Nestled within this expansive natural preserve, near the charming town of Santa Ynez, lies Figueroa Campground. This destination is not just a place to set up camp; it's an invitation to immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of the Santa Ynez Mountains, offering spacious sites, well-maintained facilities, and a true sense of peaceful seclusion that appeals deeply to local outdoor enthusiasts.
Figueroa Campground stands out for its impressive size and the natural beauty that surrounds it. Visitors consistently praise the vastness of the campground, noting how the sites are generously spaced, providing ample room for privacy and relaxation. This is a significant advantage for campers who value a sense of quiet and personal space, a welcome contrast to more crowded recreational areas. The meticulous upkeep of the grounds is another recurring theme in visitor feedback, ensuring a clean and pleasant environment for all.
While the campground embraces a more rustic style of camping, it does so with a commitment to cleanliness and usability. Reviews highlight the commendable condition of the vault (pit) toilets, described as "pretty clean as good as they can be for being outside!" and "well maintained." This attention to fundamental amenities ensures that even in a natural setting, visitors can expect a comfortable experience. Although the desert heat might be a factor for some, and bugs can be present during certain times, the overall consensus points to Figueroa Campground as a "great spot to camp," providing a genuine taste of California's diverse natural landscapes.
Figueroa Campground is located at 9007 Figueroa Mountain Rd, Santa Ynez, CA 93460, USA. This places it within the Santa Lucia Ranger District of the Los Padres National Forest, a vast and diverse region of central California. Its proximity to Santa Ynez makes it a highly accessible mountain retreat for residents throughout Southern and Central California.
To reach the campground, visitors typically travel along Figueroa Mountain Road, which winds up from the Santa Ynez Valley. This road, while generally paved, can be narrow and winding in certain sections, especially as it ascends into the mountains. It's advisable for drivers, particularly those with larger RVs or trailers (RVs up to 25 ft. long can be accommodated; hook-ups are not available), to exercise caution and drive slowly. The journey itself is part of the experience, offering increasingly stunning views of rolling hills, dense chaparral, and eventually, the towering red manzanita, oak, and pine trees that characterize the higher elevations.
Figueroa Campground is approximately an hour's drive from Santa Barbara and within easy reach of the charming towns of Los Olivos, Solvang, and Buellton. These towns serve as excellent last-stop points for supplies, gas, and any last-minute needs before heading up the mountain. While the campground offers a remote feel, its relative proximity to these amenities enhances its appeal for a convenient yet immersive outdoor adventure for Californians.
Figueroa Campground provides essential services that cater to both tent campers and those with smaller RVs, focusing on a more traditional and natural camping experience.
Spacious Campsites: The campground boasts 33 individual campsites. These sites are noted for being "huge" and well-spaced, offering a good degree of privacy between camping groups. Each site typically includes a picnic table, a fire ring, and a pedestal barbecue, allowing for comfortable outdoor cooking and gathering.
Vault Toilets: As highlighted in customer reviews, the campground provides vault (pit) toilets. These facilities are regularly maintained and are praised for their cleanliness, providing a basic but functional restroom option for campers.
Trash Collection: For visitor convenience and to maintain the cleanliness of the forest, dumpsters are located just outside the campground on Figueroa Mountain Road for easy trash disposal.
Firewood for Purchase: A camp host is often on-site and may have firewood available for purchase, a helpful amenity for those who wish to enjoy a campfire but don't want to transport wood from afar.
It is crucial for visitors to note that Figueroa Campground does not offer potable water on-site. Campers must bring all their own drinking, cooking, and hygiene water. There are also no hook-ups for RVs and no cell service at the campground, encouraging a true disconnection from modern conveniences. This primitive nature is part of its charm for many, but preparedness is key.

Access to Hiking and Mountain Biking Trails: The campground is a centralized location for various trailheads, including access to the Davy Brown/Fir Canyon Trail and other routes within the Los Padres National Forest. This provides ample opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and exploring the diverse flora and fauna of the region. Views from higher elevations often include sweeping vistas of the Santa Ynez Valley and even the shimmering Pacific Ocean in the distance.

This tranquility, combined with the lack of cell service, encourages a true disconnect, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the natural sounds and rhythms of the forest.

Birdwatchers will appreciate the numerous spring migrating birds, such as the exquisite western tanager. Figueroa Campground Reviews
This campground was so extremely huge! Every where was nicely cleaned up, the bathrooms were pretty clean as good as they can be for being outside!
Jun 13, 2025 · Cassy ArchibequeGreat spot to camp. Toilets were well maintained. Sites were huge, but parking was pushing it for 2 SUV's. It was pretty windy at night and the bugs in the morning and later evening could be quite annoying.
May 28, 2024 · Garrett LopezSuper friendly campground host, great pit toilets, our first time camping with no tap water, not a problem. The campground was nicely busy but not overcrowded on weekend. It was eerily quiet in weekdays, spooked us a little the first night. High elevation, so the weather varies depending on whether you're in the cloud or not. Great individual sites. 30 minutes drive to nearest town.
Jun 15, 2023 · Roger TWe typically choose dispersed camping but it’s difficult to find nice spots close to LA, especially for tents. This campsite allows you to feel safe around other campers without compromising those wilderness vibes. The views en route are stunning! Just be prepared for the drive up the narrow mountain road (you can park where you camp). We arrived at 2am and were able to set up in a big space with a grill rack and fire ring then pay the $32 nightly fee when the host did their rounds the following day. Downside is there are A LOT of flies so we didn’t hang around as long as we might’ve done otherwise.
May 23, 2023 · HannahPretty cool and woodsy camping site, deer meander here too. It’s about 40 minutes from Solvang. A short drive back out & past the fire station is a great overlook. We could see the cloud cover below obstructing the ocean but we still experienced a lovely sunset there among the old oaks. And two miles up from the campsite is a fire road to the summit. We had a new moon during our stay so it was pitch dark in the evening and we’re able capture the Milky Way off the side of the campsite but you can still experience it from camp if you walk to an area where the trees are a little bit dispersed. The only downside is that there were a ridiculous amount of gnats during the daytime. Other than that, the place is nice & far enough from civilization to enjoy a few days among nature.
