This article will provide a clear and factual overview of what to expect at Fort Union, from its unique facilities to the practical details that will help you plan your visit effectively.
Fort Union Campsite is a decent option for campers who are looking for a straightforward, no-frills experience. It is a part of the Piercing Arrow section of the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation, which gives it a well-managed and organized feel. The site is known for its foundational amenities that support a basic but comfortable stay. The reviews, while mixed, offer a candid look at the campsite, highlighting its remote nature and unique features. While some might find the distance from the main camp facilities a drawback, others might see it as an opportunity for a more private and peaceful camping experience. The campground's key selling point is its significant building for activities and its "good" pavilion, which set it apart from more basic sites. It’s a place that caters to those who are prepared for the elements and appreciate the raw, natural side of camping, complete with the insects and spiders that come with it, as humorously noted by one reviewer.
Fort Union Campsite is situated in Osceola, MO 64776, USA. As part of the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation, its location is in the heart of the Ozark region, offering a scenic and natural setting. The campsite is located in the southern part of the Piercing Arrow section. A key detail to note is its remoteness; reviews state it is "a significant walk to anywhere at P.A." This means that those planning to participate in activities at the main camp will need to be prepared for a good hike. However, it is also noted as being "a short walk to Ico," which refers to the nearby area of Iconium. This proximity can be a significant benefit for those who may have specific activities or plans in that direction. The remote nature of the campsite is a key aspect of its character, ensuring a quiet and secluded atmosphere. Accessibility by vehicle is possible, with on-site parking available to accommodate campers. This is a crucial convenience that simplifies the process of unloading and setting up camp, especially given its distance from other facilities.
The services offered at Fort Union Campsite are designed to provide the necessary comforts for a solid camping trip. While it may not have all the luxuries of an RV park, it has the key amenities that make a tent camping experience more enjoyable and reliable.
- Restrooms: The campsite has a “lolly,” which is a term for a restroom or latrine. The review notes it is a "standard good" one, which suggests it is clean and well-maintained. Having a dedicated restroom facility is a major plus for any camper, as it provides a convenient and hygienic option for personal needs.
- Picnic Tables: Picnic tables are available at the campsite. These provide a dedicated, flat surface for meal preparation, dining, and other activities. This simple amenity can greatly enhance the camping experience, making it easier to enjoy meals outdoors.
- Tent Sites: Fort Union provides tent sites for campers. These are the main accommodation type, and the surrounding area offers both shaded and open spaces for setting up camp.
- On-site Parking: The availability of on-site parking is a key service that provides convenience and security. Campers can park their vehicles close to their site, which is particularly helpful for unloading gear, especially considering the campsite’s remote location.
Fort Union Campsite has several features and highlights that set it apart, even with its noted remoteness. These elements are what make it a decent and viable option for the right kind of camper.
- Significant Building for Activities: One of the most notable features is the presence of a "significant building which is great for activities." This is a major highlight, as it provides a large, covered indoor space. This building would be invaluable for group gatherings, educational sessions, or as a shelter during inclement weather.
- Good Pavilion: In addition to the large building, the campsite also has a "standard good pavilion." This covered, open-air structure is perfect for communal meals or as a shaded gathering spot during the day.
- Mix of Shade and Open Area: The campsite's environment offers a mix of shade and open areas. While it is noted that there is "quite a bit of open area," which can make it hotter, the presence of shade is also a significant benefit for finding relief from the sun during the day. This variety allows for flexibility in choosing a tent site based on personal preference.
- Remoteness and Privacy: The distance from the main camp facilities means that Fort Union is often less crowded and quieter than other, more centrally located campsites. This provides a sense of privacy and a deeper connection to nature, which is a key highlight for those seeking a true escape.

Fort Union Campsite Reviews
Fort Union is a decent though not great campsite in the southern part of Piercing Arrow, of the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation. Because of it's remoteness, it is a significant walk to anywhere at P.A. and a short walk to Ico.We had a lot of rain and there were many muddy areas around Fort Union - more than most campsites. In addition to the standard good pavilion and lolly, there is a significant building which is great for activities. There is quite a bit of shade, but there also is quite a bit of open area, making it hotter than most P.A. campsites. All things considered, I would try to get a location closer to the center of P.A. though this is not a terrible option. Personally, I would camp in Sawmill because of location, shade and spacing.
