are typically gravel and well-maintained but can vary in condition depending on recent weather. From Duluth, visitors generally follow Highway 61 north past Schroeder, then turn left onto Forest Road 343, followed by a left onto FR 166, and finally a right onto FR 346, which leads to the campground after about five miles.
The campground itself is considered "drive-in," meaning you can park your vehicle near your designated campsite. This is a significant advantage over true backcountry sites that require a hike or paddle to access. However, it retains a rustic feel by being relatively small, with only four car-accessible campsites. In addition to these drive-in sites, Fourmile Lk also boasts two backcountry sites accessible by boat, offering an even deeper level of seclusion for those willing to paddle across the lake. This dual accessibility caters to different camping preferences, allowing for both a more convenient rustic experience and a more isolated backcountry adventure.
The remote nature of the campground means that cell service can be unreliable or non-existent, which for many, is a desirable feature that enhances the sense of escape. Visitors should prepare by downloading maps offline and ensuring their vehicle is ready for gravel road travel. The relatively easy drive from Highway 61 makes it a feasible destination for many Minnesotans, providing a convenient entry point to the vast outdoor opportunities of the Superior National Forest.
Services Offered
- Designated Campsites: Fourmile Lk Rustic Campground offers four drive-in campsites, each with a cleared area suitable for tent setup. These sites are designed to be relatively private, though the "rustic" nature means spacing can vary. Additionally, there are two backcountry sites accessible by boat for even greater solitude.
- Fire Rings/Grates: Each campsite is equipped with a metal fire ring or grate, allowing for contained campfires. Campers should always check for fire bans or restrictions, especially during dry periods, and ensure fires are completely extinguished before leaving.
- Picnic Tables: Most, if not all, of the designated campsites include a picnic table for convenient meal preparation and dining.
- Vault Toilets (Outhouses): The campground provides basic vault toilets, also known as outhouses, for waste disposal. These are maintained but are primitive facilities without running water.
- Boat Launch & Dock: For those looking to enjoy Fourmile Lake, there is a gravel boat ramp and a dock available, along with parking for trailers, which is especially useful for accessing the backcountry sites or simply enjoying a day on the water.
- No Potable Water: It is crucial for campers to note that there is no potable (drinkable) water provided at the campground. Visitors must bring all their own drinking water or be prepared to filter and treat water from Fourmile Lake for consumption.
- No Trash Pickup: This is a "pack it in, pack it out" facility. There are no trash receptacles, and campers are responsible for packing out all their garbage and leaving their site cleaner than they found it.
- No Electricity/Hook-ups: As a rustic campground, there are no electric hook-ups for RVs or other devices. Campers should be prepared for a fully off-grid experience.
Features / Highlights
- Excellent Walleye and Black Crappie Fishing: Fourmile Lake is highly regarded for its fishing. Anglers consistently report success with walleye, often landing "eaters" averaging 14-15 inches, and a self-sustaining crappie population that can produce good-sized fish. Yellow perch are also common.
- Diverse Lake Structure for Fishing: The lake offers plenty of structure, including boulders, reefs, and fallen trees, providing ideal habitats for fish. This variety makes for engaging and strategic fishing.
- Wild Rice Stands: The southwest bay of Fourmile Lake is noted for its healthy stand of wild rice, attracting waterfowl and adding to the natural beauty and ecological significance of the area.
- Opportunities for Backcountry Boating/Camping: The presence of two boat-accessible backcountry sites allows for a deeper dive into the wilderness, offering a more secluded camping experience for those with canoes or small boats.
- Proximity to Superior National Forest & BWCAW: The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the wider Superior National Forest and is relatively close to entry points for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, providing access to extensive hiking, paddling, and wildlife viewing opportunities.
- Rustic, Quiet Atmosphere: Despite being drive-in accessible, the campground's small size and rustic nature typically foster a quieter environment compared to larger, more developed campgrounds. This is a key draw for those seeking peace and tranquility in nature.
- Dark Skies for Stargazing: Far from urban light pollution, Fourmile Lk offers exceptional opportunities for stargazing, with clear views of constellations and, on occasion, the Northern Lights.
- Wildlife Viewing: The surrounding forest and lake are home to various Minnesota wildlife, including deer, moose, bears (proper food storage is essential), and a wide array of bird species, including loons and eagles.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Fourmile Lk Rustic Campground & Backcountry Sites is an exceptional choice for Minnesotans looking for an authentic and accessible wilderness experience without venturing deep into the Boundary Waters. Its "rustic" classification means it offers a simpler, quieter atmosphere than many larger campgrounds, appealing to those who cherish peace and quiet in nature. While recent feedback highlights some challenges with noise and generator use, especially concerning quiet hours, these issues often stem from individual camper behavior rather than the inherent nature of the campground itself. The fact that local authorities, like the Lake County Sheriff and rangers, are responsive indicates a system in place to address concerns, even if outcomes can be frustrating for some.
What truly makes Fourmile Lk suitable for locals is its prime location for fishing, particularly for walleye and black crappie, which are highly prized by Minnesota anglers. The abundance of natural structure in the lake ensures a challenging and rewarding fishing experience. For those who enjoy boating, the convenient boat launch provides easy access to the water, opening up opportunities for both casual recreation and reaching the secluded backcountry sites.
Furthermore, its position within the Superior National Forest, just off the famed North Shore, means it serves as a fantastic base for exploring the wider region. Hikers can access numerous trails, and the breathtaking scenery provides ample opportunities for photography and wildlife observation. The affordability of rustic campgrounds is also a significant draw for many Minnesotans, making outdoor adventures more accessible. Despite occasional frustrations that can arise in any shared public space, Fourmile Lk Rustic Campground offers an unparalleled opportunity for Minnesotans to connect with their state's wild beauty, embracing a simpler way of camping and creating lasting memories in the heart of the North Woods.

Fourmile Lk Rustic Campground & Backcountry Sites Reviews
Rustic campgrounds imply quiet time after 10:00? Not according to the Lake County Sheriff. So…If you want to run your generator all night, just tell the upset campers, (whose trip, like mine, you’ve ruined), you don’t care, then just tell the sheriff and ranger, that you have CPAPs. They won’t even check. No noisy warning to the neighboring campers before we check in, no idea until after 10:00, when mean campers’ generators stay on.This not very Minnesota Nice.I asked the sheriff, (his body cam was recording), what that means to us camper neighbors that came up to escape the noise.“So, Sheriff, its neighbors be dammed?”“Yep.”***** There is absolutely no exception on any government website, that’s why they have regulations. It’s ludicrous. Here’s the punchline; the sheriff and ranger awarded the alleged CPAP users a medical exemption.THERE IS NO SUCH THING!!!“NEIGHBORS BE DAMMED.”Nice place, otherwise.(Don’t threaten to sink anybody’s boat, or the sheriff will come. And the tension” for us other campers? I figured I’d be scared by bears, not some local who treats this campground like a lake home.I go to rustic campsites because I can’t afford to pay. And if you do pay, you have to buy wood in a national forest. I love rustic campgrounds!
Jul 18, 2024 · Stephen - Not SteveHad lots of fun camping out on the lake catching my meal of Walleye and Black Crappie. This is a dirty water lake like most around the area. Lots of crawdads for the fish to feed on in the shallows at night. Plenty of structure: boulders, reefs, and fallen trees to fish. Bring plenty of jigs! Be careful running your outboard at full throttle with all the sunken boulders you risk damaging the lower unit. Beautiful lake with great walleye fishing just be patient!
May 07, 2020 · My Time OutdoorsThis is one of my favorite campgrounds in the Tofte/Lutsen area. There are only 4 sites, a gorgeous lake and a vault toilet that stays clean. The sites are always left in good condition.
