This was the wildest of campsites we’ve been to. You’re about 30 ft away from the next person and except for their dog barking madly the whole day, we would have not heard anything except the forest around us.No ranger rounded on us which is good/bad? Everything was clean, lots of tables and bbq grills and bear lockers, toilets are vault toilets, bring a flashlight tho. A big dumpster near the toilets too for trash. Lots of campsites for tents and great weather for mid June. No bear interactions during our trip. Also beware that there was no signal for both Verizon and T-Mobile cell phones here. The town is 30 minutes drive away so we were spooked about having possible medical emergencies. I would travel with or rent a satellite phone next time.Sugar pine reservoir is really nice. The water wasnt dirty but beware of the water as you sink quicker than salt water. A friend of mine almost drowned by becoming too fatigued. so bring life jackets and floats. Again no ranger here either, but people were generally nice and not loud or drunk etc.If you want that removed from civilization feeling then come here! - Tj Gen

Forbes Creek Campground is strategically located at 22830 Foresthill Rd, Foresthill, CA 95631, USA. This address places it within the stunning Sierra Nevada foothills, offering a genuinely remote and natural setting. For residents across California, particularly those in the Sacramento metropolitan area and the wider Northern California region, the drive to Foresthill provides a scenic journey into increasingly wilder terrain. While it offers a secluded feel, the campground is still relatively accessible, making it a viable option for a weekend or longer trip for many Californians.

The journey to Forbes Creek involves driving through the charming town of Foresthill, which serves as the last bastion of cell service and amenities before heading into the deeper wilderness. The drive from Foresthill to the campground itself takes approximately 30 minutes, reinforcing the sense of being truly "away from it all." This distance from civilization is a key aspect of Forbes Creek's appeal, promising an undisturbed natural experience. While remote, the path to the campground is generally considered "easy to get there," ensuring that even those less familiar with off-grid travel can navigate the route. This unique balance of accessibility and remoteness positions Forbes Creek as an ideal destination for Californians seeking an authentic, wild camping adventure without an arduous cross-state journey.

Forbes Creek Campground, while providing a rustic experience, offers several essential services designed to facilitate a comfortable and self-sufficient camping trip. Here's a breakdown of what you can expect:

  • Spacious Campsites: The campground features numerous sites suitable for tents, offering significant distance between individual camping spots (approximately 30 feet from the next person), ensuring privacy and a sense of solitude.
  • Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with picnic tables, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation and dining.
  • BBQ Grills: Campers will find BBQ grills at their sites, allowing for outdoor cooking and enjoyable campfire meals.
  • Bear Lockers: Crucially, bear lockers are provided at campsites. This is an important safety feature for storing food and scented items securely, protecting both campers and local wildlife.
  • Vault Toilets: The campground provides vault toilets. While not flushing, these facilities are maintained and offer a basic but essential amenity for hygiene. Visitors are advised to bring a flashlight for nighttime use.
  • Large Dumpster: A large dumpster is conveniently located near the toilets, making trash disposal easy and encouraging campers to keep the area clean.
  • Proximity to Sugar Pine Reservoir: While not a service of the campground itself, the nearby Sugar Pine Reservoir offers opportunities for water activities, enhancing the overall recreational options for campers.

Forbes Creek Campground boasts several distinct features and highlights that set it apart, particularly for those Californians seeking a more authentic and rugged outdoor experience. These attributes contribute to its unique appeal:

  • Truly Secluded Experience: The paramount feature of Forbes Creek is its unparalleled sense of removal from civilization. With campsites spaced approximately 30 feet apart, visitors can enjoy a remarkable level of privacy and quiet, hearing "nothing except the forest around us" for a truly immersive nature experience.
  • Abundant Amenities at Campsites: Despite its wild nature, individual campsites are well-equipped with clean picnic tables, BBQ grills, and vital bear lockers, providing convenience and safety for campers.
  • Well-Maintained Basic Facilities: The presence of clean vault toilets and a large dumpster demonstrates a commitment to maintaining the cleanliness of the campground, even in a more remote setting.
  • Excellent Mid-June Weather: Reviewers noted "great weather for mid-June," suggesting ideal conditions for camping during this period, offering comfortable temperatures for outdoor activities.
  • No Bear Interactions: Despite the presence of bear lockers and the wild environment, a past visitor reported "no bear interactions," indicating that proper precautions, such as using the provided lockers, are effective.
  • Proximity to Sugar Pine Reservoir: The nearby Sugar Pine Reservoir is a significant highlight, offering opportunities for swimming and water activities. Visitors are advised to bring life jackets and floats due to the water's unique properties (less buoyant than saltwater).
  • Quiet and Respectful Community: Visitors generally describe fellow campers as "nice and not loud or drunk etc.," contributing to a peaceful and respectful environment, which is highly valued in a secluded setting.
  • Off-Grid Disconnection: A key feature is the complete lack of cell phone signal for major carriers (Verizon and T-Mobile). This forces a genuine digital detox, allowing for a complete disconnect and immersion in nature, though visitors are advised to consider a satellite phone for emergencies.
  • Ease of Access: Despite its remote feel, the campground is described as "easy to get there," making it a manageable destination even for those less accustomed to venturing deep into the wilderness.
