Fish Creek Campground

Fish Creek Campground Rd, West Glacier, MT 59936, USA

4.0
We stayed on the B loop and found it was a perfect fit for our Glacier trip. We had easy access to bathrooms, water, flat ground, and appreciated the ranger-led hike and evening programs offered. Cell connection was spotty but definitely possible at times. We used a 2 person tent while many in the loops were in RVs, but overall the immediate area was quiet. People seemed responsible with trash to mitigate bear incursions and the provided food lockers helped as well. - Brady Zbikowski

Among the various camping options within the park, Fish Creek Campground stands out as a popular and well-situated choice for both seasoned and new campers.

Nestled among tall cedars and just a stone's throw from the iconic Lake McDonald, Fish Creek Campground offers a quintessential Glacier National Park experience. It provides a balance of convenience and natural immersion, serving as an excellent base for exploring the park's western side. This article is designed with fellow Montanans in mind, providing a clear, engaging, and factual overview of Fish Creek Campground. We'll explore its prime location, the essential services it provides, its unique features that make it a local favorite, and why it's an ideal choice for your next memorable outdoor adventure in the heart of our beautiful state. Whether you're planning a family trip, a hiking expedition, or a peaceful lakeside retreat, Fish Creek offers a compelling option within the National Park.

Fish Creek Campground is strategically located within Glacier National Park, specifically at Fish Creek Campground Rd, West Glacier, MT 59936, USA. This places it on the western side of the park, approximately 2.5 miles from Apgar Village and very close to the scenic shores of Lake McDonald. Its position provides excellent access to the park's west entrance and the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road, making it incredibly convenient for exploring many of Glacier's popular attractions.

Access to Fish Creek Campground is straightforward via the Camas Road, just off U.S. Highway 2. This well-maintained road ensures easy accessibility for all types of vehicles, including RVs and trailers. While the campground is within the park, its location near West Glacier means that campers are not far from essential services outside the park, such as gas stations, limited grocery options, and dining in Apgar Village or the nearby town of West Glacier. The proximity to Lake McDonald is a significant advantage, allowing for quick walks to the lake for swimming, picnicking, or simply enjoying the stunning views. While some campers with larger RVs have noted that individual site driveways can be narrow and require careful maneuvering, the overall accessibility to and from the park's main roads is a definite plus. This blend of in-park location and reasonable accessibility makes Fish Creek a very practical choice for Montanans looking to maximize their time enjoying Glacier's natural wonders.

Fish Creek Campground is a large National Park Service campground, featuring 178 sites designed to accommodate both tent and RV campers. It offers a range of services aimed at providing a comfortable and well-supported camping experience:

  • Campsites: Individual campsites come equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring with a grate, and a bear-resistant food storage locker. Sites vary in size and layout, with some being more ideal for tents and others for RVs, though no electric hookups are available.
  • Flush Toilets and Sinks: The campground provides modern restroom facilities with flush toilets and running water. These are generally well-maintained, contributing significantly to camper comfort.
  • Showers: A major highlight for many campers is the availability of free showers, located in Loop A. While campers in other loops may need to walk or drive to access them, having this amenity within the campground is a considerable convenience.
  • Potable Water: Drinking water is readily available throughout the campground via water spigots. However, some past campers have noted a high level of manganese in the water, so some individuals might prefer to filter or bring their own.
  • Dump Station: A dump station for RVs is available at the entrance to the campground for wastewater disposal. It's noted that this dump station may not have water for rinsing tanks.
  • Bear-Resistant Food Storage: Given its location in prime bear country, communal bear boxes are often available near restrooms, and individual food lockers are at each site, crucial for safe food storage.
  • Ranger-Led Programs: An amphitheater within the campground hosts seasonal ranger-led hikes and evening programs, offering educational and engaging opportunities to learn more about the park's natural and cultural history.
  • Trash/Recycling Collection: Trash and recycling services are provided seasonally, helping campers manage their waste responsibly.

Fish Creek Campground boasts several features and highlights that make it a particularly appealing choice for Montanans:

  • Proximity to Lake McDonald: Its close proximity to Lake McDonald means easy access to the lake's beautiful shoreline, perfect for swimming, picnicking, or enjoying sunrises and sunsets over the water.
  • Shaded, Forested Sites: The campground is heavily forested with tall cedars, providing ample shade and a more private, traditional camping feel despite its large size. This natural setting enhances the outdoor experience.
  • Family-Friendly Atmosphere: With amenities like flush toilets, showers, and ranger programs, Fish Creek is well-suited for families looking for a comfortable yet authentic national park camping experience. The availability of ranger-led activities adds an educational and entertaining element for all ages.
  • Bear-Aware Environment: The presence of food lockers and a general culture of responsible trash management among campers helps mitigate bear encounters, although campers must always remain vigilant and follow park guidelines for bear safety.
  • Reservable Sites: As one of Glacier's larger campgrounds, a significant portion of its sites are available for advance reservation through Recreation.gov, which can greatly ease trip planning, especially during peak season.
  • Access to Trails: Numerous hiking trails are accessible within a short drive from the campground, offering options ranging from easy walks to more strenuous day hikes.
  • Cell Service: While generally spotty within Glacier National Park, some campers have reported intermittent cell phone reception at Fish Creek, which can be a small but useful convenience for checking weather or communicating.
